Check out the front page of msn.com and look at the featured video. It's really cool. They are actually going to BAN smoking on a beach in California. And then other beaches are expected to follow.

How does everyone else feel about this? I think it's great! It's a wise decision for the environmment, non-smokers... and it's for smoker's own good! You should listen to them complaining about the new law. They don't even care about the harm they are causing around them. Just that they get to smoke their cigarette. But very soon they will be charged a fine of $250 if they are caught smoking on the beach. I think this is a wonderfully, large step in the right direction!

Now we just need smoking to be banned period!...

cheers,

On a beach, there's little chance of non-smokers being affected by passive smoking, so it seems stupid. They should instead ban smoking in public buildings.

Ah, I see you didn't watch the video. Well it's actually a very smart move. First of all, wht do you think smokers do after they are done with a cigarette? Well, as you might have guessed, they throw them on the beach. And if there are a bunch of smokers... smoking on the beach every day... then ground pollution becomes an issue. They show one lady saying her two year old is at a point he doesn't know what to stick in his mouth or not. The idea of a kid picking one up and sticking it in their sounds pretty gross... and can probably make him sick. Also, you actually hear some people complaining about the second hand smoke. Not only that, its bad for the environment, and not to mention tourist attraction.

Yup, that is one of the main reasons for the ban. Not only that, there are actually non-smoking people in the video who complain about how second hand smoke IS a problem there.

Smoking isn't as bad for the environment as, say, cars, but I don't see people wanting to ban those.
I too hate smoking, but people do have a right to smoke. As long as its not in a building with me I'm happy. And cigarette butts break down anyway - cans on the beach are a bigger problem.

Ciggarette butts dont break down that fast, in fact its pretty slow, im not sure exactly how long it takes, but its obviously causing a problem if they're banning it. There doing it on some Australian beaches as well, for the reason of discarded butts.

But smoking is just plain pointless. It does all harm and no good. Though I'm sure you can see the point in cars. However, I can't wait until electric and/or solar cars become more availabe. We should help the environment as much as we can.

Also, don't I have the right to smoke-free air? I can't go inside many public places without having to encounter it. I shouldn't have to deal with it ever! I shouldn't have to deal with THEIR problem making it my problem.

As for the butts, even if they did break down fast, that doesn't stop the new ones happening right after that the very next day every day, and by many smokers who smoke many cigarettes every day.

Cars are pointless when you consider that we have public transport, such as buses and trains (and taxis even). And I've already said that smoking should be banned in public buildings.

I mean they smoke right at the door before you enter a public place. That to me is irritating.

Also, that idea you brought up about transportation, it isn't pointless. People should be able to leave their houses when they need to and not have to worry about catching a train or bus. Or missing it for that matter. That idea might be good for a large city like New York, but not in small towns.

If money were invested in good public transport, then why would you need to use a car? And you could just hire a taxi if you were that worried.

I hope you're not a tree hugger, lol. I don't like people who care about the earth (period) more than people. Smoking is dumb and should just be banned altogether (except for those addicted). It just makes some money and kills people. I guess the government cares more about money though. O and then the family has to pay for a funeral which boosts the economy even more! That may not be their (government) goal but it seems like that.

Aww man I voted the wrong thing, I DO like the idea. My aunt is deathly allergic to cigarrets, even being in the same building gives her and asthma attack, it's scary.

Cigarette butts don't break down at the beach. Pure sand isn't a good decomposer. Soil contains bacteria that assists in the decomposition of organic matter, but beach sand doesn't have that.

Cigarette butts really annoy me at the beach. It ruins the whole beach atmosphere. They've already banned them in Sydney, I think.

i don't smoke (besides the point that i'm 14). but i have been exposed to enough second hand smoke to equal pretty close a single pack. this keeps up i'm gonna start having some serious breathing problems.

and have you ever wondered what is in cigarettes? amonia. which is also in dog poop. and a cleaner. cigarettes contain traces of uranium. ever heard of chyrnobyl?

Somking in public places and buildings is banned where I live and it rocks!!! Also I can understand not wanting to turn the beach into one giant ash tray. The only place people should be allowed to smoke is on their own private property.

I agree, keep that trash at home.

Sorry Goweb, Smoking is terrible, and as a human being, I have the right to not be poluted while enjoying the outdoors. Smoking has been proven to do nothing benificial for society, and actually kills people. Cigarette butts on the beach do not decompose very well. And i know this is a generality, but most smokers are used to littering, and littering is against the law. How many times have you seen some butt wipe smoker toss his cigarette butt out of a moving car? At least once a day? Yes, cans on the beach is a problem too, and in my opinion the littering fines should be more strictly enforced, we just don't have the man power to do so.

Banning smoking on the beach is a good idea. hell, banning smoking in ANY public place is a good idea, all the smokers should have to go to enclosed rooms and smoke together...lol.
