Any router will work for the 360 as long as it has RJ-45 ports.

Linksys has, in my experience, been very good about being xbox 360 friendly in terms of connectivity.

Agreed. I had a Belkin, and that sucker would drop my XBL connection like it was a hot.

Also, the Linksys works quite well with the Nintendo DS and Wii Nintendo WiFi service.

Ok what about cat 5 cable. I want to buy bulk, and heard that home depot sells it for about 15c a foot, to me that seems dirt cheap. So its probally will be a bit more, but does anyone know some places that have great deals?.

I have made cables in the past. So Im pretty comfortable in this area. One question though will crossover cables work with the router, if so then ill have a good supply of system link cables :).

Sorry about that, didn't realize that my thoughts were not automatically conveyed to the forums lol.

Anyways I plan on buying the switch, I have a router, but I don't need internet. If the crossover cables do indeed work with the router then for a little more work, I can have a nice supply of system link cables :)

But with a switch you don't need to (and shouldn't) make crossover cables.

A crossover cable for system link only allows one console to connect directly to another (a "LAN" of two and no more than that). A switch (with standard Ethernet cables) will allow 16 consoles to connect and see each other.
Actually, Recon, it matters not whether he uses crossover or straight cables. The 360 has an auto-detecting ethernet port which will work with either.

So to sum, it's not necessary to have crossover cables (since I think it's more work to make them), but neither would it cause a problem.

You don't want to use crossover cables if you are going to be using a router/switch combination. The wires in the cables need to be the same on each end and for crossover cables usually the orange/orange white and green/green white are transposed from one end to the other. I don't think these will work unless you are directly connecting two devices together (such as two consoles). You will need to make plain old network cables to use with the router.

Ok what about capture cards, any recommendations, don't want to spend more than 50.

Want to do live recordings, if that makes a difference.

So far this one looks good.

Ps: looks like I'm up for a little bit longer :).

Sorry I wasn't talking about the 360, in one of his earlier posts he said that he was creating a small LAN, I just assumed it wasn't all made out of 360s and their kickass auto-sensing ports. :)
