Yeah, the thought of 'Marathon' within an advanced graphics engine would be cool, but I personally am looking for a continuation of the story, most importantly. And yeah, HALO/HALO 2 do remind me of 'Marathon' alot, too. But, I wouldn't call them a continuation. If you recall:

* In 'Marathon 2: Durandal' it says that the Humans and the S'Pht'Kr finally defeat the Pfhor on their homeworld at around 2800 AD. Which would mean that they'd been fighting along side the S'Pht, against the Pfhor up to that point, right?

* (correct me if I'm wrong, here-->) 'HALO' takes place chronologically after 'Marathon 2' does, but before 2800 AD. But there are no S'Pht, and no Pfhor.

But, that's what this thread's about. What you guys think about 'Marathon' and a revival. Thanks for the post, eMCee! ^ - ^

A Marathon revival. Worth a shot, I'd say.

Marathon can be downloaded for free! I think the sticky is still up, so go check it out if you're interested in playing.

According to Bungie, the plots are not connected, but hard headed fans such as myself refuse to acknowledges that fact out of sheer desperation for another installment in the series. You can read almost everything there is to know about the Marathon story right here. Although I suggest playing the game first, as it will be much more enjoyable.

If you really want to try and connect the games, I suggest looking at the numbers. Bungie's favorites are apparently 3 and 7. Interesting that the cyborgs of their stories are only numbered 4 through 6. =)

Very much so, there are many parallels (I tend to think they are in the same universe, but that's me)

And heck ya I'd be all over a revival..
What bungie should do is release the Halo1 engine, or Halo 2 engine or physics editors like they did with the Marathon series, and then have a dedicated fan group convert Marathon to the Halo engine.

It would be very possible with the Halo PC editing tools. People have done some pretty cool stuff with it, so I see no problem with a good Marathon mod. It would take some serious talent though. Making all of the enemies and completely reworking the levels is a lot of work, and can cost a lot of cash. The price for 3D Studio Max is incredible. Still, there are a few people with the time and resources to do it, but finding enough Marathon fans with the resources is the hard part.

I still have high hopes that some community members will get together and work on this project, but in the meantime, I'm hoping Bungie will at least give us some Marathon maps for Halo 2 for Christmas. Maybe even a Marathon weapon selection in the custom menu if we're extra good!

I would like to see some marathon maps ported to halo PC - in much the same way foundation is in halo 2. I wish I had 3D studio Max, and some skill in 3D modelling...

Sadly, the halo PC CE limits the map making to multiplayer maps only :(

Woah! I go away for a little more than 24 hours, and my thread's full of responses! It's really a rewarding feeling knowing that my thread is on-topic, and to see some really good, quality feedback! Nice to see some from eMCee and Smeeisqualityfoo again!

And though I'm repeating myself -> A 'Marathon' remake on a better engine would be amazing, and really fun to play. But, I personally, still, am mostly concerned about another installment in the 'Marathon' storyline. So, keep posting any sites related to 'Marathon'/'AlephOne', and keep telling me what the rest of you think about a 'Marathon' revival! Thanks a lot!

Have you had a look at Marathon Rampancy?

It is Marathon 1 ported to the Unreal Tournament engine.

http://www.planetunreal.com/rampancy/ I can't get to the site at the moment, but you might have more luck.

Hmmm.. I should download The Halo Editing Kit, I do have Forge and Anvil...
Does anyone know how to extract the Marathon map sources from the map file so they can be viewed in Forge?

Done.

Anyhow, as much as I'd like to see it, I doubt it'd work. Why? Thinking back to what Marathon was, the majority of it was reading the often mysterious messages scattered throughout the various levels of the three games.

These days, if it's not presented in fully voiceacted and animated cutscenes rife with special effects, there's no interest. Simply put; I think there's too much story in the Marathon series for the current average gamer to take interest in.

If you are talking about the marathon 2 and infinity maps, it just file>open in forge. Marathon 1 is more tricky, the level data will load but the texturing will be lost, as well as item and monster placement, doors and switches. You would be better off trying the m1a1 map file instead. also, you may need to tinker with the creator and type codes of the files first, so forge sees them as marathon 2 or infinity files.
