I hope this is the right forum. If not, I apologize.

I upgraded yesterday from a DSL connection to a cable modem (Roadrunner.) The speed of my connection is 10 down, 1 up. It's much faster than my DSL connection was. I tried downloading a couple TV shows over XBL, and that went incredibly fast.

However, when I play Halo 2, the connection is terrible! Huge amounts of lag, and the whole game stops to "reconnect" multiple times during a 10 minute match. I know the servers "learn" about your connection somehow and remember it, so I played for about an hour yesterday, hoping it would get better. It didn't. My connection ranged from all the way green, to yellow, to red at different points during the matches.

I never had any problems with lag when I used DSL. I'm using the same router as before, but instead of using a wireless ethernet device on my 360, I have hard wired an ethernet cable from my Xbox 360 to the router. Theoretically, my connection should be better, not worse. Does anyone have any ideas? Is anyone from Bungie reading this?

Thanks for any info!

Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get... but you can bet it will be chocolate.

If your playing halo 2 on live make sure no one is on aim or myspace. And if someone is downloading something... that would certainly be a reason for your lag. Plus... mabye you just got unlucky.

Freedom of Speech does not equal "Freedom from Consequences when one speaks".

It is a right, and all rights have responsibilities associated with them. Ignore the responsibility, and you tend to lose the right.
Recon Number 54

Your problem is not associated with upload/download speed. It's most likely a problem with latency. Your DSL line may have given you better numbers than your new cable line. Go here and test your connection. What you're looking for is Round Trip Time and Max Pause. RTTs should be no more than around 90ms, although most cable broadband tests out around 40-65ms. Max Pause shouldn't be much higher than that, although if it's 125-150ms things should work "OK".

I'm working with the same issues with my BellSouth/AT&T DSL, and just upgraded to their Extreme service this morning to see if it improves. My Max Pause is frequently as high as 1500ms.

I've had friends with DSL and they say it sucks, my cable works fine all the time. Before I moved into my appartment, and was living at my parents house, we had 3 Xboxs on live at once, not to mention my youngest brother playing some game online on his computer, pluse 3 computers in the house running online, and it would only lag once in awhile, that was with cable as well. Maybe what you can do, we had to do this, call the provider and tell them you want to up your bandwidth, they put ours at the max, and it was like 10 extra bucks a month.

My problem is that matchmaking works like garbage. Most of the time I have to sign in and out just to play one matchmaking game. It gets matched players and then just freezes up. My connection works great in a party most of the time.

If your on a 360 you also need to check out the NAT settings. Run a connection test and one of the last tests is the NAT settings. If your router or cable company has you set to strict then you will find alot of problems with Halo.

Read this link, it is important.

Thanks to everyone for their help. As it turned out, my modem, a Motorola SB5120, was not compatible with Xbox Live. Xbox tech support suggested I ask for an SB5100, the older model, which is on Microsoft's approved modem list. My cable company didn't have a 5100, but they gave me an RCA modem, which so far seems to work well.

See you online, and sorry to everyone who played with me in matchmaking while my connection was bad!

That's bull-blam!-. Because I have a 5120 and they said it was fine and compatible about 2 weeks ago. Not to mention that I work for my ISP and that is the modem that we use in our network and no one has ever had an issue. And I just about made the tech woman cry because she had no clue what she was talking about. I asked for a supervisor and she flipped out.
