~~Pardon Our Dust.~~

Now, normally I wouldn't bring up this topic because it easily is mis-interpretted as some sort of *wink wink*, but I'm not really afraid of what you guys think of this.

Do we possibly need more Forum Ninja? As usual, the Halo 3 forum is a mess. The only difference is that I just went in there and read about 10 posts by the same user, all about various cereal mascots and their tendency to like children. Fantastic. Then I read some threads containing pretty spam-filled posts and pretty offensive stuff. There are 0 moderators on MSN right now, and there's really no way to fix this until one shows up, or one of the web team gets a look over there. Normally I really don't think the Halo 3 Forum is as bad as many of you profess, but right now it's looking pretty bad. That could easily discourage users from posting, and it's causing people to start MORE threads about "Why isn't <this> guy banned yet?"

I thought we had enough moderators (23 or so, isn't it?) but it seems like we just never have them on at certain times of day.
What does everyone else think? I feel like this thread is already setting up for some sort of disaster, but let's keep it off the topic of "The Halo 3 Forum sucks", if we could.. :P

Edit: See, by the time I post this now the threads are getting locked and the forums being moderated. I guess that disproves this. ;) I was skeptical to begin with.

Your 100% right i mean i dont come on any fo these forums much, and when i do its to check the updates and to see a couple of opinions on things, and i usally stray over to the Halo 3 forum, and I think your right, i dont know much about how mods are chosen but instead of replacing them i think they should just add more and more, wouldnt that make sense? but not have too many cause then everyone would be mods lol

I was just thinking this same exact thing. I was about to create a new thread, when the "Thank you, Achronos!" thread kinda struck a chord in my heart (I'm weak, what can I say!).

I do think that the moderators are getting a bit in over their head now (either that, or the water level is just starting to rise). I acknowledge that they are only volunteering their time, but the availability of these guys seems to be faultering at certain times during the day. Perhaps it is time to appoint some new Ninjas, or possibly deputize some members.

That is a good solutin give them limited power, just for cases like this evening where things are, well getting out of hand.

Frankly, if a moderator can spend the time finding people suitable enough to "deputize", then he could probably do the work himself. A better option would be to give a handful of responsible members limited power (pretty much the ability to lock, and use the new warning system if possible) over the Halo 3 forum, as that seems to be the worst area.

These people aren't being paid to do this. They have jobs, school, families, and personal responsibilities outside of policing web-mongers.

Good point. Still, there's only about 3 pretty inactive one's, but they still pop in occasionally and do some moderating.. That leaves us with 20? Seems like enough. I just had this thought because of the current state.. Of course, Anton just walked in and locked a bunch of threads, so it seems like I was just be presumptuous.

Prometheus, I think by Active he meant, you know, at least once a month. ;) Obviously they have obligations elsewhere, though, which everyone understands.

Good, bad, I'm the guy with the clichéd lines.

Usually the ninjas get to the spam at a reasonable rate. But I guess a couple more wouldn't hurt. -shrugs-

Nope, they are merely responsible (albeit not always mature!) members.

To Zag: Yeah, guess you're right.

They have a job on here, too. May not be nearly as important as those other jobs, but it's still a responsibility. 23 people for twelve forums is one away from two people per forum. So, even when one has work, there are more to patrol the forums. If you don't count the less active forums like the Maw and Library (no offense) there are more than enough to get all the forums.

I just checked it, and not counting the sleeping mods, expired contract people, the web team, or stosh, we have about 16. So maybe some more are needed... although sixteen probably would be enough if everyone could designate 2 hours every day to the forums.

Some spam threads in the halo 3 forum would probably have gone unnoticed for 3 or more pages if i hadn't helped out a bit. What people need to do is stop posting in spam threads and report them. Try asking for messenger contact info. some of the mods have that info readily available to you. You just need to know where to look. All posting does is bump the thread, and give the spammer the satisfaction they seek. We can all do our part, and make these forums a better place. Bungie.net doesn't need more moderators. They have a good team in place already. We need to stop giving them a hard time.

Key phrase, "just over the Halo 3 forum."

That just might work.

Well, don't get anyone wrong here. No one said the moderators are doing a bad job. I was merely pointing out (and others were suggesting) that there just aren't enough for the job. Quality was never mentioned. Once Anton got in that forum, for example, he did his job with machine precision. ;)

This man hit the nail on the head. You would be amazed at how fast this stuff would go away if it were ignored and reported. Too many times I have seen people respond to stuff saying " Mods please lock" or " this needs to be locked." Instead of responding try it the right way. Ignore and report. I will ask that if you do see me on that you report the thread with a link and the offender. I sometimes am busy doing other things and cannot have an in depth conversation with you.

This is a volunteer gig and most of us have lives outside of this place. I for one am going through our busy time at work. Sometimes I just want to come on here check a few things and go to bed. Of course I do wind up taking care of a few things while I am here. I hate to say it but our lives do not revolve around Bungie.net. We help out as we can and for some of us we do not have as much time as we would like to donate. Hopefully now that our hot spot is up at work I can donate a bit more time to the task.

Oh and I am going to start being a real hard ass to people who respond to spam. You will now start getting warnings and then blacklistings for it.

Hopes and dreams, Achilles...

Granted it be terrific for people to learn how to quite honestly moderate themselves. However, this is not the case now, nor does it appear to be any valid option in the near future.

Perhaps we need to face the facts and realize just how difficult the community makes it for everyone else, and themselves.

More moderators = more butting of heads. During the peak hours, there's been numerous times where a few moderators try to move a thread at once and it ends up making about 3 or 4 "Moved:" notices all over the forums.

I don't think we need more moderators. Can't you guys handle a bit of spam while I sleep? You know that as soon as a moderator is online, it's going to be taken care of. You can't be that desperate that you need a moderator on all the time.

And you know that the only people on the forums that are "moderator material" live in the US anyway; a peak hour time which is very well moderated already. I just don't see the point.

Good. People who respond to obvious spam make the spam WORSE by bumping the thread. If you didn't respond, the thread would just slide into obscurity. Responding to spammy posts essentially makes them spam on this forum given how it is sorted in reverse chronological order.
