it depends on where you live really, bacause i live in england and an out of the way place in england, host in halo 2 is really bad for me, im ussually loosing to host advantage alot, i know when im loosing because of host or not so dont tell me im just bad. lunging in halo 2 is bad for me when against someone else, i am like 100-200ms behind everyone else. due to this delay i dont know when exactly an enemy is in lunge range, if they are in lunge range on host and not to me i see them lunge from farther away, but because to my console they are out of range i cant lunge at them.
if i do lunge at them theyre usually in range already and already hit me. and when im behind someone trying to assassinate someone i see them in my range so i try to lunge at them and my console registers the lunge, but host sees the enemy outside my lunge range and tells my console i didnt lunge, i hit them and hear the crack but it doesnt count. this happens alot when me and my friend are playing against each other and each time he thinks im cheating, lol.
i dont know about the host advantage in gears of war but i have played it online and dont know how to tell someone who has host or what advantages it gives.
