Personally I don't think we need any more mods, Zag. But hey, that's just me...

I really don't think so either. I was just curious to see what everyone else is thinking on the matter. ;) It's a good discussion, in my opinion. Something to talk about, I guess.

You say tomato; I say potato.

I wouldn't say more were needed, but maybe a new ban feature could be used to make small infractions easier to handle. I'm thinking that a short term ban button of 6 hours to a day would be useful in the Halo 3 forum.

Good. People who respond to obvious spam make the spam WORSE by bumping the thread. If you didn't respond, the thread would just slide into obscurity. Responding to spammy posts essentially makes them spam on this forum given how it is sorted in reverse chronological order.

Posted by: Achilles1108
Oh and I am going to start being a real hard ass to people who respond to spam. You will now start getting warnings and then blacklistings for it.
I think you guys should be more strict about bumping spam posts. It annoys me to no end, and often times i express that with people i report threads to. Atleast i do my part.

Personally, I think the amount of moderators is fine. They are doing a good job, and the forums aren't that big of a mess. Sure, a couple more wouldn't hurt, but they aren't exactly needed. In any case, I would go either way. More moderators would be a good thing, even though they wouldn't be needed.

Yeah I think there are plenty of mods right now. I don't think we need anymore. Maybe one or two later on, but right now I think it's fine. I don't see the point of people posting ridiculous spam on the forums. Wow aren't they cool on a video game forum.

Well, the problem being, people don't spam to be cool. They spam to bug people, and play with fire.

I think saying "People need to report more and respond less" is great advice. The biggest flaw in that is, let's face it, people as whole won't stop responding. There will always be people responding to the spam. You can ban them all everytime someone responds to spam, but that's just more work than any of the moderators want, I would assume. I'd think battling the spam with more moderators is much better. I think just a few more might make the difference. And if other people disagree, that works too. It's not really that awful, just when I finally decided to post this thread, it was looking pretty bad.

But once again, the spam has settled back down and the forums are fine with this moderating team. So please, don't eat me. ;) I'm not saying our moderators are doing anything even close to a bad job.

Actually Zag, you are a bit wrong about that bit. People spam to get attention. Then they tend to break the rules to get friends. Spamming, in a sense, is just to see who can out do another. Or 'fun far beyond what they should' level. Yes, some spam is extremely harmful due to the age group that regularly visits the sites. But the majority, spam to make friends.

Ah, look at the lonely people...

I think we definitely will need more (active) moderators when Halo 3 hits. I mean, one man can only lock so many "ZOMG TEH HEYLOW 3#######" topics before his mouse breaks.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Honestly, I think many community-related problems would simply disappear if elitism was brought into B.net. Too bad the web team is agaisnt it.

  • 07.27.2007 9:13 PM PDT

If anything the # of those kinds of posts will decrease. The only reason it's flooded now is because people have nothing better to do. When it hits, they won't come here as often, and if they do, it might....*might*...be a constructive and possibly thought out topic...but I figure most will be preoccupied with H3.

Edit: Elitism is what starts flame wars. Less spam would be around, but people would then be fighting amongst themselves.

Possibly, but I think this could be countermanded if you had a normal member who is responisble (I can name a few very good suggestions, not that it matters) to represent the group. I think most people would think twice if they were threatened of losing their privelages.

Too bad the web team is against it.

Haha, what? What does that even mean? They're not against 'elitism', they think it's an irrelevant issue and anyone who complains about it existing (or not existing) is living in some fantasy world. And they are. This thread has nothing to do with it. I'm not sure why you brought it up. :P

I brought it up because I felt it was a viable solution to the same issue that you felt more moderators would fix. As far as "what does it mean?", it means exactly what it says. The web team is against it. They've stated before that they don't feel elitism could benefit the community on a whole.

But I digress.

What people need to do is stop posting in spam threads and report them. Try asking for messenger contact info. some of the mods have that info readily available to you. You just need to know where to look. All posting does is bump the thread, and give the spammer the satisfaction they seek. We can all do our part, and make these forums a better place. Bungie.net doesn't need more moderators.

This man hit the nail on the head. You would be amazed at how fast this stuff would go away if it were ignored and reported. Too many times I have seen people respond to stuff saying " Mods please lock" or " this needs to be locked." Instead of responding try it the right way. Ignore and report. I will ask that if you do see me on that you report the thread with a link and the offender. I sometimes am busy doing other things and cannot have an in depth conversation with you.

This is a volunteer gig and most of us have lives outside of this place. I for one am going through our busy time at work. Sometimes I just want to come on here check a few things and go to bed. Of course I do wind up taking care of a few things while I am here. I hate to say it but our lives do not revolve around Bungie.net. We help out as we can and for some of us we do not have as much time as we would like to donate. Hopefully now that our hot spot is up at work I can donate a bit more time to the task.

I don’t have any problem with the number of moderators and stuff it rely doesn’t effect me ‘cuz I know the forms are kind of a public place, I sad kind of sins the sit is Bungie’s, and people are going to be stupid and post stupid things some times, but I find it funny how most every one was all for the idea of having more ninjas and stuff until the ninjas them selves and other higher ups started to give there input on the topic and then every one abruptly started kissing ass and quick say things along the lines of “O no that’s a bad idea every thing is fine and the moderators are going a grate”. Now that’s not to say that the moderators are doing a bad job no there doing ok.

Just an observation I made while reading this forum : D

Your exactly right time is the whole problem,
You wont often find a mod online at 1:00am in the morning, well you would if i were one, but im not because of all the warnings ( evilcam, ash55 im lookin at you, lol just kidding guys you do a great job of shuting me up.)

  • 07.27.2007 10:49 PM PDT

I always wanted to be a ninja. partly because i see spam threads and all sorts of terrible things at ungodly hours of the morning when my insomnia has led me to not sleep and think " I should lock this". But then the next day i see that the ninjas and the moderators have TCB (taken care of business).

we dont need more ninjas, just less foolish posters as said many times in this thread

This is a fine idea. A wonderful idea, even. What would make it even better, I think, is the strict and consistent enforcement of such a policy.

Oh, and Brute is awesome.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

I have read the Code of Conduct and I always read stickies but the Terms of Use just bore me to death. I started to read them...got bored...and left...

Hey you saw my sig! :)
Their was a time when this was under a post. Simpler times; no Halo 3 Forum and no search. Simpler times. Happy about search though.

I think they do a good job, of course if we still had Shiska as a mod...

I just thought of a way to combat the spam, just fill up the front page of the forum with locked stickies and you will never see spam again.

Well, tons of locked stickies could be considered spam to most...They would have to all well thought to stickies (not that I agree with you...) I can't even maintain an intelligent page of topics going in my own chapter.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

The onlything I'm worried about is the last couple weeks before Halo 3 releases, if we have a repeat of the Halo 2 leak, we would need alot of moderation on the forums.
