I missed a BR kill because after getting 2 headshots on my opponent, I tried to shoot some fusion cores next to him. BUT! The auto-aim was so great that I was not able to bring my crosshair over the fusion cores. Then he killed me.

I cannot wait until Halo 3.

Halo 3 still has lots of auto aim, or aim assist. It was a very easy transition from halo 2 to the halo 3 Beta.

Well, it's better than no auto aim (aim assist) really.

Sometimes I feel it's really high, other times I'm glad it's there. But there are plenty of times you're BR'ing someone and another enemy walks across the battlefield and drags your reticle which may cause you to die.

At least that doesn't happen in Halo 3, it's toned down a bit, but it's there. I think Halo 3's aim assist is just perfect .You don't get stuff like reticles dragging, but it doesn't make killing too difficult, so everyone has fun.

I agree completely with iceman. I know it has to be there to make up for latency and to make it an enjoyable game for everyone. I was simply stating that it is a smooth transition from h2 to h3 (the beta at least). But go back to h2 after almost a month of h3 and you will notice the difference. Maybe I just played the beta too much (who didn't ?) and didn't notice the learning curve because the time flew by really fast. Either way I am happy with the aim assist in all of the halo games (their all fun, yet different).

Yeah, I do really hate it when your reticle gets pulled off target by another player.

Please don't shoot the newb for this question.
I am sure I am just missing something because I just started playing Halo 2 (can't believe I have missed all this fun the past couple of years) but I do not see my reticle move. Is autoaim a setting or just a feature in Halo 2?

I find myself unloading a full clip at times (even with shorter bursts) while the NME uses 1/4 of the bullets and takes me down. I realize I suck at the game because I am new, but maybe I am not aiming or doing something right. Any ideas?

I do notice my reticle will change red or green from far away from a vehicle, but never noticed it when I put it on a person. I will have to look tonight to see what happens.

If you pay attention the reticule will slow down when you drag it at full speed across a persons head. It also will give you a headshot even if your reticule is slightly off of their head in any direction. This will actually cause the bullets to curve towards their face since you may not even be aiming at it. If an enemy walks by you, the magnitism is such that it will actually be pulled towards the enemy (granted you aren't staring at the ground, but just looking ahead of you). The reason for this is to make up for lag and latency issues, which are there even if they aren't noticeable. They are also there because of the fast pace of the game. It would be quite difficult killing a person without the auto aim. It is like no-scoping all the time, or trying to kill a teammate with accurate headshots. Anyway, sorry for the lengthy post. I'm no expert, but I hope you understand halo 2's auto aim, why it is there, and what it would be like without it.

It's not auto aim in the same way that, say, Grand Theft Auto has it. It's not like a lock on or anything. A better way to describe it would be aim assistance. It takes two forms in the game - one is that your reticle is slightly 'magnetized' with respect to enemies. If you look straight ahead and have another (enemy) player move back and forth across it, you will actually turn very slightly.

Absolutely not. The game is built with the controller in mind and with it comes the aim assist to help you aim with tiny little thumbsticks. It'll always dictate where you'll aim even if your intent is altogether something else like blowing up nearby fusion cores. If a player walks close enough into your crosshair it'll stick and drag your aim very slightly towards him and there's nothing you can do about it. Without this assist it's ridiculously hard to lay your crosshair upon a moving player steadily because of the inherent lack of accuracy in thumbsticks. Try killing moving teammates (because friendlies have no aim assist) with a BR and you'll realize how hard it is to aim without it.

Yep, I've always thought there was something odd about the concept of auto-aim helping to combat the effects of latency. Considering that the aim-assist functions on your xbox, how can it make up for a discrepancy which it does not know about? Aim-assist surely can't help you in hitting something that isn't quite there.

Thanks guys, I understand now. I never really noticed it before (not sure if that is good or bad) or whether I should try changing my style now knowing that it exists.

I've had plenty of occasions where I try to throw a grenade, but my reticle moves because of the assist, and lands far from where I wanted. Or when I throw a sticky and I somehow end up aiming for my team mate who's walked near me with an enemy on the other side.

sadly auto aim worked in halo 2 for some time but it broke now with halo 3 it well be like halo ce no auto aim and i think i saw some guy say there was auto aim in the beta well you are crazy i think one of the reasons i was some much better in the beta was that lack of auto aim

autoaim isn't really necessary. Its more of a curse than anything else. counter-strike doesnt have autoaim and look at how good that game is online. Its not needed.

Yes but with a game like Halo 2 it's needed.

First off, it's played on a console, so it involves thumbsticks for aiming. It's really hard to kill someone without aim assist but you can try it- attempt to four shot someone on your team when he's jumping and strafing and you'll see what I'm talking about. You'll probably need an entire clip to do such a thing.

Bungie made this game so casual players can have fun. But even the good players would suffer without aim assist, so the casual players would have a horrid time. Part of what makes a game fun is the ability to kill people effective. If it's too difficult, you're only going to have a tight niche group of players dedicating even more time to getting good.

Second, there's lag/latency. You have to factor that this game is played online and there's a lot of times where you get into laggy battle. Aim assist is there so that even in lag you have a fighting chance.

Lets just say this- it's better that aim assist is there as opposed to not being there.

I disagree. The reason that its hard is because the aim assist is there. If it had never been there from the begining then people would have been used to playing without it and it would be alot easier to team kill..........maybe we do need it.

I'm a little confused as to what you're getting at .......

What's easier? Killing someone on the other team, or a teammate? It's the person on the other team because you have the aim assist. If you try to kill someone on your team you'll see how much harder it is because there's no aim assist. If you've never tried it, try it and you'll see why we have aim assist.

It's designed to make the game easier and more accessible. Granted, a lot of people feel the aim assist for Halo 2 was pretty high (which it is) but that has been fixed for Halo 3. But not by taking it out, but rather toning it down to a more enjoyable level (good people will be good because they can aim but casual players can still get kills as well.)

Aim assist is necessary for a game like Halo 2. Heck, it's not like everyone can four shot all the time, there are plenty of times when I completely miss shots. So the aim assist doesn't mean we get automatic kills- it just means we can kill people without too much frustration.

Auto aim is built into first person shooters. If halo 2 didn't have auto aim using any weapon would be like no scoping with a sniper.
