That's the worst when you get booted because they can't beat you legitimately. I play Halo like Frankie, when I'm on fire I own, but when I suck I REALLY suck. When I get my rare moment of glory I can't stand being booted because they can't handle it. I feel your pain.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time. I know who you are. You are destiny.

Oh, and stupid HaloMaps.org put up a Halo 2 Vista trainer for all to download. Way to go HM.
Wow. I got nothing to say.

Incredible feedback and thank you ALL! And congrats on sticking that banshee! Not an easy manuever I'm sure.

Here's a little recap on why I consider what THEY did to be cheating and not just unsporty. First off, the server has a rep for booting people who play well against the server host. That being said, THIS time around, he was booting half the red team right before a heavy blue assault. This didn't happen just once, mind you, but 3+ times in less than fifteen minutes. Booting people to strictly give your team a strong and immediate advantage is certainly a form of cheating. No it isn't modding or glitching, but you don't have to do either of those to cheat.

Another example is when someone from the opposing team joins your team and begins betraying everyone. I believe actions like this fall far beyond the realm of just unsportly.

Please post your own experiences here, as we are all very interested to hear them.

You're right, it falls under the category of griefing and jack assery, but I wouldn't think it constitutes anything more than negative feedback.

It's servers like the ES server that gives Halo 2 a bad name... I mean if the host is THAT bad at the game where they use their hostly powers to turn the tide in their favor to win the round, they shouldn't even play the game, let alone host a dedicated server. However, if you just don't go to their server, then perhaps more people will catch on, and then he or she will get the point... or they'll just be stubborn and keep preying on newcomers... I mean, really, is cheating to win even FUN?! To me, no challenge is just boring. I would rather lose fighting my hardest against a worthy foe than win against a helpless opponent, especially if I put them in that helpless state of being. To Tyrant122312 and players like him, keep fighting the good fight -- just avoid idiot losers like the ES clan. In fact, I wouldn't put it past the ES clan to start using the trainer that is so publicly accessible from HM now... is there any way to propose that the trainer be removed from the site? All it's gonna do is provoke those who really need a trainer to make a server and then cheat into oblivion. If it didn't have an invulnerability hack, then it wouldn't be that big of a deal... but the last thing we need is players who can't play that won't die.

The ES Clan has the right in this. Why? Simply because it's their server. But of course, it's immoral, unfair, and ruins the gameplay. You, as a guest of their server, are subject to whatever stupidity they choose to impose upon their server.

As for labeling camping as a form of cheating, I disagree. In fact, camping is like a staple of Capture the Flag games because it's effective. Bases in maps like Coagulation were designed for easy defense. Most players deem it "too cheap" and deem themselves "too good" to do it as they lose the game. They don't realize their pride/arrogance isn't as important as the game itself. I'm glad you're still holding down the fort the right way.

The majority of people will naturally, try to make anything that someone better than them, or someone beating them, seem bad. For example, camping, teaming, weapon noob, aimbotter, and more. These people are restricted to verbal abuse and failing to kill them. However, if you give them power, they're going to abuse it, because they can't stand someone beating them. Even if it means having no one in the game. They'll do it.

They won't have no one in the game. After they kick all the good strategically inclined people, they get to dumb themselves down with a server full of little kids.

I think I'm going to occasionally pop into the ES server and tell everyone about the host, to maybe scare some people away. :D

And as an unwritten rule of Halo 2, every little kid who plays DOES have a microphone, so they'll have headaches beyond belief. =D

Still, though, it's only for single-player. Although, that means you can get through all those Campaign achievements quicker...

lol. I like the combo word "jack assery." I'll have to add that to my smack :-)

I agree that when you go into another server, you risk the host being a prick. This is why Earth City is more than likely going to settle on one of the empty MS servers. That way no one will have home advantage, not even me. And as far as theguy who mentioned "who would we fight?" Well, Earth City isn't a clan. It's a community, a community which hosts serveral clans and supports people who want to start their own. And besides, when you're playing against people you know will play the game the way it was meant to be played, then there's nothing wrong with losing.

To that extent, I'll be posting games, rules, and suggested ways to play within the Earth City forums to help clarify the way a game should be played, not just in terms of cheating but also over all conduct... such as how to play Zombies the RIGHT way, and how not to turn a game of CTF into Team Slayer.

You know, I was worried until I read the name D0D0. I've played on the "Es Clan Server", in fact I was privately invited to its first games. D0D0 is not the Server operator, Sypher117 is the Server operator. He's a good guy and only boots people that have bad connections, but he always warns you before doing so. D0D0 is a D-bag who cheats whenever he can. I can say that the ES clan server is a great place to play Halo, as its pretty much the only place I play on, and It is most definitely not a "Cheater operated server". If you don't believe me, come join the server and play with me "SenoirBlueSky"! See ya on Halo!

And you're right. I had been playing on there server for a couple of weeks before I ran into any issues with whoever was in charge (and it was stated that someone other than Sypher was running it) so it is very possible that someone else temporarily took over that night and decided to go nuts with the games. They are usually running my favorite game type (CTF on Coag) which is why I usually join, but that night, whoever was running the server seemed a little more ...active ...than usual. Just the same, I want to find a neutral server for now.

You know what the difference between cheaters and non-cheaters? Non-cheaters enjoy the experience the fun of the game just the way it is. Cheaters get their fun by denying that experience to others. So the best way to deal with cheaters is to deny them that. Quit the server if someones cheating and pretty soon he'll be playing with himself. You'd be denying him his experience the same way he's denying yours.

It definitely worked for Halo PC. I still have yet to set up a dedicated server for Halo 2, but if I understand correctly, a dedicated server can not be run on the same machine as an actual in game player (it says there is already an instance of Halo 2 running). Or were you not referring to dedicated servers, but just people who host games directly from the game itself?

  • 08.06.2007 9:57 AM PDT

I can understand that. I've run into a few servers that have "Questionable" Server operators, but so far "ES Clan server" hasn't done anything like that to me. The only bad things I've found about the Server is that every once in a while I lose the connection to the server, but I've been re-assured that I wasn't kicked from the server on purpose.

I was referring to (in Halo 2 Vista's case) a peer-hosted Gold-only server. I'm not sure if they work on dedicated servers or not, however on Halo 1 PC the host of a non-dedicated server could have whatever trainer/mod/whathaveyou loaded and they were free to use it however they pleased.

You know what I used to do with betrayers on Halo PC? When I was hosting, I'd simply turn on a trainer and spawn camp the H3LL out of 'em ;-) There's nothing more rewarding in a tournament than than owning an actual cheater to the point where they quit without any fear of retaliation. And just to clarify, I would not actually parcipate in the game itself just to keep things fair, but would sit on the sidelines and wait. I may do that for the Vista varient. Keep in mind that only hosts can use trainers.

You know what's even more rewarding than that? Actually kicking a cheater's ass without needing to cheat yourself. :P
