Two XBOXs and an ethernet cable linking both.

If however you want more than two XBOXs, you could use a router.

The router would be the splitter. If you want more than two systems connected, you have to have more ethernet ports, ala a 4-port router.

RIP Halo 2.

If you want to directly connect two systems, you're going to need a crossover cable. I believe Cat5, Cat5e, and Cat6 crossover cables will do the job. Alternatively, you can connect two or more devices to a hub using normal patch cable. I keep an 8 port 10Base-T hub and several cables and couplers handy just for LANs. Works very nicely.

Direct ethernet connection. No other hardware.

Gotta have a crossover cable though, I believe standard ethernet patch cable won't work.

do u system link much and what kind of xbox do u have

  • 07.23.2007 12:00 AM PDT

RIP Halo 2.

I use a 360 and I System Link using a hub and standard patch cables. Only because I usually have more than two Xbox consoles connected. Otherwise I can just use the crossover cables I have. Ethernet cable is less that 10 cents a foot in the spools, so if you have the know how and tools to make your own cable, you can just make whatever length and type you need when you need it.

Hi All,

I'm just going to ask my question here, and also clarify the answers that have gone before,

Basically Sam, if you just have 2 Xboxes, and you connect them back-to-back, ie with no hub inbetween them, you need ONE CROSSOVER cable. These are usually sold as "Xbox link cables"

Alternatively, if you put a hub or switch or "router" in between the boxes, you can use ONE STRAIGHT-THROUGH patch cable connecting each box to a hub port. ie. if you have 2 boxes, you need 2 straight throughs, if you have 4 boxes, you need 4 straight throughs. Commonly these are just called "ethernet" or "patch cables".

The use of the right cable is pretty important. If you get it wrong, it might not work (I say might not, cos some switches are clever enough to convert the signal if you use the wrong type of cable).

I hope this helps.

Anyways. I need help too:

I'm planning a Halo 2 Lan, but I'm sure I read a long time ago that Halo 2 would have issues in LAN's if the box hasn't EVER had a LIVE account used on it. (Some kind of update from LIVE is needed to make Halo 2 work over a LAN???)

Can anyone comment on whether this is going to be the case? Cheers.

There's only one issue which I can think of which matches the problem you've heard of, and that is the first major patch to the game (the 1.1 patch) which actually modified some gameplay attributes. It came along very early 2005 I think. Obviously, only those people with LIVE access could download it. I would think that you can't play a LAN game between xboxes with different versions of the game on (pre- and post-patch). If all your xboxes don't have the patch, it should be ok, and if they all do have it, again there won't be a problem. If they have different versions, you'll either have to DL the patches to the ones that aren't current using someone else's account on a memory card or something, OR delete the updates from the boxes that do have it (I think you can do this but I'm not sure.)

The 1.1 patch increased melee and grenade damage greatly, reduced the spread of the BR, and nerfed the Magnum. Good post, by the way.

we play via hub almost every saturday with 4 xboxes and 2 of them had never been online...the update with the last map pack on disc seemed fine...no newer stages than that though...but no problems.

Thanks guys.

I thought there was some issue or other with Halo2, so thanks for that.
Since I'm no longer subscribed to Live, I'll have to either try and find a way to revert all boxes to pre-patch, or synchronize them with a friend's account.

This Map Expansion pack (DISK).... how does it work. Does it copy to the memory on the box, and then you run the Original Halo 2 disk? Or does the game actually run from the expansion disk?

What I mean is if i have 4 boxes, is it necessary to buy 4 copies of the expansion disk.
I'm hoping if I got one copy, I could install the maps/update on all boxes with the one disk, and then run Original Halo 2.

Nah, you can use one Map Pack disc on as many xboxes as you like. It installs everything on the hard drive. Much quicker than downloading too.

Fantastic Mate!

Thanks for all the help.

P.s. sorry Sam, I think I've hijacked your post a little bit. With any luck you'll find Rhythm's advice useful too, so maybe you'll forgive me!

Didnt the patch also take out what was the rocket cancel? I remember playing on my friends xbox which has never been on line, and being able to fly across the map using the rockets and sword (some weird combo, i really cant remember, like x, y, and r-trigger) I also would like to ask a question, is it possible to still do this "manuever" in the 1.5 (or whatever we are up to now) patch. Ive tried a few times in customs, and have not been sucessful. Is it just harder to do?

thanks in advance

RIP Halo 2.

I've seen people on 1.0 LAN with 1.1 before The way it works is that whoever's hosting determines what version of the game is being played. So if a 1.1 player hosts, then any connected 1.0 players will also feel the effects of the 1.1 update (melee damage, grenade damage, nerfed Magnum, etc). I haven't personally tested this with 1.5, but I assume it works the same way.

Just a common crossover/ethernet cable will work, but you need a router with several ports in order to connect three or more systems.
