Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Halo 2 keeps freezing up for a few seconds, and when I start a new game or load a new level the FPS drops to like 2 for a few minutes before settling down into just freezing up periodically again. I tried updating my graphics driver but it didn't help.

System:

AMD Athlon 64 (32 bit mode) 2.4 GHz
nVidia GeForce 7600 GS Video 256MB

I saw in Task Manager that "svchost.exe" was taking up 10-20% CPU, so I terminated the process, and Windows said it had encountered an error and had to reboot, so I can't take that route.

Please help! I want to play with you guys but right now the game is unplayable.

svchost.exe is a system process. DO NOT end that.

Why not. I understand its a system process, but sometimes I get 5-6 separate svchost.exe running (Vista Ultimate) and 1-2 of them take up 100% (on both cores) CPU resource. I ended the ones the where taking up all the resource and left the ones that weren't taking any resources and my computer still worked fine, no errors, no need to reboot, everything ran fine.

svchost exes are needed to run Vista properly... do not end them.

I find that odd because they also run in XP but aren't needed, I could easily be wrong as I don't know my way around Vista though. From what I unserstand of svchost it periodically scans for Windows updates among other things, nothing too crucial.

Windows errors related to svchost.exe ?
svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

A 10 second google.

Do you actually understand what you just googled though?

ANYWAYS the reason that a certain svchost takes up 100% CPU and loads more ram IS related to a bug in windows updates, you can turn off automatic updates in administrative tools>services and turning it off.

Yes, but I am currently running 12 svchost.exe's. Although they are not running at 100% atm, and they never do run at 100%, I just get two svchost (sometimes) both run at 50% equaling 100% CPU usage. Surely closing just those two that are using 50% each (close one the other goes up to 95-100% CPU usage) won't do any harm to your OS will it, I've done it plenty of times with no problems.

It's perfectly normal to have more than one instance of the system process svchost.exe.

One of the only things I can think of right now is a corrupt disc, then.

Once installed you never need the disc again, so it's not it.

That's not true. When you begin Gravemind, you will be prompted to insert your Halo 2 DVD into the drive. I dunno why it's only the one level, but... it does.

I beat gravemind without ever needing the disc. ;) Don't blame me for your screwed up instillations.

It's random, usually a computer restart does the trick.

Try a hard drive defrag?

Slaying noobs since 2007.

Node, what aspect ratio do you have it set to? And, try pausing it for about 5 minutes after you start. Then unpause and see if there is a difference.

No, I played the level fine, I just had to put my disc in the drive to start the level. Everything after that went fine.

I think it's set at 4:3, or whatever the default is. I tried what you were suggesting but left it paused for a few hours while I was out. No improvement.

I think I found the problem though. In task manager, there is an instance of svchost.exe taking up 10-20% CPU time. I set it to low priority but it still took up almost a quarter of the CPU. Anyone know how I can stop this? If I can I bet H2V will run fine...
