It's use as slang is inappropriate. You sir are part of the problem. Would you say " Get r a p e d" it in front of your parents or at school? No? Then you shouldn't say it to total strangers online!
But would you with your friends? Yes. They don't care.

Its Not A Big Deal To Say It. Its Just Slang And Another Way Of Saying 'owned'.
Who Cares?
I Dont See How Anyone Could Be Offended By It.

I don't use the word myself, but to come on here and post a thread about this and then claim that anyone who thinks otherwise is part of the so called "problem", is just plain arrogant.

It's perspective. Someone who hasn't known someone close who has suffered from it does not have a frame of reference so they don't have a reason to be offended by a word.

Those that do unfortunately have a frame of reference are heavily affected by the term and respond with their own measure of emotional reaction to those who use it so flipantly.

It's not arrogance, it's just perspective.

Once again, mute to the rescue. Isn't there a way to block players from being matched with you?

OK, C Moth i see what you mean, but if your playing halo 2 on xbox live and you let that offend you (no matter what you have gone through) you just need stop playing live. Just because somebody halfway across the country says something you don't like is no reason to get offended.

all in all, most people who play halo 2 on live seem very VERY immature, so don't put to much weight on what they say. I'll say it again, I don't use the word

By the way, I just want to throw it out there that this is a rated M game. Of course your going to hear language and things you consider "inappropriate", especially with Xbox Live added on top of that M rating.
if u cant handle language than u can just lick my rusty cheerio

because they are stupid, and stupid people say stupid things. =P
just ignore them, and thankfully in halo 3, there will be the "A-HOLE" button that can let you mute these people.

Carrots.

While yes, it is an insult, it shouldn't be thaught of as bad in the Xbox Live community, as it is just an internet taunt, and it does no damage. The context in which it is used is not one to denote the actual illegal act of forced sex, but rather to denote a rather satisfying kill, or other things in different contexts.

Bungie uses a word filter to prevent you from saying bad words, and getting past it is breaking the rules (by putting spaces in the letters and such) so I advise you edit your post before a moderator finds it.
Also, it is censored on bungie.net, but bungie has nothing to do with what goes on in Xbox Live, so you shouldn't use it as an example.

RIP Halo 2.

It's pretty common amongst all online games, so it's not going away any time soon. You just have to get used to it.

I don't know how you could be offended by a single word if it's not actually calling out anyone. (And I understand where C Moth is coming from. It's very well put.) The topic starter was going about it the wrong way, obviously, by calling people worthless if they use "r--e" as a way to have friendly (However unfriendly the word is, it has become mainstream slang.) trash talk is probably the worst thing you could do to ruin your reputation on any forum.

By the way, I have a GPA that exceeds a 4.0, I'm taking 3 AP classes this year, I plan on attending the University of Advancing Technologies for Game Design, get a Bachelor, and raise a family a few years after I graduate from college. My mom is an RN, my dad's a pharmacist, and they're both very knowledgeable. I'm very fortunate that they were the main influence in my upbringing, thank you very much. See? A word doesn't make a personality.

what i do get annyed with is the term Niiga, i cop that nearly every games, i have sort of came to terms with it n are startin to get over it but it still annoys me when all i get in a match is Niiga this Niiga that, every second word Niiga....

YOU are all part of the problem. I am not taking this personally. The use of a word that offends someone or could offend them is wrong. Just because you have no morals or your parents are worthless individuals does not make it right.

Two wrongs do not make a right good sir.

Here are the formal definitions of the word in question:

–noun
1. the unlawful compelling of a woman through physical force or duress to have -blam!- intercourse.
2. any act of -blam!- intercourse that is forced upon a person.
3. statutory -blam-.
4. an act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse; despoliation; violation: the -blam- of the countryside.
5. Archaic. the act of seizing and carrying off by force.
–verb (used with object)
6. to force to have -blam!- intercourse.
7. to plunder (a place); despoil.
8. to seize, take, or carry off by force.
9. (slang) to dominate in a contest.
–verb (used without object)
10. to commit -blam-.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.^
I agree with the thread creator and I hate how so many people justify using offensive words with stupid logic; such as "it's just a word" or "I meant it playfully". If it is just a word, to those of you who say that, then why do you insist of saying it so often? Own is just a word, so why not fixate on it? Oh yeah, that's right. You don't get some immature thrill out of saying words that aren't offensive. Anyway, you people act like we are the ones who should get over it, when you are the ones who could just stop saying it.

  • 07.28.2007 12:55 AM PDT

it depends on how a word is used, by whom, and in what context. words have adding meanings in the American dialect, when people are saying get r-a-p-e-d or a variation of the saying they are basically saying get dominated, you got destroyed.

You insult people because of there age but these kids are more mature then you in this instance for they can see the difference in meanings of words.

And the more the stupid people use words like r4p3, the more everyone else will say it. People are just like that. They pick up on things they hear and hell, theres little kids playing this game. I dont know about you guys, but when I hear some 12 yr old boy say that he's going to r4p3 me, I get really worried about our future.

Even PMS doesnt allow the members to say that word in MM or at all for that matter.

You are correct, at least in spirit. Freedom of speech is a Constitutionally guaranteed right as listed in the 1st amendment of the Bill of Rights. But, these aren't rights that are granted to us by the Government. They are a list of identified rights that are inalienable and endowed to us by our Creator. They are meant to be something that the Government can't take away from us. Unfortunately we've allowed them to curtail certain of our guaranteed freedoms due to ignorance.

However, these inalienable rights grant us the ability to perform them NOT escape the consequences if our actions cause someone harm.

I won't slam you on your grammar and spelling considering you at least gave some thought to your response. Our educational system is partly to blame for the current decline in "Johnny's ability to read". You've been able to gain some intellect despite our systems best efforts to keep you pig-ignorant.

But, don't get your education from a billboard slogan at a pep-rally, read a little bit more and truly understand them.

Example: You walk up to a woman in public and say, "You are a skanky whore". The woman, being offended, sues your ass for libel. You make the argument in civil court and claim your right to free speech. The court ways your right to say it against the woman's right not to be unduely slandered and have her reputation damaged. You will lose and she will own you.

The court will recognize your right to say it but penalize your abuse of your right by harming someone with it. Your constitutional right ends when it interferes with someone elses. In the above case, her right to go about her life with liberty from being harmed by a callous dip$#it.

Class dismissed.

Someone suggested using noob or other alternative words instead of r a p e, but I've heard noob (and other words) used in a context that was WAY more rude and/or offensive. What's being said and how it's being said is sometimes more important than the words themselves. The post about the player with the autistic child is a perfect example. One of the unfortunate side-effects of the anonymity that the internet provides is that people will say things that they wouldn't say in person. On the other hand, getting upset about it only ruins YOUR day, not theirs. There's another word that I've heard thrown around on HALO that starts with an N; it also doesn't belong in game playing, but there it is, I hear it hear 10 times more online than I hear it in real life. But neither Bungie nor Microsoft have the ability to Police the entire online gaming community.

As far as being upset about this particular word, I never really thought about it bothering anyone, which means a lot of people probably never think about it bothering anyone, which means it's not going to stop any time soon. Reading the posts and thinking about it, I could see where a real victim of r a p e may have issues with hearing it all the time; but the people saying it while playing are just conveying the fact that they just decimated and destroyed their opponents. It's not like they're sitting there contemplating how they're going to ruin a prior victim's day.

"because spartans cant wort wort wort anything"

Made me laugh so hard.

In my humble opinion, people should be nice to one another. I once again call for this to be the rule rather than exception over H2 Live. Set an example. Its just a video game and yes it is exciting and competative, but would you really want to cause another human emotional damage? If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. This responsibility lies with you the player, all 40,000 of you that are on each night.

FYI if my child was to say that they raped someone in any way, shape or form, they'd feel tha back of me hand.
