While I was playing some custom maps I get an invite from a guy I recently added to my friends list. Seems like a nice enough guy, younger than I am but normally level headed. Anyway, I pop in on his invite and he tells me that he wants to practice standbying. i asked him why he would want to do that and he (of course) replies, "So I can party up and own people. I want to level up faster".
I tell him that it's a bad idea and that he could get banned. He says that because it takes so many complaints and a person almost never gets caught with the banhammer, it makes the possible rewards outweigh the risks.
I've alread ysent a message to the ninjas asking their recommendations. They said that there is little Bungie can do with someone who is "planning" on doing something wrong until they actually commit the act. They reiterated that the Banhammer is set-up to detect standbying but that the system is not perfect. they recommended that if I am aware of a specific game that the player has used standbying in I should send the gamelink to an email link they provided and they would look into it.
Problem with that is I don't ever plan on playing with this guy again so I will probably never be privy to whatever games he actually uses the tactic in.
I posted beause I wanted to know what the other players think. While I don't want to snitch out somebody for minor offenses, I consider standbying the worst form of cheating and would not feel bad dropping a dime on somebody who would do it.
Oh yeah, if I can't convince him otherwise I'm going to post his gamertag on the forums.
