The End

‘The conscious is cancerous if allowed to linger’

"Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there."

Okay, here is my idea. When people sign up their username there should be a message "Choose your username. Think carefully you will not get an opportunity to change it." That would stop people requesting to change usernames because it told them straight out they would not be able to change it so there would be no more requesting, questioning threads [ Or at least less >:-( ]!

I also think there should be a sticky in this community forum that states you cannot change your username just to be safe.

Please comment.

They could have a window that comes up after hitting Submit that states: "Are you sure you want this username? You can never change it, ya know!"
I totally agree with you. People don't always read what is right in front of them unless it becomes obvious. Great idea.

I agree that a warning would work quite nicely. It would help, particularly when somebody misspells his/her user name. It would suck to have your mistyped name locked to your Live ID forever.
If the message coes up people might think twice and check the name they have chosen! Good point.

-Quaere verum.

Chairleg Productions presents: 'Console Wars' and 'Games as Art?' (also on Halo Waypoint).

It has been so long since i created an account that i'm not sure about the existence of warnings about not being able to change your user name once the account is created. However, as you suggest, it would be very wise to have such a warning if one of this sort does not exist already.

I am afraid, however, i do not agree that there should be a sticky about this. Perhaps, if anything, it should be added to a pre-existing sticky. What we must all remember is that there aren't many who actually seem to ready stickies. Not even those with subject lines consisting purely of capital letters and multiple exclamation marks.

Strange evolution how people have come to believe
That we are it's greatest achievement
We're barely, we're just a collection of cells
Overrating themselves

The number of username change requests is so minimal, it doesnt really require any more attention. The posts that do pop up are quickly answered by someone in the Community directing them to the appropriate person.

What we need are more people being part of the community instead of people constantly looking for flaws and trying to "fix" the community.

There is more of a majority of these threads than you think. Changing a few lines of code here and there doesn't take much effort for bungies highlt qualified webteam so if it will help reduce annoyances such as this then why not do it?

Also in reply to Gods Prophet I think I agree with what you said about stickies not helping because on reflection I hardly ever read stickies myself. It could help but it can also clutter so your reasoning is taken into account.

You're still operating under the assumption that people read everything before they sign up for an account.

The thing is, in the time its taken to discuss this "issue", there have already been 3 or 4 people (which is abnormally high) who have asked about changing thier username, and have had that question answered.

I'm sticking to my opinion that this isn't an issue that needs any time devoted to it.

Why don't you just give me ONE SECOND!

They'd beg and plead for the rule to be bent just once for them.

They already do. ;)

I suppose a 'warning' would help a little bit, but most people make a name and still wouldn't think about changing it until much later. No name changes. You're the user you are when you sign up, and it's your identity. People should just stick with one name. ;)

I totally agree with you. That would even better potray a message.

  • 07.28.2007 12:52 AM PDT

...why not just allow it to be changed every other month? Although, if that isn't possible, a warning could work.

I hate change. On XBL when somebody changes their gamertag it annnoys me. They are on my friends list and it is like "Who are you?" Why change it.

I know what people mean, I would like mine to get changed to my gamertag (Cas7er) <Wink, wink web-team, Luke, Tom>. However, I am also not willing to make a new one because there is nothing broken with this one, per se. A warning would be nice, but at the same time, you should be giving yourself a name that you might regret in future...

@ High Truth: Although, why would you change your name to your Gamertag when you can simply link the two. I am with the idea of having a warning message appear during name selection, although having made my account a while ago I can no longer remember if there was one when I did so.

Name changing is confusing at the best of times, and I think should only be allowed on forums with a small number of members, where people can normally recognise each other by the way that they act, although I have seen it implemented on larger forums, with some sucess. Bungie.net, however, is huge, and it would be supremely confusing for other members, if people could change their names.
I don't even know if a warning would limit the number of threads about name changes though, because, as God's Prophet said, the number of people I've seen who ignore the warnings stickied by Achronos and the Ninjas is quite large. Therefore it can be assumed that the name change warning would also be ignored.

After entering your info, the site will ask you to make sure that everything is spelled correctly and is the correct info.
I think that would help, then you would have a chance to change a misspelling, or you can change your mind.

They are linked. The reason is simply ascetic, the display name is not what I would like it to be. However, there's nothing wrong with it other than that minor annoyance. If it was changed, super-sweet. If not, eh that's fine too.

I tend to agree. However some people would still request username change. I just want problems to be reduced and this is an easy way to do so which doesn't require much maintenence!

Fight hard, break bones >{o

they can be changed through a deletion of your profile.

but i think if you wanted to sticky it put it into an existing sticky. idk if its since the new site or since the hijacking, but there doesnt seem to be any info at all. i couldnt even find the 'report site bugs' thread (if you know where that is let me know please). i think there needs to be a better Q&A section thats easier to find. (what happened to all the halo 2 stuff? they only ever got to Lockout then they never did anything... its not like it was hard or even time consuming work that needed to be done..)
