Just wondering if the Servers that support Halo2 will be shutdown after the release of Halo3 or if they will stay operational for some time to come. Reason being is that I don't yet have a 360 and am wanting to wait until the 45 nano second 360 comes out, hopefully, in late 2008 early 2009. That and wanting to wait until all the kinks are ironed out with the current 360. (Red circle of death, 90 nano second chips causing system to over heat, over sized power supply, noisy fan, noise dvd drive). Hopefully it will be a situation where the Halo2 Servers will stay operational well into 2008 so that original Xbox console owners are not forced to shell out 400 bucks to continue to enjoy Halo playing. Thanks.

as long as there is a large enough demand they'll keep it going but i dont know if i want to wait ten mins for a game of swat?.

what "servers?" The matchmaking system relies on users to be host.

And the 65ns chips are already shipping out of china. they should be here in the next couple weeks.

I'm sure that they're not going to be like EA and shut down their game servers before the online players are finished playing.

Also, Sphincter218, Bungie's hosting the servers for the stats, ranks, and game data. There may also be a central server that matchmaking relies on.

The game is on Xbox Live. Until the service goes down, we'll still be playing.

its not nanosecond, its nanometers, as in the distance between the transistors on the chip. This is significant because the more transistors per chip, the more calculations it is able to do per clock cycle. so the 65nm chip such as the core 2 duo is capable of doing more calculations at the same speed as the 90nm pentiums. nanosecond is 1 billionth of a second, modern transistors operate at speeds approaching 1 calc per picosecond. Therefore if a chip ran at 65nanoseconds it would be pretty slow. And now you know about processors, and the meaning behind the number.

Halo 2 doesn't really have the big dedicated servers - the game basically just detects which player in the party has the best connection quality and then designates them as host for the game. Therefore, since players are more localized, people who play Halo 2 XBL can keep on playing until the service is shut down, in theory.

So no, Original Xbox users won't have the door slammed in their faces as far as conventional Halo online play goes, unless the service is somehow damaged or removed.

TPG is garbage!

If the service is stopped its stopped. I don't think it will though. Halo 2 will still be very popular (especially amongst the xbox owners). If you don't have a 360 then you need to get one for the release of Halo 3 'cause if you don't, you'll be missing out on a lot.

I appreciate everyone's input, especially in the chip lesson that it's nanometeres (distance) and not nanosecond (time). Good to hear that whatever is out there that makes it all click should still be around well into 2008. And yes I know the 65 nm Falcon chip sets are on their way, check the lot number before you buy, but if you do some digging in the news you will find out that the same chip mfg has plans to produce a 45 nm chipset. With all the kinks that need to be ironed out, and the fact that I can hold out for the 45 nm chipset if I know it's in the pipeline, I'm gonna hold out and wait until I get a 360 until the end of 2008. I know I'm missing a lot, but at the same time 400 bucks is 400 bucks and would rather only shell it out once. Plus not sure if ya'll have seen bug Big Huge Games has hired a retired programmer, forgot his name, and they are supposed to produce a big huge massive role playing game due to come out in early 2009. So I think for 2008 I'm gonna slide by, then make the leap to a hopefully flawless 360 in early 2009. Thanks again for everyones input, it's always appreciated. Rusty

Dude! My Hero! Tell me more? I have been trying to find info about this for a while but only dead ends. Is this the 360 "falcon?" How much cooler should they run? Are they gonna put the power supply in the box? So many questions! Any links etc. would rock!

A tosser is the same as a wanker. To toss oneself off is to fondle the trouser weasel.

Why not just buy a 360 right now? You get full warranty and believe me when playing a game the Xbox 360's noise is minimal. Your reasons for not buying an Xbox 360 right now and waiting almost two years to get one are not enough.

New World....You just gotta do some google searching. Simply search for 360 60 nm or 360 falcon and you should get some hits you can follow. Based on what I was reading they are starting in the pipeline, but will still take a couple months before you see um out there. Biggest thing is to check the Lot #, unfortunally I don't know the Lot # for the Falcon chip set, so you'll have to do some digging. As far as running cooler, I would presume so, but how much I don't know. Power supply is still on outside, but quiet possible that DVD player has been upgraded.
Yuke.....I don't have the chance to play all the time. And I don't have a high def tv. So for me knowing that there is a 45 nm 360 in the far off pipeline which I hope when finally produced would be a more fine tuned version than that 90 nm version that is out on the street now. That for me is enough to wait. Of course if they came back and said that the 60 nm coming out soon is it and there will be no more upgrades, well than yes I can see that as a reason to go out and get it in the next couple of months. But again for me, if the 45 nm is out there in the future, I'm gonna wait for it. To each his own. :-)

Is there any way current 360 owners could upgrade? My xbox just seems a few dozen sessions away from another RoD.
