Sorry people, I think the conversation is good (aside random flame posts which will remain unnamed). SO I would like to continue it in a new thread if possible, rather then have to go through 16 pages (despite the icon which lets me skip to the last one I know), and maybe make this one devoid of any flaming.

Now I would like to bring props to Doom Sticks, Neophoebus, and CPO Raven, I liked some of the ideas that were coming out of them especially. In fact someone made me consider something new; what if Dr. Halsey wasn't after the Spartan 3s (assuming their existence)? Dr. Halsey studied the Flood a bit from the data she could gather, and even gathered information on a resistance to it; Sgt. Johnson's blood and nervous system structure. As a result, Sgt. Johnson now has a higher regenerative rate (Healing prowess we have yet to see). Dr. Halsey wants to save the lives of many, right? What better way to save the lives but by integrating a new healing system right into the blood of a person?? Maybe she's looking for live flood infection specimens (assuming another Halo in existence) so that she can use it's cellular structure to bond with humans and give all people a regenerative power?

Just a thought. Additionally, Doom Sticks brings up a good Point in the idea of Spartan-I. Maybe those WERENT in fact the Spartans of Greece. Not ruling out that it could be, but it's never definitively said that they WERE the Spartans of Greece, so its possible there were subjects before them. And again; who said that they were a failure? If they were top secret, they wouldn't be discussed.

Also someone mentioned how CPO Mendez would be about 70, and too old to train the New Spartan Groups. A good point, but think of life expectancy and its increasing rate. People now can live to be a bit under a hundred, and thats expected to increase exponentially with all the advancements in technology. By 2552 (Again, it's not stated to be 2552 AD!!), 70 might not be that old at all.

Thats all.

thanks for thinking about putting it all in one neat post.
I like the whole Regeneration theory. That sounds good, Halsey might go looking for another HALO...
I said earlier about the spartans mating..that still sounds like a possibility to me. even though they have decreased sex drive. I still stand by it. though decreased...but not gone!

I don't know about them mating or not, but I wouldn't eliminate the possibility. When it discussed Decreased Sex Drives, it also mentioned that this was a POSSIBLE side effect, not a definite one. Meaning it's possible that they weren't effected at all in this little problem of impotency.

I still think the best theories lie with Hasley getting the Spartan-3's or the Mjornir VI (spelling?) armor. I still cant get over how good the novels are.

I really dont think she went to go study The Flood. I know she took Kelly with her but The Flood was hard enough when it was just MC. Not only would Kelly have to protect herself, but she would also have to protect Dr. Halsey if something were to happen. I just dont see that being likely. I still think she went to get the Spartan 3's (assuming they exsist).

NEW IDEA
Dr. Halsey let MC and the other Spartans go to Earth to help protect it, thats why she only took Kelly (or maybe for some other reason). Now, what if they did go to see the Spartan 3's and she took them (or they were already on) another Halo installation. Now, if she wanted to study The Flood, it would make more sense if she had other Spartans (S3) there to protect her and maybe test some stuff out.

I dont know, maybe not. Since it seems like both could happen, it would make more sense if she did both like that.

What do you think?

i dont think the dr went somewhere where she wouldnt need the help of kelly. why else would she have taken her if not for protection or to be a trainer for Spartan 3's.

new idee i was just playing the maw over and was thinking the ship the chief escaped in doesn't travel far because it does not have the power to reach earth (first strike). So if we know what kind of ship the dos took we can calculate where she went. if we have some sort of idee what there is in the range the ship can travel.

I think that I should start reading the Halo books. You guys post very interesting theories indeed. Unfortunately I cannot comment on them.
For the mating part. I think that it is impossible for the Spartans to have offspring. First of all, it would be difficult to get a Spartan to "mate" and secondly, supposing the Spartan did have -blam!- intercourse, the offspring would be most likely be mentally retarded or physically damaged. This would be a result of the alternated Genes in the Spartans. I don't know how familiar everybody is with genes, but there might be quite weird combinations, leading to such mental deficits. Another thing, how would the child grow up?

Sorry if I'm going off topic, but this is quite interesting to ponder about.

Cool Regenerative Theory Spartan 004!!! I almost thought of something like that but that was pretty cool.

Just to make sure we keep the convo on new sparta going; it is 2552 AD because there is a reference somewhere that these dates are "old military calendar" (implying i guess that there is some other/new calendar in the future). while this doesn't prove my point i think it's rather obvious. And yeah who knows about Spartan 1's? But I think it's safe to say they all perished (or almost all). Dr.Halsey struggled so much internaly when recruiting the kids for the spartan 2 program and it seems like the augments were ver cutting edge (i.e. very dangerous) that I'd count that the Spartan 1's were a failure.

Now the recruitment of kids leads me to why the mating of Spartans is just some -blam!- repression that you guys have and are venting out through these Halo discussions (do any of you, and you know who you are, have girlfriends?). The kids (John) were selected because of their DNA and aptitude's compatibility with the Spartan program (then throughout puberty they were artificially augmented). Now we all know that -blam!- reproduction takes half the genes from one being and another half from another and voila a new baby being is born. The only problem is that there is no guarantee which genes get put into the respective contributing halves.

If you want baby Spartans then go write a UNSC Soap Opera. If you want new Spartans then stick to the program (uhh...pun??).

No. It says that-that particular Longsword doesnt have the slipspace drive. I think other Longswords do, just that certain one didnt. Ummm......I think some Pelicans have it to. It seems likely she took on of those, and both are slipspace capable.

ok does any one know how far such a ship can travel so we cn start calculating? The point i am trying to make is that if we know where she went we can calculate the change of spartans in that area.

An army of sheep led by a lion would defeat an army of lions led by a sheep.

Uh... okay the books are pretty integral to these discussions... so if you haven't read them then maybe doing a little research on the threads are in order.

Pelicans and Longswords are not equipped with Shaw-Fujikawa slipspace drives... Dr Halsey left with Kelly at the end of First Strike on an old ONI spacecraft called a Chiroptera, the smallest UNSC ship ever to be fitted with a Shaw-Fujikawa drive. This means that she could be absolutely anywhere! It was said that her exit vector was towards no known system.

Driven to distraction. ^_^

OK, here's a new angle on the discussion.

Just before Dr. Halsey left left with Kelly she was contemplating what she had done in her past and what she was about to do. She was thinking how previously she had been willing to sacrifice a few people for the good of the many, but now she was going to save individuals. She was thinking that she was going to start by saving Linda, then Kelly and then a few other important individuals. To save these individuals she would need to betray everyone who trusted her.

Who were these other important individuals? There are two ways of looking at this.
1. They were the crew of the Ascendant Justice (Spartans, Whitcomb, Haverson etc.), saving them by giving the crystal to Locklear and assuming he would destroy it (allowing them free slipspace passage). I can't see how this is a betrayal.
2. She was refering to other individuals, and she would need to leave the Ascendant Justice and kidnap Kelly to save them.

For me, the answer is probably 2.

Also, Dr. Halsey was in a rush, acting within a limited timeframe before earth is destroyed and humanity is wiped out. For me, this would mean that training a new set of Spartans is almost pointless (considering there would be nothing to save). I doubt she would have any already trained Spartan 3's either. I'm sure it was mentioned somewhere that she wouldn't want to put a group of Kids through that again.

Sorry for being long but I think its a valid argument.

sorry if this has been mentioned...but..it seems pretty obvious to me that, considering the posiblity of spartan 1s not being the spartans of legend...that CPO Mendez...might just be a spartan 1...so even if he IS old, if hes a spartan...then would it even matter? sorry again if this has been brought up...

this brings to mind how the flood can be released in Halo2 (there is 4 maybe more but 4 for sure halo rings each has flood on them, becuase that is there purpose.) so its vary posible that Dr. Halsey in her quest to make humans more resiliant, trys to get a live flood infector to study but ends up releasing them once again.

Well, though the game/books take place in 2552 (and surrounding times), that does not mean all diseases have been taken care of. If you notice, good ol' Sarge Johnson was diagnosed with 'Boren's Syndrome.' He has (had? It never stated if he had been rid of the) brain tumors.

This leads me to believe that the cure for cancer hadn't been found yet. As people got closer (and farther, I suppose) to the sun (and equally large stars), doesn't that mean they would most likely get certain types of skin cancer that could spread to other parts of the body?

Wow. I have no idea where I was going with that.

Anyway, I don't think she went to find the Flood. If she had, she'd have tried to bring more than one Spartan. Kelly, alone, could not do what the Master Chief did. That's not to say she's not as strong in any sense, but the Master Chief obviously has his strong points.

One thing that confuses me is how the books somehow keep a time table. Is this set on a 24 hour table? Are they keeping the same time as they did on Earth? I have yet to realize how, exactly, they're keeping dates.

If the artifact they found on Reach had anything to do with time in Slipspace (as it does, obviously), then wouldn't that mean someone would age faster? Now I'm just confused. :(
