I vote for a zero tolerance policy for any and all infractions for the week either side of the release date. Post something in the wrong forum? 2-week ban. Spam, reply to spam? 2-week ban. Spoilers? Perma'd.

It'd make it a whole lot simpler for the moderators, would benefit the users who aren't idiots, and would strike the fear of The Hammer into the populace, hopefully encouraging everyone to have a really good think before posting...

It may be harsh, but when people look back on it they'll realise it was necessary. [:

I'm serious, by the way. I really think this is the best (maybe only) way of keeping the forums under control.

Well it would depend on the infraction. If it is a brand new account they can be warned first if it is minor. Of course I will only warn once. After that they only have themselves to blame.

A good combination of no sleep and some major caffeine for the mods will have to do. I guess they (mods) will feel what it’s like to be a developer on the game just before the print deadline. Lots of headaches and zero hours to sleep.

Isnt it kind of ...well wrong..to assume that every new member is a spammer? And whats the deifnition of spam in this case? Is it to post repetive threads, if so I´m blaming the site for not being informative enough when it comes to the search feature (which is crap anyway). I believe that most of these halo 3 people, that "the oldies" usually are refering to as the devils spawn, will be playing the game and not spamming the forums after sep 25th. .

Honestly I think this kind of reaction isn't needed. Bungie.net handles loads of traffic everyday and it is still here. I'm sure that a-lot of work is planned or has been done due the events of the Crackdown/Halo 3 Beta accident. Bungie.net will continue as always, it will expand to accommodate the inbound flow of new people. It is pretty much a pattern that when Bungie releases a new game that Bungie.net grows substantially. It isn't like there will be complete chaos, spam, and total confusion. Moderators will do as always, which is moderating after all, and the Web team will do whatever they do.

Ah, look at the lonely people...

I think we need some volunteer moderators for the release... The wave of spam I see on the horizon appears to be all-consuming.

That's been suggested (and shot in the face) numerous times.

I volunteer, but only on the condition that I get to use an alternate account; me wishes to ignore fruitless death threats.

Hey you saw my sig! :)
Their was a time when this was under a post. Simpler times; no Halo 3 Forum and no search. Simpler times. Happy about search though.

Repent for the end is nigh!

I'm pretty sure that the mods have a plan, at least I hope they do.

Their plan is to hope we keep cool and do what is right, and that we ignore or report the members who break the rules. The rest they can handle perfectly fine.

I vote for a 72 hour lock down... I just want to finish the game before everyone starts to run a muck!
Are you sure you can beat it in 72 hours? >.>

I think Bungie.net needs some kind of thing that makes someone that is new go directly to the forum rules everytime they go to a new forum... that sounded confusing.

I understood completely. Unfortunately, I think that would just create ZOMG WTF IS WITH THIS RULEZ PAGES? WTF BUNGIE WTF WTF WTF???? threads by the truckload.

I agree with this statement (not joking). It will give everyone time to finish the game, without having anyone to spoil it for them.

Of course it is. I think everyone's problem with the influx of 'new folk' the release of Halo 3 will bring is that we will get new members (obvious eh). It takes new members a while to understand the rules and regulations. This means that they will tend to make repeat topics and maybe be a little less civil than older members. Not to mention that the new members will of course post about halo 3 in the Underground forum on their first attempt to make a thread.

But I think that everything will go off smothly.

Bungie listens to its fans! ^.^ | Ninja .II./ You
RCG: In ur base, steelin' ur flagz. | Watch the demo, then join the carnage!

What you have to look forward to:

Day before release: 136 "OMG it's coming!!!!!!!" threads, 35 "ne1 wanna play co-op wit me 2marrow??" threads, 47 "MY PARENTS ARE TAKING ME SKIING TOMORROW I CANT PLAY THIS SUX BUNGIE!" threads...

Release day [USA]: 98 "IT DIDNT COME 2DAY!! BUNGIE WTF!!!1" threads, 230 "Wow what do u think of X, Y and Z" threads with spoilers, 96 "Y does the cheif die bungie u suk!!" threads (spoilers again), 67 "X feature isn't working and Y is borken" threads, 97 "bungei u broke da BR no BXR wtf nubs" threads, 80 "STOP POSTING SPOILZ i havent got it yet but for some reasonn am reading the halo3 forum neway" threads, 75 "the graphix are not as good as Gears" threads, 75 "the graphics are best evar!" threads, 69 "y u change X or Y from the beta it rocked now it sux change it back plz" threads (if the 'hog has been nerfed I'll be making one of these :D)...

Release day +1 [Release day in Europe etc.]: See above but halve number of threads in each category. Then add in more spoilers as more people finish the game. Add in 20+ "usa/europe sux u get it early/late" threads, and sprinkle battles about Carbine vs. BR, graphics vs. Gears, etc. etc. that start snowballing...

And remember, these will be liberally applied at all hours, and repeats of said threads will crop up in other random forums too. Especially the malicious spoiler ones, which will be posted anywhere and everywhere (because people are jerks). Also there will be at least 2 or 3 do-gooders posting "locked" or "This is in the wrong place" etc. etc. after each one, followed by thread starters showing up in the Septagon saying "wtf y u delete my thread?", which is one of the reasons I'd like to see insta-bannings, no warnings, around these days. It would just save time, and possibly number of threads mods have to deal with. Hell, a huge disclaimer could be added to the registration page for a few days before, during and after release saying "WARNING: AROUND THE RELEASE OF HALO 3, ANY AND ALL INFRACTIONS OF THESE RULES WILL LEAD TO AN INSTA-BAN, NO WARNING. EXCEPT THIS ONE. READ THE RULES CAREFULLY and happy posting!".

My suggestion to avoid (some) maddness is to post B.net rules in giant bold letters on the front page. THat way new posters will at least not have the excuse of saying "OMG WTF??? THIS IS TEH CARP!!!"

i feel bad for the mods, they have to read the spoilers

The mods know even less than us, seeing as they're kept in cages buck naked with cold water thrown on them once an hour until they're unleashed upon the forums.

Quite a few of the mods will be busy playing Halo 3 the first few days.

I know some of the ninjas aren't even big Halo fans, so hopefully they'll be here.
