I tried the halo combat evolved for PC trial, borrowed my friend's full version, and went and bought my own full version. i played it a lot and liked it a lot and i read somewhere in forums about halo CE. it says you can make custom maps and download other people's custom maps, etc. so i downloaded it and installed it, and downloaded and installed HEK with it. so halo CE works fine and ive been having fun playing on sweet maps like coldsnap, hugeass and yoyorast island. so i have some sweet ideas for my own custom maps, but i have no idea how to make it with the tools that came with HEK, like guerilla and sapien. I also read in the tutorial about tool.exe and 3ds max.

Anyways, do I need an additional program to make the map? 3ds max, or whatever? is there something i don't have to pay for that would work good? what do i have to make in those programs, then what do i have to do with it in what other programs to make them into a good map? thanks for anyone's help. but i am not experienced with making maps, so if you tell me i have to do somethign and it's something kinda complex, please tell me how to do it.

TY

Here are some video tutorials that really helped me when i made maps: http://www.halomods.com/index.php?topic=Tutorials right at the top are 9 videos that go in order. A word of advise start real simple or you are going to have a hell of a time, this is not easy.

Also we can not just explain how to do the whole thing on the forums, it is a very lengthy process.

Edit: after you watch the videos here is a sum up i made (some one correct me if im wrong):
1.Create bitmap with Paint shop pro.
2.Make reference frame in 3DS Max (Frame=small box)
3.Rename frame
4.Make skybox and rename (small level= 5000x5000x1600)
5.Move frame out of skybox
6.Convert skybox to edible mesh (right click on)
7.Highlight skybox then flip sides then change material id to 1 then clear all smoothing groups
8.Check ignore back facing then select bottom of level, set smoothing group to 2 and material id to 2
9.Add material (M key)
10.with ground selected change to UVW map
11.Select bottom, set tessellate to 0 (check 4 times)
12.Make mountains by selecting second to last boxes then raise.
13.Make them ruff by rotating random selections
14.Select all by select by id of 2
15.Go to unraped UVW then edit
16.Then make hills
17.Make base
18.Export a .JMS
19.Open CMD in HCE folder.
20.Type tool, enter
21.Type tool bitmaps levels\splinter\bitmaps
22.If a warning open Gorilla open tags\levels\splinter\bitmaps\splinter_ground.bitmap
23.Under format select format with explicit alpha, close/save
24.Back to cmd hit arrow up then enter
25.Create shader with gorilla, create new shader_enviorment
26.Select simple underflags (first box)
27.Under difuse properties then base map hit … then go to levels\splinterbitmaps\splinter_ground.bitmap
28.Primary map detail=25
29.Hit the next … go to tags\levels\b30\bitmaps\detailded_grond.bitmap
30.Secondary scale set to 25
31.Secondary detailed map tags\levels\a30\bitmaps\detailed_grass.bitmap
32.Close/save tags\levels\splinter\shaders\ name splinter_ground
33.Back to CMD, Type too structure levels\splinter splinter, hit enter
34.Go to gorilla, open levels\splinter\splinter.scenerio
35.Under skies, add, … , tags\skyies then pick one
36.Make multi player
37.Go half way down under starting equipment and set it
38.Under type o set all games
39.Close/save

There's a completely free modeling program called Gmax. (google it) On Halomaps there are tutorials on how to make a complete map with Gmax and HEK.

I used 3DS Max, there is probably a 30 day trial or you can get it other ways ;)

okay how do you determine the size of the level? like if I make the level in 3ds max, how do I know its size in comparison to the chief? how big do I need to make the reference box? or can i use master chief as a reference to get a perfect scale?

alright Ive been having some trouble with 3ds max. when I make the skybox, and select all the faces and flip them, instead of beign able to see inside the box, all it does is make it dark red. when I unselect them it makes it black. what is going on? how do I fix this? here are some images for help.

To my knowledge the skybox cannot be redone for Halo. You have to use a previous map's skybox for your map, I believe.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time. I know who you are. You are destiny.

I've heard the same. I'm no map maker myself though, so I can't argue.

i watched the tutorials, the guy makes a map from scratch with 3ds max, paintshop pro and HEK. you just have to rename it to skybox. the only thing he imports from halo is master chief for scale. all i really need help with is how to fix my problem.

That's normal. A dark red (selected) and black (deselected) means that the polygon is flipped. In 3ds Max 8 and below, you can see through flipped polygons, but in 3ds Max 9, it becomes black. Continue making a map as normal.

And now for a magical story on you're problem,

Once upon a time, Master Chief pondered heavily on how to make his polygon head invisible. (for obvious reasons).......

So Mc's friend, the lifesize Magical teapot, consulted Cheif on his delima.......

So the lifesize Magical Teapot sprinked pixie dust, that he bought on sale, all over himself.......

Chief was shocked by his amigo's performance!.......

And so he did the same......

And they lived hapily ever after, The End.

Wow, I'd be a far more intelligent and cooler guy if I had been told such beautiful stories when I was a child.
