Ok, I'm a fairly new "official" member of the Bungie forums, however I have been comming to look at the forums since Halo: Combat Evolved but never really thought the need to post. However, with Halo 2 and all its wonderful glory, I have been visiting the forums much more and posting more. I have a couple major issues with the way the forum is set up though. The first thing is is that there is no way to search for old posts or threads you've posted in. This causes a major problem because unless you create a really exciting thread, you might not recieve many posts. Still, if you post, you want to see what other people have said in your response. The second thing I hate also has to do with searching. Again, there is no way to search old posts which causes many double or tripple threads or even more. Another problem I have is how I come back to the forums an hour later and can't find any of the threads I've posted in because there is no way to sort your threads under a certain topic! This really gets on my nerves. If I could make one suggestion to Bungie, it would be to invest in Invision Power Board. This board is used on many sites, including mine www.invertfilms.com. Please Bungie, I love your site, I love your games... I just don't like your forums.

If this type of thread has already been posted, I'm sorry, its because of LACK OF A SEARCH BAR!

You can see the origional post at: http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=1191409&vi ewreplies=true

I only updated it here because people said it might be taken more to heart by Bungie.

yoo•zel- ('yoo-zhul): slang: vb.

Officium quod Fidelitas.

You have a very misleading topic, look into correcting that.

But it is fact that the forums are very fast paced and it is hard to keep track of threads. The best way to do so is to bookmark your threads or threads of interest. I have no idea about a current search function at this time, but we can always hope for one.

Sorry, I didn't mean to make it misleading. I should have called it "Is anyone else sick of the Bungie.net forum "style" like my old one, but I got lazy and just copied pasted the post, but made up a quick name.

I agree that Bungie should upgrade to Invision Power Board. IPB is better than other forum software like phpBB and vBulletin. I run several Invision boards, and they are perfectly stable, and can cope with a massive amount of active users. Posts appear on time, there's a search feature, and they are extremely easy to use. And since IPB can be modified easily, it wouldn't be too hard for PHP programmers to integrate it into Bungie's website like these forums.

Just wanted to add my amen to doing some work on the forum interface. A number of points have been brought up over the last while and before. I'll try to get back here soon with some constructive lists but no promises, the weekend looms ;-)

Do you honestly think that Bungie haven't been through this?

They use IBB because it copes so well under stress (you may laugh at that, but try using other software and putting it under so much pressure). Plus, upgrading now would mean redoing the whole site, redoing thousands of chapters, redoing the skins, redoing the IPB (IPB being PHP) to ASP .NET, etc.

This has also been excessively talked about...
If Bungie allow custom avatars, how are they going to stop them being obscene? And are they going to approve hundreds, maybe even thousands, of avatars every day?
Unfortunately, it doesn't work.

I didn't say it was full proof, but I am a member of multiple forums that allow you to have your own avitars and there never seems to be a problem with it.

Welcome to Bungie.net.

What that means, is that you've just signed up to be part of a community run by super-cool Bungie -- but, however, that is full of idiots. Trust me, this forum even gets dedicated spammers. People are just that sad.

Now see the trouble with a search feature (it's still a great thing to have nonetheless) is that there will be more people who wouldn't bother using it and make new posts of semi-old topics, that group would include a lot of new people because you notice recently most don't even bother to see which forum is for what. and then how would the search work? would it be based on keywords, because it might not catch all topics that have very differently worded subjects than what one searches for. Just some things to consider. But it would still be awesome for finding an old thread to reference in a new one.

Search engines (as far as web design goes) aren't that hard to make, especially for the Bnet team. I'm sure if they make one, it'll be like the news search.

I hate that, I HATE THAT.

I hate when people Intentionally name a thread "SECRET LEVEL FOUND" and then go in and its completly fake. Its so annoying and then you have malicious spammers. Its to bad there is no way to ban it before it starts.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

Eh, I dont really care. If Bungie upgrades, and my account gets deleted for some reason though, I will be pissed.

Oh, and you can have your own Avatar... just submit a theme so good it gets used. Or get hired by Bungie, or become a mod. I for one agree with Bungie about having no custom Avatars. These ones work just fine for me.

No, BAD search engines are easy to make. The UI is easy to make too. What is hard is to make a comprehensive and FAST search for our several thousand forums that doesn't hurt the performance of the site.

We made a choice - we decided not to waste time with a broken search and focus on making a good one. And the test versions of the forum search we have are looking promising. Still not there yet, but getting close.

This would be a downgrade. PHP and the IPB itself would blow up in our faces if we tried to use it. We stress tested it when looking for board software. Ideal's didn't blow up under stress, and they use ASP.NET, the same tech we use. PHP doesn't play with ASP.NET. Besides lacking in search, the only real issue with Ideal's software is that the post indexing gets screwed up occassionally (more often under heavy load). That leads to posts (and entire pages) missing or wrongly ordered. That is being fixed as I speak.

I bookmark the threads I make, and remove them as they die. I also do this with threads I'm engaged in a lengthy conversation in, threads of random interest, etc.
