I've read somewhere (another forum, i dunno) that XBConnect is superior to Xbox LIVE in the sense that it's just as effective, and it's free.

Now, my question is - What is the difference between the two, in interface and in functions?

Are LIVE games playable over XBConnect? I've also heard that HALO was playable over XBConnect. I thought it wasn't LIVE compatible, so how can you play online with XBC?

I've only played one game o live - Mechassault - and wondered how XBC works, and if it's got the headset compatibility and like Optimatch and stuff.

Anyone wanna help me out that knows their stuff?

Xbox live is far supeiror, it is unlaggy, very organzied, looks snappy and is great for finding games and such, xbox conect sux ass, its laggy and trashy, you have to use your comp to find games and its shabby looking

Xbox Live is a lot better.

XBConnect is completely different to Live. It's a program for your PC that enables you to play system link games online (so if you can play over a LAN you can play through XBC, and Live support isn't a factor). It has none of the features of Xbox Live, and the headset is only supported in games that support it anyway (so not in Halo). Most games also limit you to playing people using the same format (so NTSC vs. NTSC and PAL vs. PAL only). However, it is free.

So, If i already have XBL, then what else would I need for XB connect, and are you sure that it is not laggy for halo, cause otherwise i will not play it.

Yes it is very laggy, and here is the reason why.

If you host a game, it is being hosted off YOUR xbox and uploading to the net. If you have DSL or Cable at home, you typically have a limited upload rate. For example I run SBC DSL, my upload rate is 128Kbs, and my download is around 500Kbs. This means that no matter what other players download speed is, it will be limited to YOUR upload. This is a major cause of lag. Just to compare this, A typical LAN party will use a 10/100 switching hub. Meaning if all Xbox's on the network can run 100Mbs they will. compare the transfer rate.
128kbs = 128,000 Bytes per second
100Mbs = 100,000,000 Bytes per second
Huge difference

Xbox Live works in a different fashion, and this is why HALO is not compatible.
Live Hosts all the game off the server, not the individual xbox's connecting. This means a much smaller amount of data has to come from your xbox up to the web, so a 128Kbs upload rate is not too bad.
Xbox Connect and GameSpy Xbox Tunnel only facilitate the System link feature, which was designed for 10/100Mbs transfer rates.

I hope this helps.

To connect to XBC, you just need your PC on the same network as your Xbox, as well as the software itself.
Live Hosts all the game off the server
No, Xbox Live still uses individual Xboxes as hosts. But it's in a "walled-garden", so there's no general Internet data to worry about.

Really? I could of swore that a article I read stated that the servers would host, and this was an advantage over PS2 internet play. Of course that was a long time ago, and may of been marketing hype.... you know how the marketing people can say things that are not true....

If it is a "walled-garden", what kind of data is tranmiteed and how does this differ from system link transmissions? Or do you even know.. i bet there is a tech article on this somewhere.....

Anyways.... I have heard, although not seen that if you host a Xboc Connect game using a full T1 connection the lag is greatly reduced, and all the peeps who join with a 128Kbs up load look like they are running in slowmotion, easy pickings.
