My turn to post a 'theory', I guess.
50 mods. All with full powers. All with scheduled times to be on MSN. Not restrained to specific forums.
PAY THEM. WITH MONEY.
LOTS OF MONEY.
What you are describing are employees, not mods. The ninjas are doing this in their free time, and do not have to be on a schedule. If Bungie tried to make mods work on a schedule, then many would quit. They simply can't always be on at certain times. Paying them money would give them incentive to do the job, but I really don't think that Bungie would want to pay people to do the job that many users would be willing to do for free. And I would hate to think that the forums could get bad enough to where Bungie would need to actually pay people to moderate. And the current mods are not restricted to certain forums. Some may only like to be seen in certain places, but they can moderate and post anywhere they wish.

And 50 mods? That would be intense. I don't know if they could find that many members that they trust.

50 mods is way too much I agree. I think however you'd be surprised how many they could trust. I know if I was a moderator I would feel a sense of pride and I would want to do a good job to get peoples respect and also because I hate rule-breakers.

I imagine others feel the same, if you made 100 random members a mod for the day I'd say about 1/10 of that quantity would want to prove themselves and do a good job. Multiply that by the community and you would be surprised the amount of moderator potential there is.

I look in groups and I can see people who I think would make great mods. Perhaps this is a bit ambiguous and I am pulling up random figures but think about it. Perhaps a few more mods would just give the community its last little bit of needed grooming.

*sigh* I knew I should have posted in greater detail.
Why 50? Because it's more than 49.
Why all full powers ie. Master Ninjas? So users and the 'lower' ninjas don't have to waste time trying to contact the 'best of the best of the best'.
Why scheduled times? Perhaps my wording was too strong; the mods would simply be assigned a time period; they would work in shifts, reducing work load. Why do you think shifts were invented?
Why unrestrained: Meh. Why not?
Why money? Screw it, I was half-joking anyway. Give them free XBL gold accounts instead. Or something.

The problem of adding new forum ninjas is finding Forum Ninjas good enough or qualified enough. Bungie wouldn't want to have a 10 year old kid being a Forum Ninja.

Eh, I know you probably didn't mean it this way but age really doesn't matter too much. Some of the current moderators were "young" when they started. Age =/= maturity. That's what matters, and the younger moderators have maturity in spades.

What I meant was a 10 year old kid who isn't very mature. But thanks for informing me about the moderators. I thought that they were in their 30's when they became mods.

The majority of them still aren't even thirty yet.. ;) A few are barely 20. :P

Anyway, Bungie never hands moderator positions out willy-nilly. And you can't apply, either. They only pick (key word, here) the people than can trust.

Some Mods got in because they knew other moderators, so its also good to be in the right crowd. ;)

Granted, "who you know" might have been a factor in some of the cases, but that aside, those chosen as moderators were still upstanding members. For the most part, anyway.

The fact is that most of the outstanding members of the community...

-TGP-

Why should members have to be outstanding to become moderators? All that does is encourages "LOOK AT MEEEEEEE!!!" competitions. Moderators should be selected mostly from those in the community who've kept their heads down, toed the line, participated (while not necessarily being outstanding community members) and have been around long enough to be granted the position (18 months+ imo).

I also don't think moderators should be recruited in batches - the web team should always be open to the possibility of new moderators, and the mod team should always be on the look out for members who meet the criteria. Moderator numbers should in no way be related to the overall membership levels of the site - if someone is active + trusted enough to be a moderator, then they SHOULD be a moderator. If there's no one who is trusted enough - then there's no new moderators until some such person appears.

All that said - its Achronos who makes the decisions, and he has always done it as batch recruitment of high-activity members with no history of rule breaking on consultation with his mods. While i disagree with this stance, this is likely the way it is going to stay, and no amount of "We need more mods" posts will change that.

Don't try and troll. All the moderators are moderators because they were known to other moderators. How else would they be known to be trustworthy? Obviously a moderator is going to put forward a name they know well, rather than some randomer they've never so much as exchanged a word with.

Isn't it like that in any type of position of authority? Guys, there's no conspiracy or something. Moderators are picked for their responsibility, maturity, and trustworthiness. Knowing people is part of it, because if they don't know you, they don't know if you're trustworthy, responsible, and mature. :P

Anyway, it sounds like the major agreement on this is that the mods are doing a fine job, and I over-reacted for 5 minutes about a little spam. Interesting conversation though.

I know one special moderator that turned 30!!

Who's a big boy??!! Who's a big boy??!! [waits for ban from Achil----erh..eh, nevermind]

Anyways, the mods actually represent a diverse age demographic, but it still remains pretty much a "bell-curve". You have your "young-ins" like TGP and then your more "seasoned veterans" like Recon. While the rest of the mods fall pretty much in the middle of the two. I think it's a pretty good mix myself, TGP is pulling pranks and Recon is threatening to, "turn this car around...RIGHT NOW!" Eh, it all works out.

Anyway, I think they are doing a good job and that we don't need more, but it's always better to have too much of something that too little.
