Why should we except spam simply because it has always been apart of a given forum? The problem isn't so bad yet, as to forgo a reasonable solution.First page! w00t!!!
Like you say, the problem isn't that bad. Should "first post"-type posts be merely accepted because they are "tradition"? No, obviously not -- past rules by the moderators have made that clear, and spam is almost always more annoying than it is funny.
But merely blasting "first post"ers won't solve the problem.
There are still two issues that prevent the problem from being solved just by banning "first post"-type posts. First is the fact that there are a LOT of people who would continue to post "first post" even if you banned the six or seven people who did it last week because they simply don't know about the rule. Second is the problem that even if blacklistings had some kind of deterrent effect -- hell even if there was an automatic message under the "Click here for full story" link that said "'First post'-type posts will be grounds for blacklisting" -- you would still have a ton of people wanting to be the first to respond. So instead, they would respond with something like "hi" and then go back and read the article and edit in a response within a minute or two. Or else they would read through the article as quickly as humanly possible, pick something inane out and post that instead.
Either way, you're not going to find any intelligent discussion on the first one or two pages of the news article. People are simply not going to read carefully through the article and make intelligent posts just because of the threat of blacklisting. Instead, you should do what you already seem to do -- read the article and then respond. By the time you respond, the spammers have moved back to the Halo 3 Forum and the Flood, and the people who actually want to discuss the story are still around. You can usually find much better discussion on pages 3 and on in a news article, so why not just pay attention to those pages?
I disagree with people who say that it is allowable because it is "tradition," and I agree with you that spamming is unacceptable even in a news post. But I do not see how this is an urgent problem.
