I love the idea

i was part of a forum at kings of chaos and we had post counts and what else was cool was that you cuold use custom avarts.

i would like it if we could use our own custom avarts

The problem with custom avatars is that people will take it out of hand. The first thing you would see is some image of necropyrobeastophilia because someone wants that image. Then, more restrictions would have to be set up to make sure that doesn't happen again. In order to make sure it doesn't happen, each avatar would have to be examined by Bungie employees to make sure it is safe for everyone alike... would would take weeks or more likely months. By the time your avatar is accepted, you may want another one or you might have already forgotten about it.

As far as the post counter... I like the idea, but I don't really see the need for it. I, as well as many others, believe in the quality of posts rather than the quantity of them. Either way, despite the fact it may seem like a good idea, I just have a feeling it won't work.

Custom Avatars: No, for the reason explained above of people putting inappropriate things on their avatar.

Post Count: No, and never again. It was already in existence, and then it became an ego booster. People would post for the sole purpose of increasing their post count, and looking ultra cool.

You might try being polite in future. "I want a post count" comes across as a rather selfish gesture.

And read above posts. There is no post count because members start posting and spamming to increase their count, amongst said other reasons.

Quality, not quantity. At least that's what my ex kept telling me ;-)

All this falls under here.

All those ideas can be used under Invision Power Board. I just wish we had a search feature and a post count.

Post Count: Not going to happen.

Search Feature: Eventually.

IPB would die under the strain of the traffic that b.net gets. MySQL just isn't up to it. Don't believe me? Ask the expert, Achronos, who said this last time someone suggested a PHP alternative.

Actually, IPB supports Oracle and Windows SQL.

But then again, having forums in PHP would mean having the site redone. And of course, everything would be a lot slower around here due to what IPB has to do.

The line between adding a post count and adding a spam generation bot is very thin.

I'll second that. It would pretty much turn B-net into a rank-whore's society, instead of having to gain respect and recongnition by what you post.

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

IPB is not meant for boards of this size. New Mombasa alone has about 650,000 posts. The other public forums are also large, several past half a million. And that doesn't even take into account the several thousand smaller forums in the groups. We're quite happy with Ideal, and with our ASP.NET infrastructure.

Regarding your requests:

1. There will NEVER be a post count. The initial enabling of it was done in error, it wasn't meant to be ever turned on.
2. Custom avatars will never happen for everybody. They will continue to be used to identify special people (Bungie employees and mods), as well as those who win contests or do something of merit.

I'll vote the motion.

If we measured worthiness by volume, then McDonald's would be a 5-star restaurant. McD's is many things (many of them good, many not so) but it's NOT a 5-star restaurant.

Post count makes people confuse volume with worth. It's absurdly easy to crank out a couple-thousand one-line posts that add NOTHING to the community yet pad the post count to epic proportions in little time.

If you want a guide as to who's a veteran of the forums, use the "Join Date". (Though that in itself isn't enough either... but at least it doesn't encourage spam.) If you want to know who's worth reading, well, you gotta read the posts yourself and make up your own mind.

-- Steve thinks that adding a post count would create far more problems than it would solve.
