I think you're talking about what was called a tunnel. What I heard about a while back let some Xboxes communicate with each other by routing thier data between each other without modifications to it, so that they "think" they're connected directly with cables. The data to and from the Xboxes was bundled with data telling all the non-Xbox machines involved what to do with the incomprehensible "boxspeak", with the last of the routing stuff stripped away as your PC feeds it to your Xbox. I imagine that lag was a big issue since whatever the games needed to share was sent over the internet with routing data and processed through multiple other machines, especially since most games' authors probably expected the data to be sent by itself between only two machines and through nothing but your link cable! It's still being used, though, so it can't be too bad...
