My thumbsticks will be your Doom.... sorry 'bout that.
My Stats

There are so many questions to ask about how Halo 2 will differ from the original. In a weekly update Frankie mentioned how the HUD was totally changing (or that much progress was made on it or something juicy). But all we have seen so far is pretty much the same as before, plus apperently the Elites HUD in MP is just a purple Spartan's display (is this a rumour?).

My take on it is this. There is no way Bungie will let us see what the official HUD looks like before Nov 9th. They're just using something low-key for practical purposes and saving the real blockbuster stuff like the HUD for opening day.

Has anyone out there played the MP at this years e3/fanfest? Can anyone report on this?

From what I've heard, mainly from IGN and HBO (halo.bungie.org) is that the HUD that the elites used were the same, just purple. You are correct though in the analysis that these are probably just mock ups for the people to use during E3, it seems unlikely, that Bungie would even release this information considering how secretive they are with absolutely everything. The only definite news we know are that Elites are playable in MP, emblems and custom paint jobs, vehicle boarding/destruction, plasma sword, dual wielding, SMGs, and thats pretty much it. Sad to say, wish we knew more.

I'm particularly interested in the changes that Bungie's going to implement to the HUD, as you said. If they're reworking it, it might have a more useful image, such as actually looking like the inside of the Spartan visor.

I agree, I wouldn't be surprised if they gave the "inside of the visor" hud so it makes you feel more like your actually playing as "John, AKA Master Cheif"...

Actually, aside the shape, the screen you see, is EXACTLY what the Spartans see from their HUD's. It's described in the books that they have a link to see their shields, and a biomonitor (health bar). Additionally, guns sync up to their helmets so that they can use the scopes, and get a readout on ammunition. Also there's a radar mentioned with bleeps for people. So actually, what you see in Halo the game, is what the Spartans see. Just read Halo: Fall of Reach. It's quite amusing actually that they give real REASON as to those statistics. The only thing I could say that would make it more "realistic" (quoted because...well it's a video game), would be to shape the view such as in Metroid Prime. The view might be warped in certain areas or have visual blocks.
