It seems like I see a problem:
* Do NOT reply to spam.
* You may (and in some cases, should) tell new posters what they may have done wrong, but do so politely. Don't EVER flame.
I'm guessing that the first and second rules here aren't related to each other, but it seems like a lot of people try to quickly reply to spam in the instance of the second rule, and to mention that no one should reply to the spam. I have done this in certain instances when spam was already at the top of the page, but I regret it because it doesn't help anything. People still reply to the spam.
So those posts - the "helpful" replies to spam - do nothing.
I've sympathized for a lot of people who have gotten blacklisted, without any warnings, for trying to be helpful in a spam topic, which generally would include posting in the topic to tell others to stop and reporting the topic.
This rule makes it a little easier though. You have to remember that no matter what your intentions were, you'll still get blacklisted.
If the person clearly is new but is unaware that what he's doing is against the rules, I'd suggest a PM. The two rules I quoted generally don't mix. You can tell the difference between someone who is new and someone who is spamming. The latter case does not need to be told why, because they won't change anything.
So now that this new rule is implemented, I'd just stay away from spam at all costs.
