IRC Guide
The guide to talking on IRC.
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It's one of the oldest, and best, chatting protocols. Learn how to use IRC and you have a little internet culture.
OK, first of all, there are many clients out there, but my personal favourite is xChat, it's multiplatform and GPLed, and that's allways good news, the official windows build costs money (to try and get people to use OSS) but you can easily get a free Windows build.
First of all, you need xChat. Under windows, open up a browser, and head over to http://www.silverex.org/download/ and download the installer, and run to install like anything else. Under debian-based linux distros, do a 'sudo apt-get install xchat'. I'll presume anyone running anything else can work it out (http://www.xchat.org/download/ is probably a place to start). If not, just google it. Google is your friend.
Now start up xChat. You should be shown a window like this:
http://www.xchat.org/docs/start/xchat-1-servlist.png
First of all, fill in nicknames, and the like I use Lattyware, Latty, Lattyware_ as my three nicks.
Click on 'Add', type in 'Bungie' and then click off it. Now hit 'Edit'. Click on 'newserver/6667', delete all of that, and type in 'irc.arg-irc.net' and then click off it. You will probably want to hit connect to this network at startup, and then type '#CI' in 'Channels to join'
Once done, hit close. Now select 'Skip network list on startup, so it is checked, and click on 'Bungie' then click connect. Next time you start xChat you should automatically connect. When it is done connecting it will automatically join the channel and you can talk.
Basic commands:
Replace stuff in <>s with what it is saying. So /nick <nickname> would become /nick Lattyware, say.
/nick <nickname> - Change your nickname to this.
/me <text> - This makes your formatting change, and makes you speak in third person. So you'd do '/me slaps himself' and others would see '*Lattyware slaps himself'. People often refer to this a purple text, because in mIRC, a popular (but not great) client, it is purple.
/join #<channelname> - Join a channel. Channels allways start with a '#'. If a channel doesn't exist, you will create it by joining it.
/part - Leaves the channel you are in. (add #<channelname> to leave a different one). If you are the last person in it, the channel will disappear.
/topic <topictext> - Change channel topic. Only if you are an op if +t is set. If no topictext, it displays the topic.
/mode <mode> <nick> - Change mode. Without <nick> change channel mode. Only for ops.
/kick <nick> - Kicks someone from the channel. Only for ops.
Have fun. Play nice, and obey the ops.
Don't ask for opper privalages. It won't get you them. We give ops to those who we think will be fair and a good op. Asking will probably make us less likely to give them to you.
