I'll put the CD in and start the download, but when it reaches 94% (putput.map) it stops and encounters and error. My CD used to work fine before. Any ideas whats wrong?

Check your CD for scratches, and if there are none, clean the disc anyway. If it doesn't work and the disc appears to be flawless, then it's potentially your drive that isn't reading the CD properly.

odds are the cd is scratched there. or the disk got heated up or something happened to cause the disk to get a flaw at that spot so the data wont read. also, try another disk. if it works fine than it isnt your drive, its the cd. there is also the miniscual chance that the computer is rejecting that particular file. have you had halo on that comp before? if so have you installed new antivirus/spyware/ect. or possibly gotten a virus/program that has conflicts with that file?

if you've actually bought the game and you cd isn't working, I suggest downloading the game and using your original cd-key.

And thus, our hapless hero is then fated to create "t3heford3".

And is it "downloading" when you install something? clue me in please someone.

Technically it would not be considered "downloading" when you install from a CD. Installing from a CD is more like copying the info from the CD to the hard drive. Downloading means to acquire a file from another computer/server through the use of the internet.

Anyways, I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you have a valid, purchased copy with a valid, purchased CD key, then you can download the game for your own purposes. Just be warned that it is really not as easy as you think. I believe Bungie added a copy protection system after the 1.03 patch. (Although I may be mistaken on the version number)

Before the words "software pirate" start getting flung around like so much monkey poo, let it be known from someone with too much time on their hand who actually did a little research, that there are legitimate uses fir No-CD patches, Cracked .EXE's, and CD images. Not everyone who downloads and uses them does so for illegal gain. I've No-CD patched many of my games in an effort to reduce wear and tear on my rather large collection of games. It's much more sensible to use the CD once then pack it away so it won't be damaged and use the program with a No-CD patch or whatever.

I'm sure some of you remember the things I've said to people asking for CD keys or places to download the game. There is a difference between a little twit looking for a free game than a person who has a legitimate excuse to be asking about it. And I still hate software pirates. They make things much harder for the rest of us.

In the event the copy protection kicks in, use a virtual drive application such as DAEMON Tools to load the 20 MB Mini-Image of Halo CE (available here) and you can enjoy the game without worrying about having your disc in your drive, ever. My disc works perfectly fine but I use the Mini-Image out of sheer convenience anyway.

I'd be careful passing along that kind of information SC. Some of the mods aren't the most forgiving souls. It's one thing to discuss it, but quite another to pass along links to that sort of thing.

Daemon tools is perfectly legal their stance on cracks etc are outlined below:

1 - Questions about cracks / warez / isoz are strictly forbidden here. Breaking this rule will lead to an immediate and permanent ban! We definately won't support the above practices! Remember: good software is worth buying!

Daemon tools is a perfectly legit tool for mounting images of CD's. SC's link to Halo CE is ok because Custom Edition is free after all. Now, making an image for use with Daemon tools for your own personal use from a CD that you purchased and STILL own/have in your possession if perfectly fine. However, it is NOT ok to make an image and then share it with others.

Edit: Hmmm it appears that the link is to an actual image for Halo and not Custom Edition.........

I don't think there is a current No-CD or mini-image of Halo CE. At least I haven't found one. Most likely because there's no demand for it since so few people actually play the game.

Good, had to make sure.

As for the copy protection and CD discussion, I wish I could. Daemon, I'm sure, would mess up my somewhat buggy computer. It's the only reason I put up with Steam at all... nothing like clicking "join game" on xfire and just being able to jump in instead of having to go through the laborious process of finding a CD and putting it in your drive, waiting for the autorun window to pop up and close it, then join.

The second link in my post is a mini-image of Halo 1 PC, which is the disc that is required for both Halo 1 PC and Halo CE. It works for both... and I'm pretty sure what I've posted is not warez because it does not allow you to install Halo to your computer, it merely serves as a handy and convenient way as to not have to break out your legit CD every time you want to play Halo 2 PC or Halo CE.
