Subject: The Bungie Podcast: 08/13/07

As the veil of lunacy descends, as past and future blend and shuffle, one image appears and flickers through the landscape, wraithlike. It is the Hatchling, the Newborn, walking the path of corruption, a lone figure shining in the toxic shadows. She comes dressed for war, and her wrath is terrible.

Is that music that you played in the break new?

I don't remember anything with percussion like that in the game...

I remember that being in Halo 2, at some parts. I think in some of the marine-heavy parts.

Wow! It's just fascinating hearing all these different members of the dev team talk about their experiences, trials and victories in the process of making this game. It's also fun to try and uncover stuff that hasn't been talked about yet.
Par example, at about 30:30 into the podcast, Luke talks about a co-op game with Sketch in which Sketch decides to "leave him dead and get mad points". I guess that one of the modifications you can make to so-op play will be making it so that downed players don't re-spawn but can be revived. Seems somewhat 'Gears'-esque. I like. I think having that option on would reduce the practice of sending a member of your party out as a sacrificial lamb to scout the enemies positions, because you'll have to go out after him.
There was more stuff in there that I noticed but it's freakin' 6am and I haven't slept yet so you guys'll have to post about 'em. 'yawn'

"Cotton thwaps him with the Gravity Hammer, Frankie flies through the air, blood splattering from his corpse, his head snapping back on the ceiling, leaving a bloody imprint on a light fixture and then his body skitters into a gravity lift and is boosted up into the Yellow room."
i love Bungie.

is the carbine pronounced "car-BYNE" or "car-BEAN" b/c i heard someone on the podcast pronounce it "car-BEAN" and frankly, that puts me in a state of distress. it bothers me almost as much as the fact that "konami" is pronounced "KOON-OM-EE"...... almost, but not quite.

it's pronounced "car-BEAN" like real rifles such as the M1 carbine and the M4 as well i believe.... sorry bro

also i enjoyed the podcast... missed frankie ;)

Hey I have a great idea fr your podcast next time.

Can you explaint the history or story behind the design on the Facemask of the Master Chief.

I see all of the models have them but his is particularly interesting for the fact it is the same shape we can find on the floors and walls of the Halo Installations.

Whether that trend continues in Halo 3 remains to be seen but nevertheles it is a topic I have been asking about for years.

See my link for a better and more clear view of the design in question.

http://www.inetrealtygroup.com/Halomysteryphotos.html

I really hope it isn't nothing because that would show that someone was lazy and reused a shape :)

You splattered a dumb cat

I really love the time breakdowns. That REALLY helps alot. When you listen multiple times like me, getting to a certain point in the podcast can be a pain sometimes.

Thanks, Smithy Luke!

That totally blows my freaking mind! I thought you were a total retard, Lady of Shalott, but it is me, in fact, who is the dumbass.
I had to go to Merriam-Webster and click on the little red speaker to confirm that I was right, but it turns out I've been mispronouncing it all my life. :(
It is car-BEAN! o_O
Wild, man, wild... I guess that's what one gets when ones entire vocabulary is gleaned purely from text and not from conversation with actual humans. :P

I digress. Great, podcast, guys! I love hearing the stories from the men behind the code. :) Rock on!

I have a question for your hilarious podcast:

Will Halo 3 support custom soundtracks?
I ask because in the Beta, the option was constantly "greyed out" and unavailable.

Also, if it is available, what is the best music you have found for Halo 3 multiplayer?

Thanks,
mxrider

That was a very interesting podcast.

Damian Isla > Dan Miller. PERIOD.

  • 08.17.2007 2:36 PM PDT

Despite Frankie's absence, this show actually went pretty well. Damian Isla's talk of AI programming was very intriguing (if somewhat cryptic! :O), and I'm glad to hear how the Scarab is turning out. Nice job, fellas!

Dear Bungie,

I don't have any friends, but if I did, I would surely tell them about your awesome podcast. Thanks for another great Podcast!

A lime a day keeps teh scurvy at bay.

Will we get any "sneak peeks" on the podcast about stuff from the bestiarum? Does it detail, for example, what elites breathe? Because Threshold seemed like a harsh environment, and while the Heretic Forces seemed prepared for that (dual tanks for the grunts, and visible oral gas expulsions from the elites seem to evidence this), the Covenant Forces seemed to handle it well. So, my question really is: do they just need atmosphere to breathe, be it benzene, nitrogen, oxygen, methane, or neon so long as it's SOMETHING; or, have I missed some core component of their battlesuits that isn't immediately identifiable? (To clarify: do Elites just need air of any kind to breathe, or is air of, like any kind to breathe [seems rather unlikely], or do the atmospheres of various worlds hold some gas in the atmosphere common to most places that elites can handle and we cannot? Actually, I'm not sure this clarified anything.)

Also, if the Arbiter has no cybernetic enhancements as Gravemind seems to imply, how did he use the zoom feature? How, in fact did he even have a HUD? These mysteries I realize are trivial, but they hound me in my sleep, and I need to know. Please. Plus, as he'll be in Halo 3, the question, trivial or no, still holds relevance. As far as my post goes.

Great Podcast.

Btw, why does it say "let these seven winds fill the sail" while the podcast is playing?

Oly Oly Oxen Free!

Yeah I'm with the other guy... Will the be custom soundtracks available for Halo 3? I know it might be a sioy question. But I wanted to know cause on some games they aren't and I wanted to know why they weren't available on the beta since all the demos on the xbox live marketplace have the option to play custom soundtracks. And the beta had it greyed out.

Frankie: "Master Chief's really green?!"

Color-Blindness is not a laughing matter.

Red vs. Blue? Why's it called that? All's I see is Blue peeps...and then those gray ones.

Ok I'm done...really.

I apologize Sir Frank, don't own me with some Aboriginal Killing Technique when you return from the Outback.

A witty signature you say ! ? well at the moment i have nothing witty that springs to mind, so sory..................nope still nothing.......

Another great pod cast guys. Amusing and interesting as always. Can’t wait to take on the scarab and see how the brutes use equipment in combat lol the bit when Damian Isla was describing that encounter with the brute and how it waited for his bubble shield to go down and them BAM! took him out with the fuel rod cannon lol . Really looking forward to the games relies and I had my legendary edition pre ordered quite some time ago, so it should be all good.

I'm sure that by now somebody has to have mentioned it, but perhaps in the event that Frankie won't be able to make the podcast, you can add a negatory in front of his name during the jingle. For example:

It's our pod-cast show
With Brian and Friends
... and (spoken) *NOT* Frankie.

Just a thought. The banter didn't seem quite as lively this week. Still a good episode and I'm glad everybody is having fun with it. The Red v. Green colorblind bit was funny.

One request, could you please include the names of the folks whose questions you decided to use. You used my question in this podcast and i thought that was my 15 seconds of fame... but nobody knew it was me :(
