PMing ninjas works fine. Use this to find out which ninja to PM.
Although a message pool may work better. Meh.

Subject: Report button

Why isn't there one? Most forums have a button to report threads to moderators, and I know from personal experience it helps moderating a lot. Just have it send a message to a moderator group, or something all the moderators can check, with a link to the thread in it. It wouldn't be too difficult to impliment and I bet it would save the ninja's a lot of time sorting through the crap. There's bound to be someone reporting even the tiniest infraction, and the ninja's can choose to act or not when they get there. Good idea?

I assume this is the right forum, since I can't find a better place for it...

That's a good idea, but one that could be abused very easily...

No differently then Msg a mod can be. Each report would have to be reviewed and investigated as would happen now anyway. In truth there is no need at for it the current system works fine.

A report button is much better, because it e-mails the moderator at their main e-mail address as well as PM's them. It would be alot better than pming, which just gets lost among the hundreds. Anything that is member run can be abused, so the first thing we must do is trust the community not to before we decide wether or not they will.

It's that trust word in your theory there. I suspect that's the wheel that will puncture.

I think you mean 'that someone will stick a Plasma Grenade to in order to see how many times it will roll'

Don't send me group invites.

IMO, PMing mods works better than a report button would. A report button takes no effort to use, just a simple click and *bam* a message is sent. There are many reasons, which don't need explaining, on how this can be abused. PMing on the other hand takes a little, minimal at best, effort to use. This means that to actually spam a moderator one would need to go through the trouble of looking up said mod and writing a message then sending it. While on the other hand if the thread really does need to be reported, it's just a few simple clicks away and it's done.

It's a matter of perspective.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

A "report" button as used in the traditional sense would not work here. These forums are a little bit different from most in that it has half a million active accounts, with explosions of new threads all the time and dozens of posts-per-minute. A "report" feature that sends a PM or an email is out of the question. As has already been mentioned, the current system works fine and the truly bad threads rarely stick around for more than a few minutes. It is true, however, that some threads that violate the rules but are not egregious or truly horrible do tend to last a long time. For this reason, I agree that some way of alerting moderators to bad threads besides PMs, especially in the Halo 3 forum, would be a good idea.

One potential way of solving this problem would be a flagging feature (that would have to be well-thought-out in advance) that does not send emails but rather uses the web interface and a second-tier of membership ("Senior" or "Veteran" Members) to notify moderators of problem threads. This is just one of many very good ideas that lots of people have had to make moderating easier and encourage good posts.

But I do not think that a "report" button of the sort that you suggest is a good idea.

First off, moderators arn't teachers, and second... I'd much rather see the crap off the forums than let it continue because a mod hadn't noticed it yet. It's not like it actually contributes to anything. Hence the reason why it needs a mod's attention.

The flagging idea sounds good, perhaps it could be given to everyone, but taken away from that person if abused. Sorta like a pre-warning.

Exactly what I do, works well, and is much harder to abuse, because it takes real effort to do.
