You just chose to lock this one. Good job.

Don't send me group invites.

This kind of discussion belongs in the Septagon.

Anyway, this idea wouldn't work because people would abuse it way too much.

"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

This idea has been proposed many times before. I'll see if I can recall the problem. I think it went something like this:

If people could lock their own threads, they would abuse the fact that if they were proposing an argument and losing, they would be able to simply ignore the points and lock the thread so that there would be no more counter-points.

If I dig something up on a past thread, I'll link you to it.

For future reference, this is a thread about the Bungie.net Community, and therefore belongs in the Bungie.net Community forum.

Here's one.

Really, it's not that big of a deal. If someone wants their thread locked, they can ask the mods to do it, or just edit their first post and title so that no one else posts.

And if you have flamers still posting, hopefully the mods will notice and act properly. The mods are responsible for that kind of stuff...they wouldn't be doing what they do otherwise...

And here's another.

Oh yes

Psh, then some fool would lock his thread as soon as someone made fun of him, or got off topic, or whatever.

edit: Haha, here's what I said way back then in that thread Mabian linked to:

Nope, because then little kids would close them once they get flamed and owned.

i think this would be a great idea. because if you make a thread and then dont like it you can lock it.
brilliant!

i mean lock the threads that only you create, no one elses

That's actually not a bad idea, saves the mods from having to worry about locking a thread someone already edited. Of course once it's locked it should not be able to be unlocked.

Good, bad, I'm the guy with the clichéd lines.

If I remember correctly, IGN's forums has it set up so you can lock your own thread within 90 minutes of making it. It works fairly well, in my opinion.

Recon kind of touched on it, but my main problem with this idea, which is obviously implemented on many other forums, is that it silences discussion. Once you post a thread, it is not yours, it is the community's. The only part of it that is yours is the first post (and all subsequent posts you make). So the thread creator has no right to silence discussion, because its not his discussion, its the community's, he just brought it up.

Not to mention a group of people could spam a forum and lock all their topics to take up the whole front page, and that would just be annoying.

You don't need the ability to lock your own thread to spam a forum with topics. :P

Locking your own thread is useful if you make a topic someone else made, so people don't keep pushing yours to the top. It's also useful if people start flaming and/or spamming in the topic. But I suppose locking threads in those instances could be done by the person requesting it to a moderator.

Right now, threads are locked because they have violated a rule.

It is possible (but not always easy) to go to any locked thread and reason out why it was locked.

Giving members the ability to lock threads would undermine that feature. And the core concept that it is based on. (more of that later)

Here's the deal. A member can create a topic, but they do not own it. I get it all the time via PM and publicly. "why did you lock MY thread?"

It's not their thread. Once created, the thread belongs to this site, this community and the members of this site. It's not just theirs, it is mine, and yours. If we have something that we want to say about that subject, we should be allowed to say it (within the guidelines).

If I create a poll, and the answers are not going the way that I like, that is because the members are participating and giving their voice to the topic. If they disagree with me, I should be encouraged to hear them out, not shut them down.

No one should have the ability to silence others. We create threads, but once created they have a life of their own, a life that is given to it by the whole community, and that is a powerful thing.

The ninjas have the ability to lock because we are trusted to not use that power for personal, malicious or improper reasons. We lock threads not to "silence", but to enforce the rules that we all agreed to follow when we became members.

Locking a valid thread for any other purpose is just a way to silence others. No one, not even the topic creator, should have that ability.

If anything there should be a "Request Lock" button for the forum creator.
It would bring up a window like the unleash ninjas ban window and the creator can state why he wants it locked. The request will then be reviewed by mods.
I'm not sure if that would be possible on the public forums (give each person who makes a thread special permission to request a lock)

If not that, then there should be a "Report" or "Report Abuse" for everyone. This way people don't have to hunt down a mod by private message to report an out of control thread or one that is just plain wrong.

Interesting suggestion. It's been made many times before, and as you mentioned, it would prove very helpful.

I wonder.......
