Subject: Halo on an Xbox 360, issue with 720p 16:9 widescreen support after ...

I just decided to play some Halo: CE on my Xbox 360 and I was about to start the campaign when I realized that I should probably connect to Xbox Live to see if it may have been updated. So, I go back to the dashboard and connect to Xbox Live. It then prompts me to download an update for it and then when it's done and I load the game it's f****ing letterboxed now. So what the hell happened and how can I put it back to being in widescreen 720p like it was before I updated it?

I'm not sure if you can actually play the game on 720p on 16:9 without stretching the picture automatically. I have yet to hear from someone that actually got it to work even though Bungie said in a story that it can display on 720p on 16:9 on the XBOX 360. The graphics are upscaled though...

Me neither. It's really annoying.

Seems everyone could play in full 16:9 before they apply the update, with their box set on 720p. Here's what I think happened - before the update, it did not support 720p, and we were actually playing it in 480p (which the game did support) stretched to widescreen despite our display settings. Then the update came, allowing us to play in 720p but only in 4:3. This I think makes a lot more sense than putting out an update that would actually downgrade the functionality! I'm not entirely sure, but I think it may have something to do with the fact Halo 1 didn't have widescreen support. When you play it on 480p in 16:9 you can see it's stretched.

I wish they'd fix it though. It is pretty much THE definitive xbox game and it launched the xbox brand. You'd think they'd let us enjoy it in all it's glory...

What I don't understand is why it was seemingly in 720p 16:9 before I decided to see if there was an update and then updated it. I found a way to make it be in widescreen (changing my display setting to 480p in the dashboard) but it doesn't seem as crisp as it was before I updated it which makes me wonder if it was in 720p with a 16:9 ratio before I updated it. I really wish I had just started playing instead of signing into live and downloading the update.

Yeah, it's really weird. It seems that everything was fine before the update but now I don't know. I wish someone knew the answer to all of this. Now I don't know if I should play with it letterboxed or in 480p stretched to 16:9. This really sucks.
