A note on performance issues:

After running Halo2 just fine on an old 2004 computer, and then upgrading to a new, beefy computer at the start of this year, I found that on the new computer Halo2 had choppy performance where the game would stutter like a heartbeat, updating the screen at maybe 10 fps (estimated). The sound played fine despite the video's choppiness.

After a run-through with MS' customer service reps, the issue was finally discovered to be that I had two audio cards active, my normal one, and then one for HDMI audio through my video card. Disabling the HDMI one (since I don't use it) in the Device manager (hit win+R and type devmgmt.msc) under "Sound, video and game controllers" was what finally resolved the issue.

The important thing is that if this is the issue giving you performance troubles it will not be cleared up when you run Halo2 with the -nosound parameter. Choppy performance will be just as bad with that parameter as without. This is one you'll have to check for manually.

ugh I bought H2v today and have spent all day trying to figure out my problem. I put the disc in and it autoruns but all that shows up is a blue background and the title bar says halo 2 for windows vista. I've done everything I can really. I just want to be able to play at some point. No options at all come up to install the game just a blue background. Please help!

Ok, the brief explanation.

Ive owned Halo PC for quite a few years now, i used to play it alot online about 2 years ago. sometime than (atleast a few months before Halo 3 came out) I decided to Uninstall it, since I was spending more time on the console. Anyway! Ive recently Installed it again on the same PC, When i Attempted to play Online, It requested that i update it with patches or updates or W/E none the less, I agreed and allowed it to access the internet through my firewall upon each request.

So after that was all finished I rebooted the game and went into Multiplayer and attempted to join an online match, I was able to join the lobby and when i refresh the list it seems to work fine! but whenever i actually attempt to join anyof these games I get "Negotiating to Network" Or something to that! and than it disconnects me to the main menu!

Im honestly not sure what this is all about? Any Advice? Id greatly appreciate it.

My reasons for reinstall, were that i bought acouple copies of Halo PC for my 360 buddies for XMAS so we could play and enjoy the "Classic" halo experience! I also miss Blood Gulch lol.

Halo 2 Vista is an unsupported,
piece of crap software,
please refer to Microsoft for any help you may require,
they will try to get back to you within the decade.

I search tirelessly for the secrets of the one known as the webmaster and for ling-ling's head.

Well if anybody has any issues installing either Halo CE or Halo 2 for Vista due to compatibility errors this might help.

-First if you installed the game without success, uninstall it and follow the following steps.
Insert your game disk into your DVD-ROM and go into my computer
-Click on whatever device your CD or DVD drive is in then DO NOT run the disk but click on the drive and bring up the files that are on the disk
-hunt around for the install.exe <listed as a Install Wizard icon> and once you find it right click it and go to Properties
-Once in the properites window go to the compatibility tab and run the install.exe in compatibility mode for XP, Vista, or maybe 98 depending on what you need for your game. Also be sure to check off the "run as administrator" box as well to prevent mishaps.
-Then begin the install process as normal but be sure to set whatever shortcut the game gives you into the comaptbility mode using the same steps as I suggested <Setting the shortcut in compatibility mode is completely optional>
-THese steps should help the game install with the compatible settings.

Hey guys, I couldn't see any other place to post this so...

I've had Halo 2 for a while now and decided to see what the whole "map creation" thing was about. And so I inserted my CD, installed the map editor.

My problem is, none of the ".exe" files open. Well, except for one but it errors out and gives the classic "H2Tools.exe has stopped working".

I've tried reinstalling, restarting and various compatibility modes (I'm running Windows 7, a problem?) but they still refuse to open.

Any ideas?

P.S. The actual game works fine, its just this map editor thing that doesn't work.

50 in H2/H3? Great, but you still fail at this.

Post it here since this forum offers little help: http://forums.gamesforwindows.com/

Also, if halo 2 pc has issues under 7, try this: http://forums.gamesforwindows.com/t/8958.aspx

Is there a way to add new video cards to the list in config.txt, or to bypass that list so that I can run Halo without it?

I'm unable to run Halo at all, because it hits my video card (Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT), doesn't find it listed in config.txt, and exits with an "unknown video card" error.

I've tried everything here, and Lockout still won't load. :(
Any suggestions?

Hey, I have a GTS 250 1GB, Win. 7 64 bit, AMD 955@3.7ghz and 8GB RAM. I Max this game with everything on in 1920x1080 @ 60fps. of course I have V-synch on and whatnot, however not every multiplayer map is smooth, It only seems to be the maps that were part of the "map pack" on the xbox version that I'm having trouble with. Is there a reason with that???

for some reason I can't join or find any live games today for Halo 2 PC. this normally isn't a problem. any ideas?

  • 05.19.2010 2:13 PM PDT

Try to go into your live account first or do campaign or something, then try to sign in. I also have a problem where my mic stopped being recognized. I checked the connections in the back and Windows recognizes it, but Halo 2 doesn't. Any ideas?

I see a new problem that has been discussed in more than one forum: as far as I can tell, no one can get online on PC Halo 2 period. This has been going on for 2 to 3 days as of this post. We can connect to Windows Live and talk to friends and voice chat, we can play on our LAN servers, we can host a game by ourselves with no one else, and we can do the campaign. The only thing we can't do is join online games and get people to join the online games we create.

I don't know about everyone else, but personally, I just got on the computer, chatting with a friend. We felt like playing a few games of Halo 2. (Keep in mind I did nothing to my computer ever since I got on Halo 2 last time we played, and my friend didn't do anything either.) When we came on, not only could he not join me and I couldn't join him, but no one else joined our own games, and we couldn't join or see anyone else's! We decided to play Halo 1 that day.

It seams as if Microsoft or Bungie suddenly decide to shut down the PC Halo 2 servers without telling us. Did they, or is this a problem that needs to be resolved?

I'm having the years-old issue with Halo 2 and had it on my computer until recently (had to reset it to factory default settings) and now have the MSI error happening with trying to reinstall the game.

My computer is completely up-to-date with important and necessary minor updates and still cannot install the game.

I have a copy of a diagnostics test that was run not two minutes ago waiting here if it is necessary. I will update it if it is needed depending on when I get a response.

Generalization of my computer?
Vista, x64, 6GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT graphics card, Pentium Dual-Core CPU and my computer is roughly two years old and my disc is roughly... 10 months?, something like that, and has been spending most of it's life within the case not being jostled or anything.

Any further information into getting this issue resolved would be greatly appreciated as I can't seem to find concrete information on it anywhere.

Thank you for reading.

~Bug

An Edit:

It's extremely old news that Bungie decided to shut down Halo 2 servers. I heard about this at least... 5 months ago.

You don't kick a man when they're down, so don't teabag me when I'm dead!

I have an Intel chipset family 965 integrated runnish graphics card that can only share 358MB at a time with my 3GB of RAM. Hopefully the Intel Core 2 Duo (2GHz) could pull it up, but...
Would it run at all on my laptop?
Halo 1 does, but... on full graphics, when the flood come out... <10fps lol

Hello all.
I am having a big problem trying to run Halo 1 on my laptop.
The game installs and runs fine, right up until you leave the cryo room on the first level. After this the computer completely locks up. There is no blue or black screen and no error message, it just freezes on the last frame and the sound locks. You can't minimise the window or call up task manager, the only way out is to turn the laptop off.
I have already given the computer to a knowledgeable PC shop who gave it a good going over. Aside from a dirty heatsink and a few bits of malware they could find nothing. They concluded that the game must be pushing the laptop beyond what it's capable of.
I am doubtful of this though. It is a Toshiba Satellite A30-141 (hardly the best I know) and it's basic spec is as follows:
Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHZ
512mb RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon 9000
full spec can be found here.

Now to me these specs seem to more than meet the requirements to run Halo. My very old and long gone desktop could run it without crashing.
I have tried finding new drivers but the ones on the Toshiba website are no newer, and the ones from ATI won't install.
If it could be of any relevance I am also using a Logitech gamepad but this works fine right until the game locks.

I would be extremely grateful to anyone who could help me to fix this. I just want to enjoy this fantastic game like I have before.

Thanks and regards
Adam

plz excuse the reply note, when actually it's a new topic. i play Halo 2 online, and i think i have (accidentally) toggled all messaging OFF. I don't know how i did it, but hope someone can tell me the toggle/switch command to correct. thanks.

To improve framerate, I forced on V-Sync in my nvidia control panel. That helped slightly but on certain missions the game still lags. I have a powerfull rig: 6GB ram, intel i7, GTX260.

I'ts quite ironic how the game lags on HIGH spec rigs
