Subject: What should be kept, and lost, for the Halo series..

This is a simple, honest thread, from the point of view of a Halo lover...

Things to be kept...
Dual weilding
Boarding
All of the weapons (getting rid of weapons makes to many people angry)
The absolutely amazing story line...

Things to be dropped...
Instant kill zones
Bosses
tight maps (Halo 1 was wide open and beautiful)
Streaming Cinematics (While an amazing technolgy, id rather wait a bit for picture perfect cinematics)
The Arbiter (I know this is going to be a controversal topic, so i will explain my reasoing for this below)

I feel that everything mentioned is relativley self explainatory, and that many people will agree with the above things; except, perhaps, for the Arbiter. Heres the thing, Halo 1, 3 Books, and countless web sites, have taught me to hate the covenant. The Covies main goal seems to be the complete destruction of the Human Race, and the Arbiter, who is one of the covenants most decorated heros, has killed millions of humans and glassed countless human worlds. All the sudden though im supposed to feel sympathetic towards him because he and his people were deceived? Not a chance!! The covenant has taken this war way to far, and it can only end in the complete destruction of one of the races. The Arbiter needs to die, he is to much of a threat, as a matter of fact, the only reason i enjoyed playing him at all is do to the fact that he was killing his own kind...The Master Cheif is one of the most intresting and well rounded video game characters to have ever been conceived, i think i speak for just about everyone when i say i want to find out much more about John 117....

There are many more things that i feel should be left into, or taken out of, the next Halo game, but i suppose these are the most obvious. Please add onto the list, but keep it sensible.

Pretty much the only part of that which I would agree with is "bosses". I hate bosses with a passion.

Bosses are cool, but only when they are used more than once, and often, but they also must be done well.

  • 11.29.2004 3:40 PM PDT

I agree with this, and it is why i feel they dont fit into the Halo universe..The beauty of Halo 1 was that it was a super scifi, yet amazingly relastic, military fps. It felt like i was in an actual war, there arent any bosses in the real world, and if there are (say dictators and the such), they dont have magical powers, and they die jus as easily as everyone else.

streaming cinematics are great. they're the reason you dont have to load cinematics. but i have to agree, bungie should get rid of bosses and maybe the Arbiter

  • 11.29.2004 3:48 PM PDT

I loved them at first, but after so many people complained, and after getting a little tired of the glitches myself, i began to thing that a little bit of loading might not be so bad.

I loved that there weren't any bosses in Halo 1 cause im pretty sukky when it comes to most of them, but i still felt that Halo needed a few bosses. If u think the way i do, all the covenant is one giant boss. And about the Arbiter... i didn't mind him at all mainly for his camo ability^^ it helped me against the flood (i know that im one of the rare people who have trouble and has the hardest time against flood >.>). But u got to use the sword more w/ the arbiter than with the chief. But they kinda ruined halo 2 at the end, if u think about, because elites and humans worked together, is it just me? or aren't they supposed to kill eachother... this is way way off topic but... does any1 know if i can accept a person into my clan from the site? and how? email me at egamerdrew@yahoo.com

FOOLS the ELITES ARE THE COOLIST RACE OF HALO and the Arbiter is way cooler then MC but they could have made his armor a little cooler.

Agreed, Elites are awsome cause they get all the kick arss weapons, but the chief is near the same for me cause i usually use covenant weps with him anyways^^ . But i like to stay in between...

  • 11.29.2004 5:14 PM PDT

The elites are cool alright, but id rather kill them than be them..

The Arbiter was essential to the storyline because, as we can speculate, he is a very influencial and powerful member of the Elites, and also one who sees the truth about Halo. Now, it seems as if the Elites have betrayed the Covenant and perhaps the Arbiter will spread the word of Halo's true intent to the other Elites. Perhaps an alliance will be formed between Elites and Humans in order to stop the Covenant from detonating Halo. The Arbiter might not be the perfect hero for Halo, but in order for the story to have gone like it did, the Arbiter needed to be there, and now he must continue.

  • 11.29.2004 8:10 PM PDT

I absolutley agree, however, none of this erases his past... Any current peace between him and humans should be severed immeadiatley. I am aware of the fact that an alliance between humans and the covenant is possible, but i would feel so amazingingly betrayed that i would immeadiatley vow to never play Halo again...then i would die from not playing Halo. I beleive that in the next Halo, whenever it may come out, that the arbiters story will continue, and that he should fuel the civil war, but that ultimately the Master Cheif should dispose of him.

i like playing as the arbiter, it lets you see his side of the story. although i will miss killing the elites with the butt of my weapon. i disliked the bosses. halo 2 didn't seem as realistic as in halo 1 in the later levels.a brute thats a bit stronger might seem normal, or a brute that has more expiearience like tartarus, without the shield.

There weren't a lot of open maps in Halo 2, but there weren't enough tight maps in Halo 1. They need to strike a balance.

The streaming cinematics work fine if you don't have loads of crap on your box.

I didn't run into any instakill zones during the course of the game, found plenty of those in HalfLife, but none in Halo/2.

The Arbiter sequences bring a whole new dimension to the realm of Halo storytelling, I think it was a worthwhile addition.

And in conclusion bosses were done well in Halo 2 since there were only a few. Bosses help the story by providing rising action.

The kill zones arent normal things you would run into, but if you go exploring as many people do you will likely find them. Again, i agree with the arbiter thing, but now that thats done and weve learned all we can from his point of view, its time to say good bye to him. The bosses of Halo 2 were done better than most other bosses, and arent much of a bother on lower levels, but on higher levels they are time consumers. I cant figure out how bosses are immune to high velocity projectiles and super heated plasma swords.

I can not believe that you say that the arbiter is way cooler then MC then your truly not a good halo fan ......... Its a Sad, sad day when some one says that

  • 11.29.2004 10:14 PM PDT

Plasma backpack anyone?

I must ask- What do you mean by taking out the bosses? I don't really recall fighting many. All I remember are Tartarus and one of the Prophets and oh yes, that Heretic dude... I think more bosses would be welcome.

As far as being taught to hate the Covenant, it's understandable but at the same time, I do sympathize with the Arbiter. After going through Halo 1 & 2 on Legendary, amassing many, many hours playing these great games, I must say, I definitely feel for the Elites. Not the whole Covenant race but just the Elites. The Grunts are too weak, the Jackals are fickle without their shields, the Brutes are just that, the Drones are lame &... ok, ok, the Hunters gt a little sympathy from me as well. Why, I don't know...

I think it is really cool that the humans & The Covenant are somehow linked, who knows maybe even descenants of one another or vice-versa... Interesting that the "Arc" has come into play...

It certainly didn't ruin the game, but it did take away some of the enjoyment for me. I'd like to see a boss in the form of a whole lot of enemies, not as one super powerful entity.

I Agree I did not like the bosses at all, and the oen big thign I loved about Halo 1 is that it didn't have any bosses.

About the Arbiter, I loved how you get to play him. I havn't read the books, and all so I guess I dunno the full side of the Elites, but I like the Elites... and yes I like playing the Arbiter more the MC. Which is one of the reason im an Elite Online, and not a Spartan.

Guys, There werent so many bosses in HALO 2. Just this prophet guy and the other one. Just 2 bosses. (and they are not even bosses, they just stronger and take more time to kill). Like hunters. I didnt mind that. I dont even see them as bosses.
The thing that pissed me off was that we were promised a lot of action On the EARTH and there were only few levels on earth. I hated that. They cutted the game in half. All the action is in halo 3. That sucks. I was expecting much more of HALO 2.
IT WAS A DISSAPOINMENT BUNGIE!!!!!!!!!!

The addition of the Arbiter was a very nice step for the Halo storyline. Twists, turns, and surprises are essential to maintain good drama. However, I feel that Bungie should have used the one Prophets words to the Arbiter as foreshadowing, when he said it was a suicide mission. They should have killed off the Arbiter at the end, like maybe the Chief runs into the same room as him and his instincts react and take him down with a sniper rifle. If the Arbiter had been killed off it would of alleviated the groans from most of the Halo fans, but they left him in there, so we just got to live with it.

I firmly believe that you have to kill off a few main characters to make the action more edgy, yes they killed of Keyes in the first Halo game, but no main character was killed off in Halo 2, the Arbiter would have been the best choice to kill off.
