In the recent threads about music, I've noticed alot of people saying how great rappers like Eminem are. And others talk about how much they hate all rap. I have this to say to both side: You're listening to the wrong kind of rap.
Mainstream rap, ie. the stuff you see on MTV, Is unintelligent, unorigional, and corrupt. This applys to almost every succesful rap act out there. The 'gangster rap' mentality has completely taken over the airwaves, and unfortunately, is the only kind of rap that most people get exposed to. The point of this thread is to help people who are interested in rap, especially those who are tired of the stupidity all over the radio, to find out about good, intelligent hip hop. The 'Rap is Crap' crowd is not invited to this discussion.
Anyways, I'll share some of my favorite underground artists with you guys, and hopefully you'll check them out.

Sag Francis: My favorite rapper. His lyrics are the absolute best. I'm convinced that he's a poet without equal. Very politically minded, and it shows in his songs. He also has a group consisting of him and DJ Joey Beats. He does alot of collaberation with Slug and artists from the Anticon lable. Recently signed to the huge punk lable Epitaph. Recommended songs: Crack Pipes, Makeshift Patriot, Hopeless (spoken word), and Embarrased.

Atmosphere: A rap group that's on the verge of making it big. Consists of MC Slug, producer ANT, and DJ Mr. Dibbs. Slug is one of my absolute favorite rappers. He's intelligent, funny and talented. Recommended songs: Flesh, F--- you Lucy, God Loves Ugly.

Brother Ali: A 250 lb, albino black Muslim. His lyrics are incredible, intelligent and unique. One of my favorites. Recommended songs: Picket Fences, Win Some, Lose Some.

Alias: More of an artsy rapper. He produces his own beats, and has done beats for alot of other artists. His songs tend to be very emotional and introspective. Often classified as 'Emo-rap' whenever the 'Emo-rap' movement is covered in the media. I myself don't like that term very much, but whatever. Recommended songs: Watching Water, Opus Ashamed.

Eyedea: Member of Eyedea & Abilities, but I like his solo work better. He has a unique voice and style, and his CD "The Many Adventures Of Oliver Hart" is truely incredible to listen to all the way through. Recommended songs: Weirdside, Forget Me.

Aesop Rock: Another one of my absolute favorites. His style and voice is like nothing you've ever heard. His lyrics are great. Not much else to say, except that he's incredible at what he does. Recommended songs: Daylight, 9-5ers Anthem.

Themselves: Probably the weirdest rap you'll ever listen to. Consists of rapper Dose One, and producer Jel. They're on Anticon, which is know for arsty, expiramental rap. I love Dose One's voice, and Jel makes some of the best and most origional beats I've ever heard. Their stuff will be harer to find, but look around on kazaa or soulseek for a taste. Recommended song: Good People Check.

Deep Puddle Dynamics: Group consisting of Slug, Alias, Sole, Dose One, and Jel on the beats. You'l probably only be able to find anything by them on soulseek, and will only be able to order their CD from the Anticon store, but trust me, It's completely worth the effort. This album is one of my favorites. The rappers all go together very well, and Jels beats are great as usual. Probably my favorite group of rappers. Recommended songs: The Scarecrow Speaks, I Am Hip Hop.

Now, I'm not recommending you go pirate all of their CDs, but all of these artists encourage listeners to download their stuff. The internet really is the only way for this kind of music to get out. So download some songs, and if you like it, buy their stuff. That's the way I do it, and it's the way everyone should.
I hope you all take thios seriously, since it was a pain to type, and I really hope you chekc out some of this music and like it. Gangster rap can't (hopefully) last forever. This stuff really is the next step. Some of these artists will be the next big thing, and are already getting some radio play, and on station like MTV2.
So, thanks for reading.

Ok, first I'd like to start by saying that every single one of those "artists" sucks ass. Second, underground music is only underground untill they get discovered. Then they are mainstream and idiots like you say they suck. If you would spend more time listening to the music as opposed to not liking rappers because they are on Mtv, you'd be better off.

This was a really stupid response, because you don't know me, and your making judgements. I don't not like the rappers that are on MTV because they are on MTV, I don't like them because they are unintelligent and untalented. I don't care how much success a good artist has, I simply care about how the music sounds. I won't stop listening to someone because they 'sell-out'', unless their music changes to the typical mainstream crap. Stop jumping to conclusions.
