Im getting a gaming rig, and my main concern right now is optical mice. I've had problems with Wireless mice and games before, and Im wondering whether the same thing applies to optical mice, ie, lag, occasional sticks. So anybody know whats the deal with them? Because im not going to buy it if it will affect my gaming.

Btw, I want to know if there are any hiccups with optical mice, cos im not spending a crapload of money on a gaming rig to have my mouce lag or stutter even slightly. Its annoying that there arent many cool looking wired and non-optical mice around, but if optical has no problems with gaming, I'm gonna get one.

i have one and i find them to be more responsive and they require virtually no cleaning. plus since there are no wheels or gears to worry about they are kind hard to wear out. so i say go for it

I use a Logitec optical Mouse, works great as long as you have a mouse pad, preferably single color. Shiny surfaces, wood grains, and sometimes too many designs in the surface can cause the mouse to jump. if your table or desk has a glass top, a mouse pad is a must. the glass will not reflect the laser, and you will get no movement.

Cool, yeah I have a plain old green mouse bad, so nothing to worry about there. Does anyone know how it performs with games? Specifically top end ones?

Definitely get an optical, but just don't get wireless, it's overrated, sure you can go "wireless" but you then can't when you have to recharge it, besides, wireless on a mouse and keyboard is just so unnecessary and adds to the price.

Im definately not going wireless, not because of money or recharging, but because in games that use a lot of memory the mouse lags and gets stuck, because it can't receive the data fast enough. Im wondering if similar things occur with opticals.

My question isn't 'are optical mice good mice', its 'do they have performance hiccups when playing high-end games?'.

I can say with confidence that the PC's RAM has nothing to do with the performance of a optical mouse.

Yeah i have and optical wireless, no hiccups no stutters and wroks great on my bed, legs, shirtless stomach, even on my dog( wanted to see if it would work). Although if you have a desk go with the cord. But since i dont an like to type and surf from across the room. I got my comp set up through my videocard to my High def. tv. I love it. With the wire it will act no differently than a reggular mouse, Especially for gaming. I found that after a long time with the wheel it starts to get stuck. Dude get with the program the wheel is so caveman. Were in the digital age.

...K. Well digital isn't necessarily an improvement, but yeah I'll get an optical.

"You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty." Gandhi

I have no problems with my optical mouse. It actually feels smoother than a wheel mouse.

Optical MIce don't have those problems, but I'd recommend getting a Razer ball mouse.

Some people dislike it for some reason, they think it's uncomfortable and too big, but the Razer Boomer Control has improved my performance in multiplayer FPS on the PC by about 60% - it really is that precise, and the profile is perfect for careful sniping or nigh-instantaneous maneuvers in close combat. No other mouse has 2100 dpi, closest optical is probably a high-end Logitech or another Razer, the Viper which has 1000 dpi.

Optical mice are great, although I wouldn't recommend the designed-for-games Intellimouse Explorer. It looks brilliant, but the mouse wheel is a -blam!-.

One tip: do not get a wireless mouse if you're wanting to game. Wireless mice aren't nearly as fast as the wireless controllers you buy (unless you're willing to spend a very hefty price on one) and they just don't seem too responsive.

My current mouse is a red Logitech 2x Optical Mouse. They're pretty cheap now. I think mine cost me about $25 or $35. It's much more precise than a mouse with a ball. I've never had my mouse stick.

On another note, I wouldn't suggest a wireless keyboard, either. If you're really big into gaming, you'll want wires.

An optical mouse might not be right for you. You said if it affects your gaming, you don't want one. An optical mouse will effect your gaming. That is to say, your gaming will be much more enjoyable. :)

Edit: Here's the mouse I use. It's old, but great. Here

This is the mouse I want to get: Here

Computer Gaming World featured a new mouse that's supposed to be the best gaming mouse ever. I don't remember the name or price of it, though.
