Sorry for the whine but please...

Please someone tell me why! My melees stop short of hitting people, bounce off to the left or right, hit point blank and do no damage! I get killed in a straight shoot-off when I have plasma rifle/SMG combo... against an SMG. I can't even count the number of times I can stop and say with total confidence, after seeing someone kill or be killed, that if I did the exact same thing it wouldn't have worked.

I'm a good player, I used to be a level 32 in slayer. This type of thing is the only thing holding me back from advancing.

Is it a bad connection?
Never having host?
Is there some secret technique to playing Halo that I just never got the memo on?
I don't want to be annoying here, I'm just seriously at the end of my rope. Nothing ever seems to work for me like it should. Please offer any opinions, including "You just suck, lol." And once again, sorry for the kinda whiny post I don't mean to be a bother.

I have the same experience. Has been 28 in team slayer, but I frequently find myself in laggy games being killed in really bizarre situations where I had the upper hand. The feeling one get is like " I killed the bastard twice already, and he turn around and SMG me to death...". Many times I have been running behind the enemy pumping 3-4 shutgon blast point blank, and he doesn't die, instead turns around an break my spine like it was a twig....
This situation have gone up and down, but I must say that in recent months it has been really bad sometimes....

More likely he is just playing against people who are better than the ones you play against.

All of that which the OP mentions are general latency issues, which everyone has to deal with to some degree. If his connection drops a lot of packets he will notice these problems more. The only thing you can do is have the most stable connection possible and the rest is luck.

How can I figure out just how stable my connection is? I thought I had one of the best connections you could have... Comcast Cable Highspeed... So, how can I solve this? Honestly it happens to me 89.5% of the time.

Been banned 3 times for telling the truth on the forums. Just another way for Bungie to fail, hard.

haha.. level 32, level 29...ahhh, good times....i had a 49 and two 41s....but anyways, yeah i have def like lunged through people then they assassinate me, and i get pissed....the thing that annoys me the most is when i have a BR and someone else had SMG dualies, they kill me, but whenever i have SMG dualies and they have a BR, they kill me....and they dont quad, or double, or excessive shoot me, not even 4 shot....it pisses me off

I know. For us Europeans it's even worse, because most players are from the US, and so always get host. Wich sucks for us...

I'd Rather Be A Smartass Than A Dumbass

I find it fine most of the time sir.

Unless the game is already laggy in which case I suffer a little more then everybody else.

And do not underestimate the persistence of USA players sir.

Many are up long past 3-5 in the morning on Halo 2.

All of the above.

First, check your connection here. What's more important to you than upload/download is your Round Trip Time and Max Pause. Most cable broadband gives RTTs between 40 and 65ms, and as long as you're under 90ms you should be OK. Max Pause should be within that range, although if it's 125 to 150ms you'll still be "OK".

Also, is there any other equipment networked off your XBox -- like is someone else surfing/downloading at the same time? That will affect performance as well. Someone else posted something about NAT settings yesterday, not sure which thread it was.

And, as far as the "secret technique" goes, it's called button glitching. I run across it nearly every game these days. And yes, I, too was higher in rank before the reset. Many have complained about the same thing. It has to do with the rampant cheating and circle boosting going on recently. Players have multiple accounts, and get together with buddies who alternately de-rank and boost so they can be matched against lower-level players.

no wonder i cant get back up to lvl 31 in snipers if my connection is as bad as that site says sometimes, in the past 5 mins ive tested myself 3 times and gotten resuls ranging from a max pause of 190 ms to 1200 ms and round trip time of up to 280 ms. one result showed my queality of service was at 10% and another showed it at 93%, this must also be the reason how i perform from match to match varies quite alot too, is that right or am i taking this information wrongly

Your interpretation of the results as far as your H2 gameplay goes is right on the money. If you call your broadband service tech department, if you're lucky you may get someone who understands and can re-route your line. That may offer a small improvement. Otherwise, you may want to consider a contingent upgrade in service. If it's not what you need, then you can replace your old service with just a prorated monthly cost.

I was in the same boat, and just upgraded yesterday. Slightly better service quality, and an improvement in gameplay.

Edit:

I'm wondering if there might be an overall degradation in service quality from all providers as a result of increased broadband demand across the country. It seems like a lot of people are describing latency issues on this Forum.

Also, be advised if you test your line on a speedtest provided by your service provider, you're gong to get different results than those from InternetFrog. The reason for this is you have more or less a straight shot to your service provider's servers, whereas you have to do some server hops to get to sites like InternetFrog. IMHO, InternetFrog gives the best "real world" results.

DSL is broadband service offered over telephone lines. Generally speaking it's not as fast as cable broadband, although some DSL service providers in certain areas are superior. I think you're in Australia? Not sure what you have available out your way.

you are worthless to this conversation. where you are has nothing to do with it. i have had the exact same problem after the last update a few months ago, where i literally cant land a beat down. if im lucky, ill hit 2 for every 5 i miss or that dont register. ive lost countless games because i bxr someone, assasinate them, bxb them and it takes 3 hits, or shoot them with half a clip of duals and have a beat not register and they just turn around and kill me with a beat down like its nothing. it has nothing to do with player skill or connection(because it happens when im host as well). the last update just -blam!- some people up is all.

It's very possible that what you are experiencing (if not latency) are an increased number of opponents who are ALSO button glitching. Before, when most people were not, button glitches associated with melees equaled instant kills. Now, when you run across someone doing the same to you, it results in blocked attempts, and occasionally, their glitching cancels yours -- an advantage you used to enjoy against others.

Hah! Comcast! I have Comcast. It might have somehting to do with having an old router... Or being far away from the central hub. My dad lives at a lake in the middle of nowhere with Comcast, and whenever I play halo there, I lose connection... Oh, about every game or so. Try looking into getting your router updated.

Estne volumen in toga an solum tibi libet me videre?

Nothing suits me like a suit.

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.

I've had that happen to.

I hate games where you get like, 2 kills, 20 assists and 20 deaths.

I was 25, now im 17

Ya I have something like that to, whenever I take a sniper and they're crouched but I still have a perfect headshot, I shoot and it does nothing and I end up wasting like 1-2 clips ammo

i was thinking about posting a thread about this, i get the same problem most games,i live in England and have a crap connection, cos i live in the countryside. i often beat people down go straight through them etc. occasionally snipe in the head and nothing happens, i no its not cos im bad because in some games, me and my friends all from the UK win easily and the upload seems to be alot faster. We need dedicated servers!

while dedicated servers stop a single person from having host advantage it also means that there would be a host machine in america, and everyone with a low latency that lived in america would have an advantage over everyone who lived anywhere else that had a higher latency, and people who live in other countries playing with their friends who live a town away will get a bad connection because the game is being hosted in a different country. anyway i live in the countryside in england too and get hosted on all the time in halo 2 but cant do anything about it except get owned, there is 1 month till halo 3 and in that i saw absolutely no difference between who was host and who wasnt, i couldnt even spot who host was when i could in the first 10 secs of halo 2. so why get a load of dedicated servers for just a little less than a month. am i right?

in australia we got

DSL to about 75% of the country
Cable to about 40%
Wireless 98%
satalite 99%
dial-up 95%

I would really like to know if wireless is usable for XBL.

also, the main reason for latency is trans continental host's. I once had a host who was in australia and my latency bar was GREEN!!! and thats on dial-up internet :O but every time the host is in america its yellow or more often red

Only way to know for certain is to call their tech support and ask if they can give you typical latency numbers, or, find someone who has wireless and check the connection to InternetFrog. I think I read somewhere that the distance first up to satellite, down to ground, then back up to satellite on the return and back to ground added up to a poor number -- even at the speed of light. Probably wouldn't work well for Halo where every millisecond counts.

I've had connections in the yellow and red too -- although I'm sure you experience it more often than I do.
