I'm pretty sure it's a fallback for when the game engine cannot fully account for how a player died, and can involve any moveable or blowuppable 'thing' within the game environment, including the guardians. I think you would get a classified kill when you have dealt a player 'some' amount of damage (not enough to kill) then they, in turn get knobbled by the train, stalagtites, fusion core, fall off map etc..... The engine has to be able to give the kill to someone, but it will show as classified because it isn't totally sure about the use of weaponry.
