Heyyo,
DS = Dedicated Server. Most of the big clans, or successful clans have one, and no you don't have to go out and pay $22 a month to homelan for a decent server, you can host one yourself onna separate computer.
I suggest at least these stats for a dedicated server:
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (the bigger the cpu, the less chances of lag)
1Gig of PC3200 RAM (Samsung's cheap and durable RAM, cheaper than PC2700 ram too. The more ram the lower the loading times and less chance of lag)
ATI Radeon 8500 PRO (or something like that.. just get a half-decent videocard. Remember, the server doesn't render the whole map, it loads a very basic model of it and models of players, vehicles, etc, and then does all the calcuations from there.)
Asus motherboard (Cause asus seems to make the best AMD motherboards out there)
2mbit ADSL connection (the bigger the connection, the more players you can get without lag, or high latency issues)
What a fellow clan leader is doing is he's got a comp with stats higher than those, and is gonna use that comp for hosting dedicated servers for whatever game we decide to play. Then we'll get full control of the server, and the workings. So if you tk or do something really cheap or cheating? you're banned you mofo. ;)
So yeah, he hosts the DS from that comp, tells the clan the IP so we can connect to it easily without having to use ingame browsers, and it'll run great. Of course his main gaming rig will be like, right beside it on a LAN, so he'll have no lag issues at all, so he's really happy aboot hosting. :)
Yeah, I've layed down the fundamental parts of creating clans, but there's more to it. I spent aboot a good 1/2 a day fully setting up the new clan with rules n' information.
OH! if you can, host your DS onna Linux operating system, they're much better than windows for it due to how much more efficient Linux is compared to windows. ;)
Here's a basic chart of OS efficiency:
Linux > Mac > Windows
Windows is very cpu intensive compared to the rest, but the most popular... hopefully that next version of windows learns from linux, and doesn't sap the crap outta your comp just to use window's GUI. :p
