You should not have to talk about certain things for people to know you are Australian. Most people simply don't have enough experience to know the difference between some accents. I mean, to someone who has not heard many Australians talking, they may think that you are British. To the inexperienced ear, the two accents do sound alike. If you really want them to know where you are from, tell them. If during the game, they mistake you because of your accent, correct them if you want.

Freedom of Speech does not equal "Freedom from Consequences when one speaks".

It is a right, and all rights have responsibilities associated with them. Ignore the responsibility, and you tend to lose the right.

No. I ask them where their country is on the map. That usually sets the record straight.

Maybe YOU (not in a bad way) sound British?

  • 08.15.2007 11:32 AM PDT

i can honestly say i do not sound british.....brits have a very posh accent in case no one has noticed and their pronunciation is different for nearly every word.........and just because australians may be descendants of british convicts....it does not mean we sound british ourselves you idiot...

australians have created their own culture and their own right to be called australians.....not convicts

... because it DOES sound British, or, rather, they have a similar sound to them. Like New York accents and British accents, anyone can tell the difference, but they do have a SLIGHT similarity.
I lived in England for awhile, so I can tell the difference between Australia and Britian, but If you hadn't really heard the accents that much I could see how you could get confused.

Your also speaking over a headphone, that can garble your speech around abit.

For some people it is hard to tell the difference between accents. Most americans haven't been to England or Australia so they can not tell the difference and they are some what similar.

"Thoughts are the shadows of feelings; always darker, emptier, and simpler."

The Australian flag has a UK flag in it...

I can tell the difference.

American: Hot
Australian: Hodd

what are you talking about, america wasnt a place of exile, it was just were some people wanted to go, and it grew and grew, kinda like vegas in the middle of the dessert(why anyone would want to go there is besides me though)

Moo

I can tell the difference between East Coast, Southern, and Midwest accents, but I still couldn't tell you the difference between European and Australian.

LOL!

I can't tell because I don't hear the accents enough to be able to distinguish. On the other hand, American dialects sound totally different to me, but the real give away to me is word choice.

americans can be rude...wow. hasn't this topic been done to death in one form or another over the last couple of days. If you don't want people to mistaken your accent turn on voice masking...they'll mock that instead.
