Many people want this resolution (1440x900). Its a standard resololution that all other games seem to support. Will this resolution ever be added in Halo 2?

  • 07.30.2007 8:45 AM PDT

I doubt it. Maybe in a patch.

Thats very disappointing for a game this well funded. I think nearly every game I've played in the last few years has supported 1440x900. Its not like its an uncommon resolution.

Why is 1440x900 special? 1920x1200 works for me, or even 1680x1050.

1440x900 is the native resolution for 19" Widescreen LCD monitors, which is a common type of monitor these days.

Many games can have resolutions added unto them fairly easily. For instance, with Battlefield 2, all one has to do is add "+szx 1440 +szy 900" in the target (found by right clicking the icon) and the game will be forced to run at 1440x900. In other games, a .ini file can be edited to add more resolutions. I have found no such solution for Halo 2 Vista.

EDIT: I should also add that Halo 1 PC allows me to choose 1440x900 by default.

Halo PC does allow you to choose 1440x900 and other 16:10 resolutions natively, but the game doesn't scale the res properly.

True...but running 1280x720 on a 1440x900 native monitor isn't too pretty either.

Playing Halo 2 on the monitors non-native resolution makes the game look really blurry. It needs to be fixed. I don't know who to contact about this issue because no one seems to support the game.

A lot of gamers? You speak for the populace then? I would think that the majority of actual gamers own 17' monitors. I've polled at least on three different popular forums with the same results; the resolution people use the most comes with these three in the top: 1280x1024, 1024x768, and 800x600. 1440x900 is wide screen, and any sensible gamer would know a lot of games do not support wide screen. Hell, not only games, but websites as well. When they made wide screen monitors, the only thing they had in mind was making your computer more like a movie theater, and that's about the only place where a wide screen monitor thrives; when playing wide screen movies.

Though as for wondering who to contact about the issue; there isn't anyone to contact. Bungie certainly doesn't care. You can try h2vista.net as some of the Hired Gun employees browse the forums answering questions every now and then.

What resolution is better for an LCD screen?

I disagree. Games are becoming more and more cinematic as their production values get bigger and bigger, games are now more influenced by movies than ever before. The widescreen presentation looks great on any game that makes good use of it. In particular it's nice with 1st-person viewpoints, as it better emulates the field of vision the human eye has, which is a lot wider than it is tall.

Wide-res games are becoming very popular now days. Most games I have can run at 1680x1050. Although I have a crappy graphics card.

It's real easy to get around this. If your monitor's default resolution doesn't match what the game offers.....just run it windowed. Here's my 22" monitor with a native resolution of 1680x1050 running Halo PC windowed at 1440x900. The added benefit is that I can see my TS window as well.

I thought 1440x900 was a 16-9 ratio, maybe I'm wroing

1440/90 = 16

900/100= 9

oh I see now, they have to be divided by the same number?

1440/90 = 16

900/90 = 10

therefore 16:10?

1280x1024 is 5:4, 1280x720 is 16:9, and 1440x900 is 16:10.

You mean in FPS games, as that is where it would only be appealing.

Tell you what. You show me ten games in production that take advantage of wide screen monitors. Considering no one does CG cinematics any more (all in-game cut scenes nowadays so it feels like you're experiencing it), I'd like to at least then see 10 FPS games that are encouraging wide screen monitors.

Nonetheless, Agamemnon, widescreen monitor and resolution support by developers would be nice.

I find that the only way to play Halo 2 is by going widescreen. The 70 degree field of view in a basic 4:3 aspect ratio makes it nearly unplayable for most PC gamers.

Perhaps to a certain extent, but not any time soon. Talk about a nightmare for certain programs and websites for having to support wide screen monitors.

Despite the fact that the FOV stays at 70 degress no matter what resolution you have it at?

What it is.

You can just take the resolution and divide it. (1440/900 = 1.6. 16/10 = 1.6 16/9 = 1.7777). And many games now days are in face supporting widescreen resolutions. Of course EA is the only stupid company that thinks having a widescreen monitor gives an advantage so they don't put widescreen support into their games...Other than that, widescreen in general is becoming more popular. HDTV is the future and most people are going to have to get them(or this expensive little box so you can actually watch tv on regular TV's)...eh, now i'm just rambling. Anywho, I don't believe widescreen is that uncommon. It's probably not the majority with gamers but it is becoming popular.

To sort out these aspect ratio problems.

We get the term X:Y by dividing the horizontal resolution by X and the vertical resolution by Y (or better yet multiplying X by Y to get the vertical resolution). Therefore 1280x720 is 16:9 because 1280/16

Grr! Wrongo! It goes up to 90 degrees on a 16:9 aspect ratio. I'm talking about Halo 2, not CE.

90 Degree FOV works for me really well, I didn't get a widescreen because it was enough and I didn't have enough money.
Agamemnon, does that hack work for Halo 2 in addition to Halo 1? I've been wrestling whether or not to buy Halo 2 and honestly, untill I can hack it to make it 90 degree vertical and horizontal FOV it's a no-go.

No, it does not. Sorry. Stick to your Xbox version. There's nothing new on the PC version.
