Subject: we should have the ability to lock our own thread.

Good, bad, I'm the guy with the clichéd lines.

I think there should be a link to report a thread. And once clicked brings you to a screen where you can type a message. Then after that report is sent the report link from the thread is gone, at least unless a mod re-enables it (like if someone abused the feature and there wasn't a way to get it back then there would be no way for someone to report it in the future). And if multiple people are in the report message screen and someone has sent a message already anyone else that hits submit is given an alert that says it has already been reported and their message is not sent. Then make a notice in the rules that anyone that abused the feature will be banned. Oh and you can't report closed threads.

Also I think the only mods that get these notices are the ones that want them. So like in whatever secret club house you guys have you can be like "sign me up scotty."

I've never understood why people think that because a feature could be abused means it shouldn't happen. Sure, kitchen knives can be abused, and used to kill people, but does that mean they shouldn't be manufactured?

Anything has the potential to be abused, but that generally doesn't stop things from being created. Nevertheless, I think this would be unnecessary. There will probably end up being a ton of threads locked because someone didn't agree with the original poster.

The problem with this is that kitchen knives serve a real purpose; to cut things. This idea isn't really that necessary, so the fact that it could be so horribly abused is a big problem.

Wow. Everyone in this thread can really argue points well. I will try to throw my observations in.

When ever someone desperately wants a thread locked they usually PM a mod or change the thread title to 'Mods please lock' or words to that effect. Usually within about 10 minuites the mods have locked it or posted in the thread saying 'Why should I lock this thread?' (obviously they are more poetic about it than me).
Why have a button to do it when you can easily change the thread title or PM a mod? It seems strange to me that we should implement a 'feature' that can already be done.

Ultima, go to any Invision Board. They're all the same. The only thing that really allows you tell one from the other is the theme in place. The rest of the forum has you spending more time customizing your profile so you can stand out on a page just by a few flashy images, instead of spending time on your posts and the actual words coming out of your mouth. (Yeah, ok, we're typing, but you know what I mean. ;)

QFT!

Bungie.net is very organized and intented to be kept that way. Downloading pics and crazy avatars, sigs, etc. would be chaos. Members (like Zag said) need to concentrate on the quality of their posts and not whip a few words together like, "yur a stupid litle nub, you need to be baned!" or stuff like that. Locking your own posts might lead to a little confusion as well. You have to remeber those few dumbasses here and there that would post and locks threads constatly just to spam and make pages and pages of locked threads. B.net is pretty good how it is.

We have virtually decimated everything that a forum is except for its basic function.

That's because this is Bungie.net.

Honestly, I've seen many other forums and their features. They have their own custom avatars, image tags, post counts, reputations, you name it.

And it works because they're mature. They don't post vulgar images in tags or avatars, and they don't flaunt their post counts or reps as being "better" than everyone else.

Bungie.net is not mature. Sure, there are lot of upstanding and great people here. I've met some real quality folks on this board, but the community as a whole has some growing up to do.

Lets just say this- we can't even have public sigs anymore. That tells me we can't even be trusted with signatures (though if Achronos/Web Team did this to make the site cleaner then I apologize for misconstruing. )

Honestly there are a lot of things that can make this site cooler, but I have a feeling that with Halo 3 comes a lot of cool features. But as of now Bungie.net is just a chill place for talkin' and such, I guess.

That's because, for the most part, trusting users is exceedingly dangerous. Even the "good" members here have been known to get warned/banned for crossing a line.

And in this particular case, it isn't even about trusting members. It is about a philosophy of how forums should work. You don't get to shut down threads you create because once created a thread becomes its own entity, owned by the community, and you are merely a participant. My forum, my rules. Deal with it.

That being said, I don't believe in most of the cries of "elitism" that a lot of people seem to throw about with some features. For example, the reason we don't have varying titles is not because of elitism, but because I haven't found the time to do them "right." We also don't have a "report thread" feature because I haven't found the time to do it yet, not because I'm worried about abuse (because designed correctly, every abusive action someone can do with a report feature is easily thwarted, and, dare I say, self-defeating for the abuser - mods know what I mean here).

I find it dumb how whenever a new feature is thought up that is member controlled it is instantly shot down by, "It will be abused by everyone". There is absolutely no trust in this community is there? You don't even think of trying it to see what might happen, every one of these is just blown off like it will only cause problems. Stop fearing your own community and making excuses. If it is abused, get rid of it. Don't just be paranoid about everything.

This feature has only one negative, the person can lock a topic when he doesn't get his way. It isn't even a full negative, especially when members are free to discuss it further in either groups or a new thread. At least this way members can have a more direct form of assistance with moderators.

If not this, then at least implement a report post/member button to help members help moderators.

I still do not understand why members want to manipulate the trust system. Isn't it good the way it is? Why add these types of privleges to the trust system? What advantage would it have?

Sigs were made like they are as a design choice - we felt they often cluttered up posts, and with the same text that nobody wanted to read. The way they are now, if someone cares, they can look, otherwise, it won't be there.

And you guys are not prepared for the things bungie.net will be able to do once Halo 3 ships.

Oh, and btw, a "report thread" feature has been designed, all that remains is the implementation part. Unfortunately, Halo 3 is taking up all of my time, so no ETA on that... probably not until a release after the Halo 3 launch, but hopefully this year. And don't worry, everyone will be able to use it, and no, it won't be abusable, even though it will appear to be easily abused, partially for my amusement and partially to trap those that think they will be able to abuse it. :)

How severe a violation do you suggest for the abuse feature? That is to say, if I see someone call someone else the n-word, I won't report it now, as it's a long way to go for an infraction that isn't really punished very often. However, if there's a little button there that expedites the process, you can expect to get a lot more reports...

Maybe we should all get into the habit of PMing a user to warn them about a violation, whether we tell a mod or not. The Code of Conduct is one of the best kept secrets of B.Net, after all, and maybe it would help to let some people in on it.

Also, I'm glad that the kind of people that will want to abuse the report thread feature don't come to the Septagon. Well, I'm glad that they don't come here for many reasons, but I'm definitely happy that this is going to blindside them.

That's great news. I can't wait to see it, and I'm glad that the feature has been extensively thought-through to avoid overloading the moderators with abuse! It also sounds like it will be a somewhat secretive process -- in other words, a user might hit "Report" and a few minutes later see the results, but he or she won't know how it happened. I think that is the most preferable way to do things -- first, to prevent a system that is transparent enough that users will try to "game" it, and second, because secretive ninja things are SOOO Bungie :-)

Well, I am glad that at least one member suggestion got through. The "report thread" option is in my opinion the most useful thing we could add to this forum.

And customizing a profile shows who you are, and what you enjoy. It isn't to show off, what it is for is to have other member narrow down who likes similar things, so you can at least tell they are interesting in what you are. Sure, there are plenty of other ways to do that. But on Bungie.net there are only two ways. Look at past posts, or join a group. On any other forum, there are things from groups, to profiles that list interests, home websites, contact info, etc. Sure, you can PM them for some of that info, but still

I am really just playing devil's advocate here. That is what I do in most any conversation. Not only to see what the opposing view is like, but to find out more about the reasoning behind the administration here for removing so many features.

Although I think it was a bit much to say that trusting your own community is "outright dangerous". That is blatantly saying to your community that, "We cant trust you." A certain amount of trust is needed, imo.
