The End

‘The conscious is cancerous if allowed to linger’

"Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there."

Okay well I am constantly getting members join my group who have no posts in the main forums and have only joined my group! They are quite obviously spammers but I cannot ban them straight away incase my suspitions are inaccurate.

What I would like in groups is a feature to see people IP adresses, that way I can see who these people are and perhaps if problems continue IP ban the user to ensure problems are easier resolved.

Please comment constructively because I personally think this feature would be useful and quite easy to implement.

Halo3Planet, the place for all things Halo 3..

Need help finding skulls, make sure to go here.

Achronos has stated many times that using IP adresses to ban people in any way is not a good thing to do. It is too easy for people to change their IP adresses, some only have to unplug their router and plug them back in.

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

As long as you hold all the power you can easily clean up any mess they might do. Of course you can just boot them and be done with it.

Oh for crying out loud. There must be a way, how does disembodied soul message people who are blacklisted when they use alt accounts? Sometimes I hate the Internet.

Not to intentionally double post (well actually I am).

* The test group was created.
* The default "member" role had its security options altered to not include any active selections and renamed to "member-silenced".
* A new role of "member-with voice" was created with the standard member rights of "post in forums" and "submit news".
* Test members joined the open membership and were able to see/read the forums, but not reply and not create threads.
* When promoted to "member-with voice" they could then use the forums normally.

Based on this testing, an open membership group can be configured to allow any Bungie.Net members to join and view the group's resources, but not interact with them.

Admins concerned about spamming or takeovers could implement these roles and advise all new members (via sticky thread and/or news article) that the group has membership requirements (linked gamertag, posting history in the public forums, age requirements, etc.) Members wanting voice could then be directed to request an "upgrade" to voice by PM'ing a specific admin (or admins) and requesting a review.

This can allow new members to also "preview" your group in order to decide if they really want to be a member.

Anyone have anything else to add?
Good job Recon. I may implement that feature...

"Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind." - Albert Einstien

IP banning for site mods and group mods are completely different. The Bungie.net moderators are trusted moderators who know how to use IP's. It makes perfect sense for them to IP ban members, because they are in control of the general forum and have more authority than the average member.

If a group admin could see the IP's of any of his members, he could then proceed to distribute that IP and alot of trouble could happen for that person (viruses, spyware, hackers, etc). IP's your basically the key to your computer in a way, and you do not want members with access to them in any way.

You do your username proud ;-) When it comes to things like IP's I really don't know much. I just know that it is basically your computers code and by blocking it you block them totally from your site. At least that is what I think...

the difficulty with providing that information (to group admins for example) would mean that anyone could then create a group and then use it (much like I used my recently created group) to test how things work.

With almost no effort, someone could use that feature and a group to find out how the site's IP blocking works and use that information to more effectively bypass or get around those blocks.
I suppose that makes sense. Stupid rule breakers. Oh Recon, did you get my PM?

I don't think Bungie wants (Or needs) to be responsible for giving people a big list of IP addresses. There are lots of things you can do with an IP address, provided the network (Or computer) at that address is not properly secured. Plus, IP banning is inefficient because a majority of ISPs assign IP addresses dynamically and many of those have short DHCP leases so the user's IP will be different from day to day or week to week.

Bungie will never let you do that. If someone is very suspicious, then decline their membership or send them a pm with questions.

Ya, I generally believe everything AW says on these issues.

By the way, Recon, I joined your group and the forum is visible but I cannot post -- just as planned.... it works :-)

Lots of people join groups and then never post. Why does this make them spammers? I'm confused with your logic.

Because his group has had trouble with spammers recently. I would know because I'm a mod in his group

Then close your membership and kick out the spammers. There's no way in hell Achronos is going to give members the power to ban IP's. Most IP addresses are dynamic anyway, which means it's variably impossible to ban the IP.
