I had a broken headset and cracked open the dongle on the end there. There's 4 wires coming from the actual headset and soldered onto the PCB of the dongle. I desoldered them and had a clean dongle separate from the headset. After that, I cut the 3.5mm cord off an old crappy pair of headphones my mom was going to throw out, stripped the wire and then stripped the left channel and ground wire inside it. From there, I soldered onto the microphone positive and the speaker ground because I had already connected the speaker ground and microphone ground from a previous project.
You only get the left channel of the music, but most songs are pretty similar for the right and left channels (seeing how you can share an earbud with a friend). I suppose I could always solder the right channel onto the microphone positive as well or just convert some tracks to mono.
I did this just to see if it'd work. It was extremely simple; I did it while I was waiting for the water to boil for my Ramen..
