I've been noticing lately that Halo 2 has been getting boiled down to the best players among other things. I remember when Halo 2 first came out there were people that didn't even know the maps everywhere. You couldn't join a custom game without a few noobs being in it. Entering unranked matches was like shooting fish in a barrel for the most part.

Now the noobs have either gotten good, or quit playing. Sure, you'll run into a guy with a few guests on his acocunt that might not know what they're doing. But it's getting down to the more hardcore fans out there. Everyone knows the secrets, and know how to play well. The same thing happened to CS 1.6 when CSS came out, and most of the players got phased out. I dunno if I like it. But I just thought I would share my opinion with you guys. Don't flame. I just wanted to see if you guys have noticed this.

No, it's true.

  • 07.25.2007 11:42 PM PDT

Yeah its true, but I kind of wish that it wasn't. Simply because with less and less people playing the playlists are going to continue to get smaller and smaller. That means less variety. The same games over and over just get boring after a while.

Yeah. Like you said. There are alot less people playing. Every time I play H2 Challenge, every single game I play the same 7 other people are there. You play the same people over and over. It's like a custom game that's ranked. It's cool but sucks at the same time.

No there's still a fine line between the noobs and the "experts". There's tons of noobs that are below level 20 now, a whole bunch that play btb, and most of them are against button glitching.

i totally agree with what u just said. i feel like im playing really bad and getting owned every single game and going down levels. but there arent that many people my level playing. they are all just really good people better than me and above me level range. so now you mention it. i dont feel so bad.

Yeah, it's a whole lot harder to move up levels then when the game was first introduced. A level 30 is a hell of alot more special now then back in the day.

Well not trying to sound like a jerk but I had to take a year and a half off from Halo 2 b/c of the navy but since my return I have found that the game is a lot more competitive. I have improved my game to fit theses guys and I feel that I am just as good as your level 22-29. I like it a lot better now b/c you have to actually try to win. It isn't like you go in to TS and you automatically win. I enjoy the challenge. Well that is my peace spoken.

Please no group invites... I only play MLG customs and don't spend my time wasting it on groups, clans or any other internet social crap.

I would have to agree 100%, but I think it's the factor that so many "not so experinced" and "non-hardcore Halo fan" have gotten sick of all the button glitches and standbyers. Having many of the better players online, that's why it's harder to level up life crazy. I recall getting to 30 - 35 in all gametypes before the reset, but the average across the board is probable 2-6 level lower depending on the gametype.
*not complaining, enjoy more games that play competitive and not so unbalanced*

Many of the people that play competitive will keep playing and attempt to master the button glitches to stay on top and will also keep playing if they get standbyed.

BUT

As for the gamers playing simply for fun, standbyers and button glitches have caused many of them to change games and even back to PC gamming. I know many players around here from a local game station HATE Halo 2 online. We'll play it like crazy on the LANs but when it comes to LIVE, many of them are waiting for Halo 3. Top reasons: (double shooting, super bouncing, stanbyers, and the fact EVERYONE says ""I'M SEMI-PRO"" and obviously are far from it.)

Inside the Mind of Halotitan Help me get expand my mind.

I don't know, I had gotten really busy at the end of May and haven't played Halo since. But when I finally decided to start playing again (two weeks ago) my Xbox got the red rings of death. I can imagine how Halo 2 has gotten, especially with so many people just eagerly waiting the arrival of Halo 3 and completely ignoring Halo 2.

I don't understand how you guys can say Glitching (Button, Wall, and superbouncing) makes you a "Pro" or even "Semi-Pro". If anything people who do that stuff are garbage because they can legitimately win games. It's ok to be competitive and try to beat the other to, but when you resort to glitching to do it, that just shows your lack of skill and is just people failing at life once again... :P

I've been playing H2 since it released. I'm a HUGE fan of the game, but online has definitely become less fun for me. I don't have the time or the inclination to learn all of the glitches, so obviously I'm getting owned more than owning. It's just become a real frustration to play now. Sad, because I used to have a lot of fun. I don't have to win every time to have fun, but to constantly play at a disadvantage for not knowing how to cheat, or wanting to cheat, is a downer. And of course, there is the massive amount of idiots (racists, annoying kids, etc.) that keep me away too.

I can't wait for Halo 3, but it's only a matter of time before the same thing happens. I'll have to try to get more custom games going with friends more often.

Being a new player myself, I can honestly say that the biggest leg up is the rampant availability of tutorials, strategy, map guides, videos, etc. You name it, I can find it online in a few minutes. That much material for research takes out a huge chunk of the learning curve.

I definitely think that the biggest improvement they could make to the ranking system is to make it dependent on the individual player's performance and not just the win or loss. I know of several people who are far better than the majority of people they play with but find leveling up hard to do. I also know that I have received an artificial level in Team Snipers primarily because the guys on my friends list taht I play with are extremely good with Sniping. I'm a level 9 and I may actually be a level 4 or so in skill level. I SUCK with a sniper rifle.

If the beta is any indicator I'm sure we'll be far happier with the ranking system in H3.

you can't judge the individual in a "team" game because it's based on how you do as a team. I've played games of oddball and KOTH, where players would just sit there and kill people in the hill and racked up 45 kills and 3 deaths, but we lost the game because people weren't completingthe objective of capturing the hill. The ranking on Runmble Pit was for that purpose, but Bungie decided to take that off of Ranking. I think the new Ranking system was very good in the Beta because it listed multiple ranks for each player, one for RP which showed how much the person played, and a level which showed how much they've won, a fine balance.

did i play you and your clan/team in matchmaking yesterday. i am just making a wild guess i have no clue if you were one of them or not. but i was playing a team of ppl with that emblem and the name sounds familiar, anyway it was lockout team slayer, yall or whoever it was was doing good at first but then fell apart we won 50-17. anyway yeah as i said in my previous post i think i gave good statistics for the current halo 2 population.

Most of the people who still really play Halo 2 exclusively are serious about it, and are higher in skill.

I just like to play for fun with the players of my skill level. I have noticed that the majority of the people playing are very competitive or are just mean.

  • 07.26.2007 3:32 PM PDT

Eat it

I think the AVERAGE player has been phased out. That is, a player who goes into matchmaking, by himself, and does decently. It seems like every time (eh, more like every-other time) I go into matchmaking, I get matched up with horrible, and I mean 2/14 horrible, kids. The other team woops our asses because they play together all the time, and my teammates have no clue how to work together. Eh, maybe I just need to find a decent clan.... Any takers?

this is an issue that needs to be addressed - for sake of bungie aka Microsoft's back pocket.

I have several friends who have tried xbox live once and got so totally smashed it turned them off.

These people are not running out to buy an xbox live sub or H3.

I see two possible solutions:

1. Trial accounts cannot play in ranked games - these means there would not be as many competent people in the lower levels. This needs to be coupled with some tweaks in the ranking math. I have some ideas that are still 0 sum but allow rapid acceleration of competent players - and yes even in team games.

2. Have a 'play pen' for the new people where people with any sort of rank over a certain limit cannot enter. You could have a couple - under 5, under 10, under 20.

I also think that the H3 ability to prefer people with good connections will help a lot.

I'm from Australia, and we have about a 300ms ping to the US. So often it just depends on which content the game is hosted. We can play the same game with the same opposing team twice in a row, get flogged in one game and flog them in the other - just depends who get stuck with the latency. People no of the US have no idea what their true rank is for this reason.
