Subject: Halo 2 Widescreen on 360?

Heya fellas. I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum or if this has been asked already, BUT, I just bought a widescreen TV, and was wondering if Halo 2 automatically goes into Widescreen mode with how I set my 360 in the dashboard. Does it do it automatically or is there an option somewhere I have to change. Because when I play it really doesn't seem to be in widescreen, but I have the 360 set to it.

Alright never mind I figured it out. But I have another issue. There seems to be a little lag between when i press buttons (or whatever) on my controller and when what I'm trying to do actually happens on screen. Is there any way to cut down that lag? I'm using an LCD HDTV (if that has anything to do with it)

FISH OR CUT BAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the TV settings see if you have what is called GAME MODE , if so switch it on. I got that on my TV and dont see any lag.

uhhhhh there shouldnt be any lag... have you tried single player.... did u get ur TV from the dollar store? LOL... maybe is has high MilliSecond response time....

Thanks for the response guys, and forgive if my issue is mundane lol. I'm probably just not used to the wider screen and how it affects turning/etc. I'll get used to it eventually. Thanks again!

Never eat yellow snow, unless of course, you spilled your Mt. Dew!

Yeah it definitely takes some adjusting. Took a while for me to get used to the timing especially when sniping. Following the enemy and timing the shot was tricky but got used to it.

After about an hour of playing Halo 2 online I've realized there actually is lag, and i'm not just imagining it. Not an absurd amount, like I press my thumbstick to the left and it takes 2 seconds to respond, but definitely enough lag to interfere with responding in real time to things happening in the game. Upon further investigation (A.K.A. Google search: HDTV Game Lag), I found a guide that showcases some FAIRLY expensive solutions in the form of external pieces of hardware, and $1500-2000 for a box that'll cut down my gaming lag? No thank you. I be one depressed lemur atm.

The 'screen lag' comes from the TV's internal signal processing, I think. It seems to be mainly a problem with DLP and some older plasmas. What resolution is your TV and what resolution is your 360 set to?

I don't know if this will work... but if you use a VGA cable on your 360, your 360 can scale the picture to the same resolution as your TV. That should mean your TV doesn't have to scale the picture itself, and might just bypass whatever process is delaying the picture. This is just speculation though.

My tv's highest resolution is 1080i, which is what I had my 360 on and it gave me the lag. I have it set to 480p (i think. whatever the setting between the highest and 1080i is on the 360 is what it's on) and it "seems" to have cut down a slight bit (i'm probably imagining it). I'm using the AV cables that came with the system though. If i get the VGA one it'll cut down on the lag? Because if so that'd be great, I'd pick one up tomorrow (today, whatever).

Sorry, what I meant was what is the number of pixels your telly has (1366x768 maybe?), rather than the highest resolution setting you can use on it.

I can't guarantee you it will work, it's just the most logical suggestion... but on the plus side most people prefer the picture they get with the VGA cable anyway, so it should be a win-win situation.

Um.... no clue how many pixels.. I could've sworn I saw somewhere on the box that said... but I can't seem to find it again. It's 26" if that helps (lol).

By the way, SWAT hates me now, thanks to the lag. No more leading the team to victory for me. : / (is wristing)

You'll need to find that out mate if you want to use the VGA . When you use it, in your console's display settings the list of HDTV resolutions (720p, 1080i etc) is replaced with PC-style resolution settings, like 1360x768. You will want to use one that closely matches what your TV has - if that isn't possible then the whole venture is a little pointless! You could just look up the model on the internet and it should be in the blurb on any site which sells it.

# Video formats: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i
# Display resolution: 1366 x 768
is what the site says about by tv.

It also says: # Response Time: 8ms
(is that useful at all?)

Bingo. When you use a VGA cable, be sure to select '1360x768' in the dashboard. That means that the 360 is pumping out (nearly) the exact number of pixels as there are on your TV screen, hopefully meaning the TV won't have to do any scaling - which is the process normally responsible for this 'screen lag' I believe.

Incidentally, when youare using the component cable that came with the 360, you'd probably be better off using 720p over 1080i. Just because it's higher doesn't necessarily mean better! Your TV has 768 lines, for which 720p is a much closer fit, and 'p' is better than 'i'.

I have it set to 720p atm, but it still has a bit of the lag. I guess I'll just suck it up... it's terrible though, failing to pull of stuff in games that you know you should be able to just because of a little lag.
Will the 1360x768 option replace the 720p/1080i/etc. selections simply by plugging the VGA cable in? Because I don't see anything like that in front of me now.

I'm off to bed. Thanks so much for your help, I'll try to pick up a VGA cable tomorrow. Cya.
