Subject: Are there really that many cheaters?

Don't assume anything, because it makes an "ASS-" out of "-U-" and "-ME"

I have trouble with online play. I've only been on Xbox LIVE for about 3 months and played Halo 2 for half that. I do have a reliable broad band connection but still I'm in Australia and, well it's a long way from America.

Latency is what I blame for having being sniped after running behind a wall, but 1-3 seconds later; and being killed by a grenade that appeared to be too far away too even hurt me (or kill me when I have full shield); killed by a shotgun that was well out of range; and someone fly half way across Lockout with a sword, but I charge at them with one and it doesn't do any damage.

But the way that some people go one about cheaters; it seems that about a quarter of the players cheat!

I feel that the problem is only in the latency, and that Halo 2 has many problems with online play. I'm sure Halo 3 will be much better, as I've seen in the beta videos.

So question one: Is cheating really that widespread? And question two (this is to those who played the Halo 3 beta): Will/does Halo 3 have a much better online experience, as in latency fixes?

I agree that most of the time it is lag in the game that people think is cheating. I'm american and I notice when I play someone from overseas regardless of host there is a lot of lag in the game. I think it is just too much distance to cover. As for cheating I really don't see much of it anymore, most of the time it is people lagging and they think it is cheating. Hopefully halo 3 will be better.

There arnt as many cheaters as before. I still see some standbying in matchmaking, but its not as bad as it used to be. Its easy to tell if the host has cheated. I'll tell you how too tell if you have been a victim of team standby. When the other team starts their network manipulation you will start teleporting around the map. Check the score board. Check if theres one guy on the other team in red bar and 2 or 3 with green or yellow bars. Now check your team. If your team is all in red bar at this point, you are a victim. You will have to check fast though! Because you will go into blue screen in about 2 secs after you start teleporting around. The guy in red bar on the other team is usually connection host.

I hope this will help some people.

There are tons of cheaters around level 28+. Once you get there you will understand.

I think more people kill themselves on their own team than being stanbyed

That happens to me because my connection is terrible + I' in the UK though. I think it's funny when I have to defend myself in the post game lobby, people accuse me of standbying etc. I just have to explain that my connection is -blam!- and I live halfway around the world from them.

I was accused of cheating once because my brother decided to download a bunch of anime in the middle of one of my games.

But I spend most of my time screwing around between levels 10 and 20, and I hardly ever see cheaters.

Another way to see if you've been cheated is to check the statistics a while after the game on Bungie.net. It will say the game's statistics are "unreliable" if Cheating has taken place. Bare in mind it will say this if a lot of BXR-ing and other button glitches took place as well so it's not the best way to check.

Never eat yellow snow, unless of course, you spilled your Mt. Dew!

Unreliable occurs to if the other team entirely quits. People learn a new word like "standby" and feel like it must be cheating if they are losing or anything remotely quirky happens. People still don't realize that being non-host means what they are seeing on screen may not be 100% to what the host console is registering. I don't come across actual blatant cheating. There are always the crappy connections you come across but the times I know for sure cheating has occured is in team assault. The enemy team gets the bomb into the circle, followed by blue screen, and upon returning the bomb is already planted. Timely crap like that or at the very end of a tight slayer match are generally for sure cheaters.

Kevin's post = breath of fresh air.
Take it from this guy people, he knows what he's talking about.

Second accounts are NOT cheating:

Ive gotten standbyed in skirmish because the kids were so bad they couldnt even get the bomb to our base. Ive gotten standbyed because peole were losing in Team slayer. ranked games arent even fun anymore because of all the bull-blam!- that goes on.

Freedom of Speech does not equal "Freedom from Consequences when one speaks".

It is a right, and all rights have responsibilities associated with them. Ignore the responsibility, and you tend to lose the right.

You asked about the Halo 3 experience... I have latency issues like you described sometimes, yet when I played the Beta it was MUCH BETTER. The increased frame rate made things much smoother, and better for accurate aiming. Also, there is an option for you to select that makes the server find comparable connections a priority. Might add a few more seconds between games, but worth it if you have a questionable broadband line.

As far as Halo 2 goes, depending upon your definition of cheating, it can be pretty bad. By Bungie's rules, there is cheating going on in every game by at least one player.

I Totally agree, although, during the beta i had to completely give up big team battles due to latency - it was pretty horrible (in the UK too). That said, I loved the beta, and if it was any indication of what's to come with Halo 3, the whole experience will be about a million times better.

-- Also, as a response to other posts regarding the low level cheating going on since the reset - what if this is a strategy by bungie to reset the ranks and weed out the cheaters pre halo 3's release, to aid its overall matchmaking coolness?
