"Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind." - Albert Einstien

Well, since it is pretty much stagnant now. I think we should pick it back up again.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Option 1 - Get a few new moderators for that section and get the ball rolling again.

Option 2 - Get a few new moderators and open up the forum to posts by members. Members can then post Video, Audio, and Artwork for critique and talk about how they did things and what they can improve on to make it better. We can also have Hall of Fame stickies where a few dedicated moderators choose several above average pieces of artwork that they then have the members vote upon to add to the Hall of Fame sticky.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can go into more detail about the second option if I need to.

If I am not mistaken, the moderators are now able to create threads in The Gallery, and have been for quite some time. Although, again, I may be mistaken. As for members posting, I against it. If you would want the forum to pick up pace again, simply wait till the developers get a great screenshot for us to caption. Till then, I believe the forum is perfect the way it is. As the old saying goes, why fix something that isn't broken?

But it is broken. The Fan Art contest is nearing 6 months overdue, there is virtually nothing happening there. What I am saying is revamping it, making it new again, not just re-instating new management. I think The Gallery has far more potential then what has been done with it.

I understand what you are saying, yet I still don't think this would fix the so called 'issue'. The Gallery is doing fine, like everything else, it has hit a bump in the road. Remember the flood and it's 'Rate the ________ of the person above you' threads? Those were horrible, and they were the cause of a minor bump. The Gallery on the other hand has hit a hill. There are few images posted, because there are few images worth posting. The Gallery is a fine forum to go and read, have a chuckle or two, but it should not become a forum where it would be spammed with useless images and idiotic conversations. And yes, I know it wouldn't exactly be 'spammed' per se, but there would be useless posts and threads here and there.

What I am trying to say, is that a revamp isn't needed. It will fix itself, the forums always do. The only reason it seems 'dead' at the moment is since there are few images even worth posting, and those images have been posted. Give it time.

"Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind." - Albert Einstien

Why do we assume they will spam it? Just because we have a Halo 3 forum doesn't mean it is constantly spammed with halo 1 talk. Why? Because there are forums where people can fulfill that need. Eventually it will sort itself out and people will know what goes there and what doesn't. It is no different from opening up the Halo 3 forum.

Here and there isn't an issue, cause it is unavoidable no matter what, it is what happens on the internet. So there is really no reason to fear member submitted content. What good is a gallery if no one can use it? A Gallery by definition is to show off art, not make captions for screenshots. What is the point of the forum if we cannot use it for it's intended purpose?

Ultima, I really think you're too trusting in the community as a whole. Sure, there's plenty of us that would use things as intended, but there's so many people that would do things just to 'grind some gears', if you will.

I'd certainly vote for the first option though. Maybe Bungie should a member (even a non-moderator) that would do really great caption contests and what-not.

I was thinking about reviving the fan art threads. It's something I enjoy seeing and participating in and I would love it if it could return. Perhaps not via the gallery, but rather a thread(s) in the septagon/underground.

I HATE THE CAPTION CONTESTS! I swear, they are off topic in themselves for that forum, and are really just an excuse for spam. Post as many captions as possible for one dumb image.

We fear something we cannot avoid. If it we are so sure members are going to abuse everything as much as possible, then why aren't they already? We know what the gallery is, and people who don't go there already probably won't go there in the future. It really isn't like we have 30,000 members waiting to jump and spam the hell out of it.

The "it will be abused" thing is tired and old. I understand it for other things, but this is just getting ridiculous. If people are stupid, there are moderators to deal with them, that is why I said have more moderators to kick them into gear and out of the wrong forum. If you want I will do it all myself.

Or a chance for members to have some fun with images, and maybe even get a title. Just like the webcams. If you don't like Caption Contests, fine. No one asks you to participate.

30,000? Nah. A lot? Sure. Once it becomes more common knowledge that things are happening in the Gallery, it will become far more 'spammed'. The difference between the Septagon and the Gallery is that the Gallery has 'conversation' that everyone can participate in easily. Some guy who hangs out in the Halo 3 Forum way more often than anywhere else would find it rather difficult to just walk in here and participate in some of our discussions. It'd be much easier for him to go post pictures in some other forum.

The "it will be abused" thing is tired and old. I understand it for other things, but this is just getting ridiculous. If people are stupid, there are moderators to deal with them, that is why I said have more moderators to kick them into gear and out of the wrong forum.

Maybe you just miss all the spammers? The moderators keep these forums really clean, and they're doing a pretty great job. Perhaps the proof that we have a great moderating team is that you don't think there are loads of spammers and irresponsible users here. It's the internet. Anonymity (or the illusion thereof) allows people to run wild anywhere, and Bungie.net is one of those places.
If you want I will do it all myself.
Good luck with that. >_>

I understand anonymity. I do see spammers, but everyone over-exaggerates their influence. I just want to know why you fight so hard to prevent change of anything. "Just leave it, it is fine". Where will that get us? No where. You are acting as if the majority of people here only spam, or at least a great number. There are probably no more than a couple hundred compared to the 500,000+ members. Most of which reside in off-topic sections with alot more activity.

The Gallery sees virtually no activity, so a spammer there would receive no props for his work, since no one would really see it except a minority of the community. From what I see about how moderators handle spammers, they probably get rid of 10 or 20 a day. But why must we let them win? Isn't their goal to destroy our community? Who gives a damn about what spammers do and don't do? If they come, get rid of them, that is how you handle them. Don't give them another thought. Don't let them ruin everything, including possibilities to change and make the community more than it already is.

If you can't give me another reason NOT to do this other than spammers, then I see no point in arguing that any further. There are always spammers, so avoiding them is stupid.

Ah, look at the lonely people...

The simple truth is that Frankie and Luke and the rest of the community team is busy and that fell by the wayside.

I think that some duties (such as posting pictures in the gallery for caption contests) should be left to trusted members who are given special security permissions. It would keep the community ball rolling and take some of the load off of the Community Team.

I just think it would be better to have all fan-made movies, videos, and music in one place not only to make it easier to find and discuss, but to keep it out of all the other forums since it is a bit off topic.

"Just leave it, it is fine." That won't get us anywhere. However, spamsville is somewhere. That's somewhere I don't want to go. I've said it before. It only takes a handful of people to ruin a good thing for the entire community.

The Gallery sees virtually no activity, so a spammer there would receive no props for his work, since no one would really see it except a minority of the community. From what I see about how moderators handle spammers, they probably get rid of 10 or 20 a day. But why must we let them win? Isn't their goal to destroy our community? The gallery sees no activity because that's the way it was designed. Once opened up, it would see tons of public attention and would turn into spam and pissing contests.

If you can't give me another reason NOT to do this other than spammers, then I see no point in arguing that any further. There are always spammers, so avoiding them is stupid.

Avoiding them is stupid? Is that supposed to justify doing more things despite the fact that it can and will get tons of spam?

Let the Web team, site admins, or whoever would decide to open up The Gallery weigh the pros and cons of opening it or leaving it closed.

"Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind." - Albert Einstien

You know... not ever member here is gonna spam, probably not even half a percent of the people here spam, more like a thousandth of a percent of the members her are dedicated to spam. You are blowing this spam fear out of proportion. It may not take alot of people to make alot of spam, but it also doesn't take alot of work to get rid of a few spammers. The only way spam could be a problem is if over 200 members started spamming the forum relentlessly, causing mayhem even on the blacklisting side just by sheer numbers. 10 people can easily be dealt with quickly.

Even the Halo 3 forum had its share of spammers, but that didn't get it closed down did it? (Deutch God or whatever his name was). Trying to prevent spam on any forum completely is like trying to cure cancer, it isn't possible. So stop using it as an excuse to limit The Gallery to a few caption threads(or excuses for spam to me). If that is all we are gonna do with the forum, just remove it. I would rather have it gone than have it just sit there doing nothing. Of course, I would like it to become something far more than to have it removed.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

In my opinion, a forum that has become as dead as the Gallery is useless.

No, the Gallery is not fine as it is. Yes, it needs some changes. But I'm not sure about opening the forum completely. In my opinion, I'm kind of ambivalent as to whether it would be better simply having revived activity of the type that it used to have, or whether it should be a place with a renewed purpose in allowing fans to create their own threads.

Perhaps a popular and well-known private group would be a better place for fans to submit artwork?

But regardless, it is hard to deny that it would be nice if fans had a place on Bungie.net to submit their creative works. Currently, links to various types of fan art -- music, videos, and pictures -- are typically placed in either the Flood, the Halo 3 forum, or the Halo 2 forum. I see nothing wrong with having a place on this site dedicated to allowing fans to express their creativity. I do not think that spam would be an issue, although flaming might. But as Zag so aptly pointed out, that's why we have a dedicated and competent moderating team.

Regardless of whether The Gallery should become the place for fans to submit their artwork, or whether it would be better to direct such efforts to a private group, I do think that the Gallery needs to have some kind of revived purpose. Whether those changes consist of reviving the forum to the way it used to be, or making more radical changes to allow fans to create threads is up to Bungie. But at the moment, I think we can all agree that the Gallery currently is not as lively or as fun as it could be.

Yeah, maybe we should start with a fresh Art Submission Thread and see where it goes from there.

I like your ideas, however, we can't really say who gets what when they win. They might not get anything but recognition.

I'd really like to see it updated more frequently though, with more contests rather than just the caption contests. I'd visit that forum everyday if it was updated regularly.
