Never before in a game have I not been afraid of the next enemy because of my health or ammo, but because I might physically soil myself.

Indeed. Doom 3 is at it's absolute best the first time you play it.

It's not something that really holds your interest for multiple replays, though. Savor it.

I've only got the demo. I'm a complete coward, so I'm still contemplating whether or not to buy it.

Heretic! you played a game of non bungie origins... but seriously Doom 3 is pretty lame actually. the idea to switch from light to weapon is really bad. why cant' he just hold his pistol and flashligt as any normal cop do?

Just get yourself a box of Depends along with the game, and you'll be ready to go!

They made it so you had to switch from your flashlight to your weapon to make you piss your pants even more. By the time you've spotted them with the flashlight and got you weapon out their already eating your face out.

I'm actually going slow enough to be able to pull my pistol out and shoot them a bunch of times in the head. But on multiple occasions I've walked right past an enemy, only to have them start eating me from behind.

Have you ever held a pistol & flashlight together for any length of time (more than 10-15 minutes) when you are actually intending to shoot at something? It is a major pita to do for even ten minutes in my opinion. I hate night shoots, and I'm only hitting stationary targets at various distances twice a year to maintain quals.

Then again, we're forced to hold our flashlights w/ our non-firing hand fully extended up & away from the body. Maybe the police train with a more comfortable stance, but my military training for night shooting is awkward when held for anything other than a few minutes.

I do fondly remember the first time I ran through the Doom series. Great for its time, and still worth a nostalgic run-through once in a while.

Take care,
Cavmn

I loved Doom 3. I played it at my friend's house nad used that flashlight like my life depended on it. He's the type of gamer who doesn't really care and runs through, shotgun blasting-- but watching me play the way I did.. creeping aroudn corners and cheaking the whole room so nothing will jump out at me, made him edgy too.

It was great and I can't wait for it to come out on Xbox.

Meh. I got bored partway through Hell. 95% of the monsters in the game practically flag you down to let you know they're coming, and when they don't give themselves away via THE ONLY LIGHT IN THE HALLWAY, they're in some obvious nook or cranny and all you need to do is throw a grenade or two.

However, level design was absolutely gorgeous (though level flow was a little uninteresting). Were it not for the plastic feeling given off by the loose speculars, it'd have been perfect.

Doom 3 is scary but dreadfully boring.

Half-Life 2 is semi-scary but really fun.

Halo 2 owns both of them.

I can hardly put this game down because it's so scary. Combat is significantly more boring than, say, H2, but I really want to know what's going to happen next. Well, one way to find out.

These sights aren't helping.

Just keep telling yourself, "Those are only barbeque ribs, they're only barbeque ribs..." over and over again and you just might maintain your sanity(as well as maintain your apetite).

Funny thing is, that's actually good advice.

Doom 3 was a tech demo. Lots of pretty lighting, but the gameplay was simple and it was _way_ to easy (I was playing on Veteran) and repetitive. Not too scary, either. The 1000th Imp popping out to get hit by one of my 200 shotgun shells is... well, it's pretty and boring. Personally, I don't think it was worth the money, but hey, I had to, it's Doom, even if it doesn't play like it.

So, did it take all that long for you guys to get bored of it? How far into the game is hell? I've heard that the modding community has done some great things, and a friend of mine actively plays multiplayer.

Edit: There's not much I can do to keep playing this game.

You can't tell from the screenshot, but it was a fairly gruesome scene. I have to be in a certain kind of mood to be able to play this game without being scared out of my mind. Damn my cowardice.

I got bored pretty quickly. The monsters don't scare me in the slightest, and like I said before, the parts that are supposed to make you jump are painfully predictable.

However, that's not to say the game doesn't have its moments. Personally, the creepiest parts of the game are the parts that don't involve monster attacks. For example at some point you enter a hallway, and the sound of a woman screaming blows past you, and as the sound travels it is followed by archaic runes lighting up along the walls, floor and ceiling.

The best, absolute best moment in the game, though, is when you go to walk past an elevator, just as you're about to pass it, you hear a little girl whisper "Over here!" And then the elevator opens up slowly, revealing an empty elevator shaft. However, they ruin it. When you approach the shaft, an Imp teleports in behind you. Scary? Not really, you have enough time to not just turn around, but to position yourself behind the imp, arm your shotgun, and blow him away before he can even turn to look at you.

I agree with the "Doom 3 is a tech demo" comment. Id no longer relies on games for money, they rely on their game engine's. And frankly their own sense of game design has suffered from it.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

Gee Shiska... thanks for revealing the "Absolute Best" part of the game for us!

Heh. Just kidding. I'm not going to go buy it. But still, that wan't nice.

I'm gonna have to add my own

*SPOILER*

The creepiest part for me was in... I think it was Alpha Labs 2, or maybe 3, when you're going through the pitch black area with the scientist who has the lantern.

*WORSE SPOILER*

The part where you hear someone say "over here" and you go around the corner and the screen turns red and distorted and you can't move and it says "THEY TOOK MY BABY!" then when you're walking out you hear a baby crying. That's probably the only part that freaked me out.

I agree with you for the most part. Monster attacks don't really freak me out, especially not imps. The most frightening thing about the game so far is killing a zombie, then finding the PDA of the guy that zombie used to be. Those voice messages disturb me.

Thanks for your input everyone. I've decided to get it if I can't find anything else in particular I'd like to buy. I'll have 300 dollars this Christmas, and I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with it. Oh well, at least I'm lucky enough to attain that kind of money. It's going to be the most money I've ever had in my possession that isn't for college/car/etc.
