i have a question, and need some of my friends here at bungie.net to help me out. i'll make this as short and to-the-point as possible:

when i played halo1 all the time, i would play over xbc. there would always be some squabble over 'who the *$#* has their computer on?!'
now, i have a small group i usually play with (around 6-10-ish ppl, usually). i used to have 1.5 dsl and have sinced changed to 6 comcast and have noticed a considerable difference. however, in our small group (all of us in the same state, and most pretty close), to my dismay i've still noticed lag from time to time). point: when we got our comcast, and we were playing with our small group- i thought we could do anything, like, having our daughter play on the computer at some kid's cartoon site playing flash games. the others in our group were complaining about wicked lag (we were experiencing no lag). we found something else for our daughter to do, shut the computer off- the others' lag problem solved.
there is someone who will join our group and often cause lag where there wasn't any before- now, having experienced giving others lag with my computer on before, i can only assume he is causing it with his on. i've asked several times for him to turn his off. my responses range from 'it's in sleep mode' or 'its not doing anything' or 'it can't be the problem' or 'we don't have any lag here' or something like that. he won't turn it off! once i found out they had three computers on over there. he seems adamant that his computer(s) on are not the problem and won't turn it off, despite what i've seen and asked.
last night, while playing with 3 friends of my group (who were all on the same box and have 300 dsl!) we were having no lag at all. his brother and sister got off, our next game had some noticeable lag on my end. after i told him, he said 'oh, my sister went upstairs and got online- i'll tell her to shut down!) i was done playing so i couldn't gauge it then.
** after all this (yes, i tried to keep it short)... do i have any bearing in my requests/demands for that member of our group to shut down his computer while playing with us? a member of our group's dad is a network administrator for unix- he told us that even computers in sleep mode are still branched into the network LIVE creates for our group and could have some affect on speed. i don't know why he won't shut it off. maybe he wants his kid to have something to do (while we kick ours off our computer when we play halo2), or he's just adament it's not part of the prob and won't prove us wrong. i'm just asking for a courtesey that we've given ourselves (and solved some probs).
sorry to ramble- i've come to the point where i won't play w/ them any more if thier computer is on- which strains a good friendship- which is why i am here asking. i just want to play some halo with some friends, and make it as lag-less as possible for everyone.

thanks for your time and attention... sorry so long. any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

ps bungie, if this is in wrong forum i apologize!

i'm asking if i have any right to ask/demand that he turn his computer off while we are playing together in or LIVE party.
and, it's not just me asking him to turn it off- and it's not just me getting lag with his computer on.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

You have a right to ask, but you do not have the right to demand. It is his/her choice. Not yours, ask kindly, that's all you can do.

STEP 1: Don't write such a massive block of text, its unapealing to most and will most likely not be read.
STEP 2: Yes, you do have a right to ask.

That's not an indent, that's filler. It's not the same, you lose.

i apologized for my big text originally. yes, i could have paragraphed it more but i was in a hurry and thought those of you could get the general idea. i didn't realize it would cause such a sidetrack of the issue.
(new paragraph) i think i have the right to ask. when i say 'demand', i'm referring to me telling him i just won't play w/ him anymore if he doesn't shut off.
(another new paragraph!) have any of you experienced any lag in some of your parties while someone in your party has their computer(s) on (while they, on their end, are experiencing little or none)? -or- would you want those in your party to have their computers off to avoid any potential lag they might cause?

  • 08.12.2007 12:15 PM PDT

You should at least ask him to try turning his computer off, so you can see if it's any different.

If you turn it off and there's still lag, then it's not the problem. If you turn it off and the lag disappears, there you go.

Any time you're trying to get something like this to work, you've got to be willing to trouble-shoot. He should be willing to make an attempt at alleviating that lag, but that's his choice. You probably shouldn't demand anything.

he won't even shut it off to see- and i've asked him many times and he still won't (which i think is rude). maybe 'demand' isn't the right word, then- maybe 'ultimatum' is. he'll just lose a friend as far as halo LIVE parties are concerned. i'm tired of his stubborness affecting everyone else.

If he's ruining the experience for everyone, and he's unwilling to try and solve the problem, then maybe he isn't the kind of person that you should play with. You're going to have to make the call there. None of us can do that for you.

Maybe you could tell him, "Hey, the lag is really bad and it doesn't seem like anything else has worked, so could you please try turning your computers of, or I'm going to have to ask that you don't play with us anymore." I don't know, this whole things sounds really juvenile. It's kind of ridiculous.

'juvenile and ridiculous'- just what i was thinking. i was just hoping for some technical backup to present to him before i turned us off.

  • 08.12.2007 2:16 PM PDT

Okay, comcast has community bandwidth, so the more users that subscribe to their service, the less bandwidth you get. The more things(computers, whatever) that you have using the bandwidth, the more lag you get. I didn't read the entire thing, but turning off the computer shouldn't help unless he is downloading something. And when I say it won't help, it shouldn't help significantly.
